Hymnus

Ætérna Christi múnera,
Apostolórum glóriam,
Palmas et hymnos débitos
Lætis canámus méntibus.

Ecclesiárum Príncipes,
Belli triumpháles duces,
Cæléstis aulæ mílites,
Et vera mundi lúmina.

Devóta Sanctórum fides,
Invícta spes credéntium,
Perfécta Christi cáritas
Mundi tyránnum cónterit.

In his Patérna glória,
In his triúmphat Fílius,
In his volúntas Spíritus,
Cælum replétur gáudio.

Patri, simúlque Fílio,
Tibíque Sancte Spíritus,
Sicut fuit, sit iúgiter
Sæclum per omne glória.
Amen.

Th' eternal gifts of Christ the King,
The Apostles' glory, let us sing;
And all with hearts of gladness raise
Due hymns of thankful love and praise.

For they the Church's princes are,
Triumphant leaders in the war,
The heavenly King's own warrior band,
True lights to lighten every land.

Theirs was the steadfast faith of saints,
The hope that never yields nor faints,
The love of Christ in perfect glow,
That lay the prince of this world low.

In them the Father's glory shone,
In them the Spirit's will was done,
The Son himself exults in them;
Joy fills the new Jerusalem.

Praise to the Father, with the Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One;
As ever was in ages past,
And so shall be while ages last.
Amen.

33:12 Come forward, sons. Listen to me: * I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
33:13 Which is the man who wills life, * who chooses to see good days?
33:14 Prohibit your tongue from evil: * and your lips from speaking deceit.
33:15 Turn away from evil, and do good: * inquire about peace, and pursue it.
33:16 The eyes of the Lord are on the just: * and his ears are with their prayers.
33:17 But the countenance of the Lord is upon those who do evil: * to perish the remembrance of them from the earth.
33:18 The just cried out, and the Lord heard them: * and he freed them from all their tribulations.
33:19 The Lord is near to those who are troubled in heart: * and he will save the humble in spirit.
33:20 Many are the afflictions of the just: * and from them all the Lord will free them.
33:21 The Lord preserves all of their bones: * not one of them shall be broken.
33:22 The death of a sinner is very harmful: * and those who hate the just will fare badly.
33:23 The Lord will redeem the souls of his servants: * and none of those who hope in him will fare badly.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:

Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:

And lead us not into temptation:

Sed líbera nos a malo.

But deliver us from evil.

Absolutio.

From the Acts of the Apostles

Acts 1:15-18

Acts 1:15-18

15 In those days, Peter, rising up in the midst of the brothers, said (now the crowd of men altogether was about one hundred and twenty):
16 "Noble brothers, the Scripture must be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit predicted by the mouth of David about Judas, who was the leader of those who apprehended Jesus.
17 He had been numbered among us, and he was chosen by lot for this ministry.
18 And this man certainly possessed an estate from the wages of iniquity, and so, having been hanged, he burst open in the middle and all his internal organs poured out."

Emendémus in mélius, quæ ignoránter peccávimus: ne súbito præoccupáti die mortis, quærámus spátium pœniténtiæ, et inveníre non possímus:

Let us amend for the better what we have sinned through ignorance; lest, suddenly overtaken by the day of death, we seek a space for repentance and are unable to find it:

Atténde, Dómine, et miserére, quia peccávimus tibi.

Attend, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against you.

Adiuva nos, Deus salutáris noster, et propter honórem nóminis tui, Dómine, líbera nos.

Help us, O God of our salvation, and for the honor of your name, O Lord, deliver us.

Atténde, Dómine, et miserére, quia peccávimus tibi.

Attend, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against you.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur.

Benedictio. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

Acts 1:19-22

Acts 1:19-22

19 And this became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that this field was called in their language, Akeldama, that is, 'Field of Blood.'
20 For it has been written in the book of Psalms: 'Let their dwelling place be desolate and may there be no one who dwells within it,' and 'Let another take his episcopate.'
21 Therefore, it is necessary that, out of these men who have been assembling with us throughout the entire time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22 beginning from the baptism of John, until the day when he was taken up from us, one of these be made a witness with us of his Resurrection.

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unjust man his thoughts, and let him return to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him:

For the Lord our God is good and merciful, and ready to forgive evil.

The Lord does not desire the death of the sinner, but that he be converted and live.

For the Lord our God is good and merciful, and ready to forgive evil.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad gáudia paradísi perdúcat nos misericórdia Christi.

