The fast, as taught by holy lore,
We keep in solemn course once more:
The fast to all men known, and bound
In forty days of yearly round.
The law and seers that were of old
In diverse ways this Lent foretold,
Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide,
In after ages sanctified.
More sparing therefore let us make
The words we speak, the food we take,
Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred
Be every sense in holy guard.
Avoid the evil thoughts that roll
Like waters o’er the heedless soul;
Nor let the foe occasion find
Our souls in slavery to bind.
In prayer together let us fall,
And cry for mercy, one and all,
And weep before the Judge’s feet,
And his avenging wrath entreat.
Thy grace have we offended sore,
By sins, O God, which we deplore;
But pour upon us from on high,
O pardoning One, thy clemency.
Remember thou, though frail we be,
That yet thine handiwork are we;

With the people of the Jews condemned, the mystery of the Church is clearly expressed: she who, in the Ninevites through penance, and in the queen of the South through the desire to receive wisdom, is gathered from the ends of the whole world, so that she may come to know the words of the peaceful Solomon. She is truly a queen whose kingdom is undivided, rising from diverse and distant peoples into one body.

And so that great sacrament concerns Christ and the Church. Yet this latter is the greater, because the former came before it as a figure, whereas now it is the mystery in its fullness and in truth. For there, Solomon is a type; here, however, it is Christ in his own body. The Church, therefore, is constituted of two kinds: those who know not how to sin, and those who cease to sin. For repentance abolishes transgression, and wisdom guards against it.

Moreover, the sign of Jonah is, as a type of the Lord's Passion, so also a testimony of the grievous sins that the Jews committed. At the same time one may observe both an oracle of majesty and a sign of mercy. For by the example of the Ninevites, punishment is proclaimed and a remedy is shown. Hence the Jews too should not despair of pardon, if they are willing to do penance.
