1 Recordátus autem Deus Noë, cunctorúmque animántium, et ómnium iumentórum, quæ erant cum eo in arca, addúxit spíritum super terram, et imminútæ sunt aquæ.
2 Et clausi sunt fontes abýssi, et cataráctæ cæli: et prohíbitæ sunt plúviæ de cælo.
3 Reversǽque sunt aquæ de terra eúntes et redeúntes: et cœpérunt mínui post centum quinquagínta dies.
4 Requievítque arca mense séptimo, vigésimo séptimo die mensis, super montes Arméniæ.

1 Then God remembered Noah, and all living things, and all the cattle which were with him in the ark, and he brought a wind across the earth, and the waters were diminished.
2 And the fountains of the abyss and the floodgates of heaven were closed. And the rain from heaven was restrained.
3 And the waters were restored to their coming and going from the earth. And they began to diminish after one hundred and fifty days.
4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, upon the mountains of Armenia.

℟ Ædificávit Noë altáre Dómino, ófferens super illud holocáustum: odoratúsque est Dóminus odórem suavitátis, et benedíxit ei, dicens:

℟ Noah built an altar to the Lord, and offered upon it a burnt offering: and the Lord smelled a sweet fragrance, and blessed him, saying:

6 Cumque transíssent quadragínta dies, apériens Noë fenéstram arcæ, quam fécerat, dimísit corvum,
7 qui egrediebátur, et non revertebátur, donec siccaréntur aquæ super terram.
8 Emísit quoque colúmbam post eum, ut vidéret si iam cessássent aquæ super fáciem terræ.
9 Quæ cum non invenísset ubi requiésceret pes eius, revérsa est ad eum in arcam.

5 Yet in truth, the waters were departing and decreasing until the tenth month. For in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tips of the mountains appeared.
6 And when forty days had passed, Noah, opening the window that he had made in the ark, sent forth a raven,
7 which went forth and did not return, until the waters were dried up across the earth.
8 Likewise, he sent forth a dove after him, in order to see if the waters had now ceased upon the face of the earth.
9 But when she did not find a place where her foot might rest, she returned to him in the ark. For the waters were upon the whole earth.

℟ Ponam arcum meum in núbibus cæli, dixit Dóminus ad Noë:

℟ I will set my bow in the clouds of heaven, said the Lord to Noah:

Et recordábor fœ́deris mei, quod pépigi tecum.

And I will be mindful of my covenant which I have made with you.

℣ And when I cover the sky with clouds, my bow shall appear in the clouds.

10 And then, having waited a further seven days, he again sent forth the dove out of the ark.
11 And she came to him in the evening, carrying in her mouth an olive branch with green leaves. Noah then understood that the waters had ceased upon the earth.
12 And nevertheless, he waited another seven days. And he sent forth the dove, which no longer returned to him.
13 Therefore, in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the waters were diminished upon the earth.

℟ Per memetípsum iurávi, dicit Dóminus, non adíciam ultra aquas dilúvii super terram: pacti mei recordábor,

℟ I have sworn by myself, says the Lord; I will add no more waters of a flood upon the earth; I will be mindful of my covenant,

So that I will not destroy all flesh with the waters of a flood.

On a certain day she came, as was her custom, and her venerable brother came down to her with his disciples; and they spent the whole day in the praises of God and sacred conversation; and when the darkness of night was already gathering, they took food together. And while they were still sitting at table, and the hour prolonged itself amid holy discourse, that consecrated woman, his sister, begged him, saying: I pray you, do not leave me tonight, that until morning we may speak of the joys of the heavenly life. But he replied: What are you saying, sister? On no account can I remain outside my cell. The sky at that time was so serene that not a single cloud appeared in the air. But that consecrated woman, when she heard the refusing words of her brother, placed her head on her hands and bowed down to pray to the almighty Lord. And when she raised her head from the table, so great a flash of lightning and crack of thunder broke forth, and so great a flood of rain poured down, that neither the venerable Benedict nor the brethren who were with him could move a foot outside the threshold of the place where they were sitting.

For the consecrated woman, lowering her head into her hands, had poured a river of tears upon the table, through which she drew the clear air to rain. Nor did that flood of rain follow long after her prayer; but the harmony between prayer and flood was such that even as she raised her head from the table with the thunder, one and the same moment was both the raising of her head and the descent of the rain. Then the man of God, amid lightning and thunder and the flooding of a mighty rain, seeing that he could not return to the monastery, began to complain in sorrow, saying: May almighty God pardon you, sister: what have you done? She answered him: Behold, I begged you and you were unwilling to hear me; I prayed to my God and he heard me. Now therefore, if you can, go out and, leaving me, return to the monastery. But he, unable to go out of doors, who had been unwilling to remain of his own choice, remained against his will. And so it came to pass that they spent the whole night in vigil, and through the sacred conversations of the spiritual life refreshed one another in mutual exchange.

Rejoicing at her so great glory, he returned thanks to almighty God in hymns and praises, and announced her death to the brothers. He also sent them immediately to bring her body to the monastery and to place it in the tomb which he himself had prepared. The reading of the holy Gospel which you have just heard, dearest brethren, needs no exposition, but admonition. For what Truth has expounded by its very own words, let not human frailty presume to discuss. Yet there is something in this very exposition of the Lord that we ought carefully to weigh: for if we were ourselves to tell you that the seed is the word, the field the world, the birds demons, and the thorns riches, your minds might perhaps hesitate to believe us. For this reason the Lord himself deigned to explain what he was saying, so that you might know how to seek the meaning of things even in those matters which he chose not to explain himself.

For who would ever have believed me, if I had wished to interpret thorns as riches? Especially since thorns wound while riches delight. And yet they are thorns, because by the pricks of their thoughts they lacerate the mind; and when they drag it down to sin, they, as it were, wound it and make it bleed. These are rightly called by the Lord in another Gospel, not riches, but deceitful riches.

Cibus enim mentis est sermo Dei: et quasi accéptus cibus stómacho languénte reiícitur, quando audítus sermo in ventre memóriæ non tenétur. Sed quisquis aliménta non rétinet, huius profécto vita desperátur.

For those things are deceptive which cannot remain with us for long; deceptive are those things which do not drive away the poverty of our mind. But the only true riches are those which make us rich in virtues. If therefore, dearest brothers, you desire to be rich, love true riches. If you seek the summit of true honor, press on toward the heavenly kingdom. If you love the glory of dignities, make haste to be enrolled in that celestial court of Angels. Hold in your mind the words of the Lord which you receive through your ears. For the word of God is the food of the mind; and just as food received is rejected by a languishing stomach, so a word that has been heard is not retained in the belly of memory. But whoever does not hold fast to his nourishment, his life is surely without hope.