Benedictio. May the mercy of Christ lead us to the joys of paradise.

Acts 1:23-26

Acts 1:23-26

23 And they appointed two: Joseph, who was called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
24 And praying, they said: 'May you, O Lord, who knows the heart of everyone, reveal which one of these two you have chosen,
25 to take a place in this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas prevaricated, so that he might go to his own place.'
26 And they cast lots concerning them, and the lot fell upon Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven Apostles.

Paradísi portas apéruit nobis ieiúnii tempus: suscipiámus illud orántes, et deprecántes:

The season of fasting has opened for us the gates of Paradise; let us take it up with prayer and supplication,

Ut in die resurrectiónis cum Dómino gloriémur.

That we may glory with the Lord on the day of the Resurrection.

In ómnibus exhibeámus nosmetípsos sicut Dei minístros in multa patiéntia.

In all things let us show ourselves as ministers of God, in much patience.

Ut in die resurrectiónis cum Dómino gloriémur.

That we may glory with the Lord on the day of the Resurrection.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

60:2 Exáudi, Deus, deprecatiónem meam: * inténde oratióni meæ.
60:3 A fínibus terræ ad te clamávi: * dum anxiarétur cor meum, in petra exaltásti me.

60:2 O God, pay attention to my supplication: * be attentive to my prayer.
60:3 I cried out to you from the ends of the earth: * when my heart was in anguish, you exalted me on a rock.
60:4 You have led me, for you have been my hope: * a tower of strength before the face of the enemy.
60:5 I will dwell in your tabernacle forever: * I will be protected under the cover of your wings.
60:6 For you, my God, have listened to my prayer: * you have granted an inheritance to those who fear your name.
60:7 You will add days to the days of the king: * his years, even to the time of generation after generation.

Psalmus 63

Psalm 63

63:2 Exáudi, Deus, oratiónem meam cum déprecor: * a timóre inimíci éripe ánimam meam.
63:3 Protexísti me a convéntu malignántium: * a multitúdine operántium iniquitátem.

63:2 Hear, O God, my prayer of supplication: * rescue my soul from the fear of the enemy.
63:3 You have protected me from the assembly of the malignant: * from a multitude of workers of iniquity.
63:4 For they have sharpened their tongues like a sword: * they have formed their bow into a bitter thing, so that they may shoot arrows from hiding at the immaculate.
63:6 They will suddenly shoot arrows at him, and they will not be afraid: * they are resolute in their wicked talk.
63:6 They have spoken so as to hide snares: * they said: Who will see them?
63:7 They have been searching carefully for iniquities: * their exhaustive search has failed.
63:7 Man will approach with a deep heart: * and God will be exalted.
63:8 The arrows of the little ones have become their wounds: * and their tongues have been weakened against them.
63:9 All those who saw them have been troubled: * and every man was afraid.
63:10 And they announced the works of God, * and they understood his acts.
63:11 The just will rejoice in the Lord, and they will hope in him, * and all the upright of heart will be praised.

Amen.

Constítues eos príncipes super omnem terram.

You shall make them princes over all the earth.

De Expositióne sancti Augustíni Epíscopi super psalmum octogésimum sextum

From the Commentary of Saint Augustine, Bishop, on Psalm Eighty-Six

His foundations are in the holy mountains; the Lord loves the gates of Zion. Why are the Apostles and Prophets foundations? Because their authority bears up our weakness. Why are they gates? Because through them we enter into the Kingdom of God. For they preach to us, and when we enter through them, we enter through Christ, for he himself is the door. And when twelve gates of Jerusalem are spoken of, and Christ is both the one gate and the twelve gates, this is because Christ is in the twelve gates; and hence the twelvefold number of the Apostles. The significance of this twelvefold number is a great mystery. 'You shall sit,' he says, 'upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.'

Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.

Benedictio. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

If there are twelve thrones there, there is no place for a thirteenth — for Paul the Apostle — to sit, and there will be no way for him to judge; yet he himself said he would judge, not men only but also angels. What angels, if not apostate angels? Do you not know, he says, that we shall judge angels? Let the crowd therefore reply: Why do you boast that you will judge? Where will you sit? The Lord assigned twelve thrones to twelve Apostles; one fell — Judas — and in his place holy Matthias was ordained; the number of twelve thrones was completed. First find a place where you may sit; and then threaten that you will judge. What the twelve thrones mean, let us see. It is the Sacrament of a certain totality; because the Church was to exist throughout the whole world, whence this structure is called to the framework of Christ.

Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.

