4 ipsa vero trigínta tribus diébus manébit in sánguine purificatiónis suæ. Omne sanctum non tanget, nec ingrediétur in Sanctuárium donec impleántur dies purificatiónis suæ.
5 Sin autem féminam pepérerit, immúnda erit duábus hebdomádibus iuxta ritum fluxus ménstrui, et sexagínta sex diébus manébit in sánguine purificatiónis suæ.

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: A woman, if she has received the seed to bear a male, shall be unclean for seven days, just as in the days of separation due to menstruation.
3 And on the eighth day, the little infant shall be circumcised.
4 Yet truly, she herself shall remain for thirty-three days in the blood of her purification. She shall not touch anything holy, nor shall she enter into the Sanctuary, until the days of her purification are completed.
5 But if she will bear a female, she shall be unclean for two weeks, according to the custom of her monthly flow, and she shall remain in the blood of her purification for sixty-six days.

℟ After the days of Mary's purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, they brought Jesus to Jerusalem, in order to present him to the Lord,

just as it is written in the law of the Lord: For every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord.

℣ They offered for him to the Lord a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

6 And when the days of her purification have been completed, for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the door of the tabernacle of the testimony, a one-year-old lamb as a holocaust, and a young pigeon or a turtledove for sin, and she shall deliver them to the priest, 7 who shall offer them in the sight of the Lord, and shall pray for her. And so she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for one who bears a male or a female. 8 And if her hand has not obtained or been able to offer a lamb, she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons: one as a holocaust, and the other for sin. And the priest shall pray for her, and so she shall be cleansed.

He accomplished, established, and wrote very many other things pertaining to the dignity and discipline of the Church. He condemned the defenders of Acacius, and especially Euphemius the Patriarch of Constantinople; and by his most vigorous and learned letters addressed to various parties, he either held them to their duty or recalled those who had gone astray. He restrained the Pelagians, Manicheans, and other heretics, and took care that their books were handed over to public burning. Besides decretals and ecclesiastical hymns, he wrote distinguished short works against Nestorius, Arius, Pelagius, and Eutyches. But most worthy of remembrance above all others is the fact that, by a singular decree of a Roman synod of seventy bishops, he distinguished the canonical books from others, and the approved from the apocryphal. After at last exhausting many labors in governing the universal Church, this most holy and most learned Pontiff died piously in the Lord on the eleventh before the Kalends of December, in the year of Christ four hundred and ninety-six, and was buried in the Vatican.

Adhuc in útero portabátur, et ex útero matris a Ioánne Baptísta salutabátur. In templo præsentabátur, et a Simeóne sene famóso, annóso, probáto, coronáto agnoscebátur. Thus was it foretold of old: the Mother of Sion says: Man and man was born in her, and the Most High himself has founded her. O omnipotence of one being born! O magnificence of one descending from heaven to earth! He was still carried in the womb, and yet from his mother's womb he was greeted by John the Baptist. He was presented in the temple, and acknowledged by Simeon — that aged, old, proven, crowned elder. Then he knew, then he adored, then he said: Now, O Lord, you dismiss your servant in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation.

℟ Simeon was just and God-fearing, and awaited the redemption of Israel,

He was delayed from departing from this world, so that he might see the one through whom the world was created. The old man recognized the Infant; he became a child in the presence of the Child. He was renewed in age, who had been full of devotion. Simeon, old in years, carried Christ the Infant; Christ governed the old age of Simeon. It had been told him by the Lord that he would not taste death until he had seen the Christ of the Lord born. Christ was born, and the desire of the old man was fulfilled in the very old age of the world itself. He himself came to the aged man, who found the world grown old.

Finally, so that you may know that his joy was indeed such, he concluded saying: Now you dismiss your servant in peace; for my eyes have seen your salvation. The Prophets sang that the Creator of heaven and earth would come to dwell on earth among men; the Angel announced that the Creator of flesh and spirit would come in the flesh; John greeted the Savior from the womb to the womb; the aged Simeon recognized God as an infant.

Et ecce homo erat in Ierúsalem, cui nomen Símeon, et homo iste iustus et timorátus, exspéctans consolatiónem Israël. Non solum ab Angelis, et prophétis, et a pastóribus, sed étiam a senióribus et iustis generátio Dómini accépit testimónium. Omnis ætas, et utérque sexus, eventorúmque mirácula fidem ástruunt. Virgo génerat, stérilis parit, mutus lóquitur, Elísabeth prophétat, Magus adórat, útero clausus exsúltat, vídua confitétur, iustus exspéctat.

And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and God-fearing, awaiting the consolation of Israel. Not only from angels and prophets and shepherds, but also from the elderly and the just did the generation of the Lord receive its witness. Every age and both sexes and the wonders of events build up the faith. A Virgin gives birth, a barren woman bears a child, a mute speaks, Elizabeth prophesies, a Magus adores, one enclosed in the womb leaps for joy, a widow gives thanks, and a just man awaits.

℟ Simeon, taking Jesus up into his arms, cried out and said:

Tu es vere lumen ad illuminatiónem géntium, et glóriam plebis tuæ Israël.

Et ipse accépit eum in ulnas suas, et benedíxit Deum, et dixit: Nunc dimítte servum tuum, Dómine, secúndum verbum tuum in pace. Vide iustum, velut corpóreæ cárcere molis inclúsum, velle dissólvi, ut incípiat esse cum Christo. Dissólvi enim, et cum Christo esse, multo mélius est.

And rightly so was the just man, who sought not his own glory but that of the people, himself desiring to be freed from the bonds of bodily frailty, yet waiting to see the promised One: for he knew that blessed were the eyes that would see him. And he himself received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said: Now dismiss your servant, Lord, according to your word in peace. See the just man, enclosed as in the prison of bodily burden, wishing to be dissolved, so that he might begin to be with Christ. For to be dissolved and to be with Christ is far better.

Ecce et Símeon prophétat, in ruínam et resurrectiónem plurimórum venísse Dóminum Iesum Christum, ut iustórum iniquorúmque mérita discérnat; et pro nostrórum qualitáte factórum, iudex verus et iustus aut supplícia decérnat aut prǽmia.

But one who wishes to be dismissed, let him come to the temple, let him come to Jerusalem, let him wait for the Christ of the Lord, let him receive the Word of God into his hands, let him embrace him in deeds as with certain arms of his faith: then he will be dismissed, so that he may not see death, who has seen Life. You see the abundant grace poured out upon all through the generation of the Lord, and the prophecy denied to unbelievers, not to the just. Behold, Simeon also prophesies that the Lord Jesus Christ came for the fall and the resurrection of many, that he might discern the merits of the just and the unjust; and according to the quality of our deeds, as a true and just judge, he decrees either punishments or rewards.

℟ Ubi est Abel frater tuus? dixit Dóminus ad Cain. Néscio, Dómine, numquid custos fratris mei sum ego? Et dixit ad eum: Quid fecísti?

℟ Where is your brother Abel? said the Lord to Cain. I do not know, O Lord, am I my brother's keeper? And he said to him: What have you done?

Ecce vox sánguinis fratris tui Abel clamat ad me de terra.

Behold, the voice of your brother Abel's blood cries out to me from the earth.