Benedictio. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

Istæ quátuor partes assídue nominántur in Scriptúris. Ab istis quátuor ventis, sicut dicit Dóminus in Evangélio, a quátuor ventis se collectúrum eléctos suos; ab ómnibus ergo istis quátuor ventis vocátur Ecclésia. Quómodo vocátur? Undique in Trinitáte vocátur.

And therefore, because judgment comes from every direction, there are twelve thrones; just as, because that city is entered from every direction, there are twelve gates. Therefore not only those twelve and the Apostle Paul, but all who are to judge, belong, for the significance of universality, to the twelve thrones; just as all who are to enter belong to the twelve gates. For there are four parts of the world: East, West, North, and South. These four parts are continually named in the Scriptures. From these four winds, as the Lord says in the Gospel, he will gather his elect from the four winds; from all these four winds, therefore, the Church is called. How is she called? She is called from every side in the Trinity. She is not called except through baptism in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Four multiplied by three therefore yields twelve.

Amen.

74:6 Nolíte extóllere in altum cornu vestrum: * nolíte loqui advérsus Deum iniquitátem.

74:3 We will declare your wonders: * when I have received the time, I will judge justices.
74:4 The earth has been dissolved, with all who dwell in it: * I have confirmed its pillars.
74:5 I said to the iniquitous: Do not act unjustly: * and to the offenders: Do not exalt the horn:
74:6 Do not exalt your horn on high: * do not speak iniquity against God.
74:7 For it is neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the desert mountains: * for God is judge.
74:8 This one he humbles, and that one he exalts: * for in the hand of the Lord there is a cup of undiluted wine, full of consternation.
74:9 And he poured from this one into that one: yet its dregs have not been emptied out: * all the sinners of the earth shall drink.
74:10 But I will announce it in every age: * I will sing to the God of Jacob.
74:11 And I will break all the horns of sinners: * and the horns of the just will be exalted.

Come to me, all you who labor. For why do we all labor, unless it be that we are mortal men, fragile, infirm, carrying earthen vessels that press upon one another? But if the vessels of flesh are pressed, let the spaces of charity be enlarged. What then does he say—Come to me, all you who labor—if not that you may no longer labor? Moreover his promise is at hand; for since he has called those who labor, they will perhaps ask with what reward they are called. And I, he says, will refresh you. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me—not to fashion the world, not to create all things visible and invisible, not to work wonders in the world itself and raise the dead; but, Because I am meek and humble of heart.

Rend your hearts, and not your garments: and turn to the Lord your God:

Quia benígnus et miséricors est.

For he is gracious and merciful.

Let the wicked man forsake his way, and the unjust man his thoughts, and let him return to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him.

Quia benígnus et miséricors est.

For he is gracious and merciful.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

Benedictio. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

Do you wish to be great? Begin from the least. Are you thinking of building the great structure of loftiness? Think first of the foundation of humility. And however great a mass of building each one wishes and plans to pile upon it, the greater the building is to be, the deeper he digs the foundation. And indeed a building in the course of construction rises upward; but the one digging the foundation is pressed down to the depths. Therefore a building is humbled before its loftiness, and the height is raised up after the humiliation.

Frange esuriénti panem tuum, et egénos vagósque induc in domum tuam:

Break your bread for the hungry, and bring the needy and the wandering into your house:

Tunc erúmpet quasi mane lumen tuum, et anteíbit fáciem tuam iustítia tua.

Then your light shall break forth like the morning, and your justice shall go before your face.

When you see the naked, cover him, and do not despise your own flesh.

Tunc erúmpet quasi mane lumen tuum, et anteíbit fáciem tuam iustítia tua.

Then your light shall break forth like the morning, and your justice shall go before your face.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

What is the summit of the building we are endeavoring to construct? To what height will the pinnacle of the edifice reach? I will say it quickly: to the sight of God. You see how lofty it is, what a great thing it is to behold God. He who desires it understands both what I say and what he hears. To us is promised the sight of God, of the true God, of the supreme God. For this is the good: for the one who sees, to see. For those who worship false gods can easily see them; but they see those who have eyes and do not see. But to us is promised the vision of the living and seeing God.

God has given his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways:

They shall bear you in their hands, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone.

Super áspidem et basilíscum ambulábis, et conculcábis leónem et dracónem.

You shall walk upon the asp and the basilisk, and you shall trample underfoot the lion and the dragon.

They shall bear you in their hands, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone.

Amen.

They shall bear you in their hands, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone.
