18:6b He has exulted like a giant running along the way, * (7a) his departure is from the summit of heaven:

18:8 The law of the Lord is immaculate, converting souls: * the testimony of the Lord is faithful, providing wisdom to little ones.
18:9 The justice of the Lord is right, rejoicing hearts: * the precepts of the Lord are brilliant, enlightening the eyes.
18:10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for all generations: * the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
18:11 Desirable beyond gold and many precious stones: * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.
18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord: * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.
18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate: * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.
18:15a And the eloquence of my mouth will be so as to please: * along with the meditation of my heart in your sight always.

1 Quid ergo dicémus? permanébimus in peccáto ut grátia abúndet?
2 Absit. Qui enim mórtui sumus peccáto, quómodo adhuc vivémus in illo?
3 an ignorátis quia quicúmque baptizáti sumus in Christo Iesu, in morte ipsíus baptizáti sumus?
4 Consepúlti enim sumus cum illo per baptísmum in mortem: ut quómodo Christus surréxit a mórtuis per glóriam Patris, ita et nos in novitáte vitæ ambulémus.
5 Si enim complantáti facti sumus similitúdini mortis eius: simul et resurrectiónis érimus.

1 So what shall we say? Should we remain in sin, so that grace may abound?
2 Let it not be so! For how can we who have died to sin still live in sin?
3 Do you not know that those of us who have been baptized in Christ Jesus have been baptized into his death?
4 For through baptism we have been buried with him into death, so that, in the manner that Christ rose from the dead, by the glory of the Father, so may we also walk in the newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together, in the likeness of his death, so shall we also be, in the likeness of his resurrection.

6 For we know this: that our former selves have been crucified together with him, so that the body which is of sin may be destroyed, and moreover, so that we may no longer serve sin.
7 For he who has died has been justified from sin.
8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live together with Christ,
9 for we know that Christ, in rising up from the dead, can no longer die: death no longer has dominion over him.
10 For in as much as he died for sin, he died once. But in as much as he lives, he lives for God.
11 And so, you should consider yourselves to be certainly dead to sin, and to be living for God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

℟ Confirmátum est cor Vírginis, in quo divína mystéria, Angelo nuntiánte, concépit: tunc speciósum forma præ fíliis hóminum castis suscépit viscéribus:

℟ The heart of the Virgin was confirmed, in whom, at the Angel's announcement, she conceived the divine mysteries: then with chaste womb she received him who is beautiful in form above the sons of men:

Et benedícta in ætérnum, Deum nobis prótulit et hóminem.

And blessed for ever, she brought forth for us God and man.

℣ Domus pudíci péctoris templum repénte fit Dei: intácta nésciens virum, verbo concépit Fílium.

℣ The house of a chaste heart becomes at once a temple of God; untouched, knowing no man, she conceived the Son by a word.

℟ Et benedícta in ætérnum, Deum nobis prótulit et hóminem.

℟ And blessed for ever, she brought forth for us God and man.

14 Peccátum enim vobis non dominábitur: non enim sub lege estis, sed sub grátia.
15 Quid ergo? peccábimus, quóniam non sumus sub lege, sed sub grátia? Absit.
16 Nescítis quóniam cui exhibétis vos servos ad obediéndum, servi estis eius, cui obedítis, sive peccáti ad mortem, sive obeditiónis ad iustítiam?
17 Grátias autem Deo quod fuístis servi peccáti, obedístis autem ex corde in eam formam doctrínæ, in quam tráditi estis.
18 Liberáti autem a peccáto, servi facti estis iustítiæ.

12 Therefore, let not sin reign in your mortal body, such that you would obey its desires.
13 Nor should you offer the parts of your body as instruments of iniquity for sin. Instead, offer yourselves to God, as if you were living after death, and offer the parts of your body as instruments of justice for God.
14 For sin should not have dominion over you. For you are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What is next? Should we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? Let it not be so!
16 Do you not know to whom you are offering yourselves as servants under obedience? You are the servants of whomever you obey: whether of sin, unto death, or of obedience, unto justice.
17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be the servants of sin, now you have been obedient from the heart to the very form of the doctrine into which you have been received.
18 And having been freed from sin, we have become servants of justice.

Festivitátis hodiérnæ, dilectíssimi, verus venerátor est, et pius cultor, qui nec de Incarnatióne Dómini áliquid falsum, nec de Deitáte áliquid sentit indígnum. Paris enim perículi malum est, si illi aut natúræ nostræ véritas, aut Patérnæ glóriæ negátur æquálitas. Cum ergo ad intellegéndum sacraméntum nativitátis Christi, qua de Matre vírgine est ortus, accédimus, abigátur procul terrenárum calígo ratiónum, et ab illuminátæ fídei óculo mundánæ sapiéntiæ fumus abscédat.

He is a true worshipper and devout celebrant of this day's feast, dearly beloved, who holds nothing false about the Incarnation of the Lord, nor anything unworthy about his Divinity. For it is an evil of equal danger if either the truth of our nature or the equality of the Father's glory is denied to him. When, therefore, we approach the understanding of the mystery of the nativity of Christ, by which he was born of a Virgin Mother, let the fog of earthly reasoning be driven far away, and let the smoke of worldly wisdom depart from the eye of enlightened faith.

Circumcíditur ítaque Puer. Quis est iste puer, nisi ille, de quo dictum est: Puer natus est nobis, Fílius datus est nobis? Factus est enim sub lege, ut eos, qui sub lege essent, lucrifáceret. Ut sísterent eum Dómino. Quid sit autem in Ierúsalem sisti Dómino, dícerem, nisi in Isaíæ comméntis ante dixíssem. Circumcísus enim vítiis, Domínico dignus iudicátur obtútu; quia, Oculi Dómini super iustos. Vides omnem legis véteris sériem fuísse typum futúri: nam et circumcísio purgatiónem signíficat delictórum.

The Child is therefore circumcised. Who is this child, if not he of whom it was said: A child is born to us, a Son is given to us? For he was made under the law, that he might gain those who were under the law. That they might present him to the Lord. What it means to be presented to the Lord in Jerusalem, I would explain, had I not already done so in my commentary on Isaiah. For one who is circumcised from vices is judged worthy of the Lord's gaze; for, The eyes of the Lord are upon the just. You see that the whole series of the old law was a type of what was to come: for circumcision too signifies the purification of offenses.

Hoc est enim illud: Quia omne masculínum adapériens vulvam, sanctum Dómino vocábitur. Verbis enim legis promittebátur Vírginis partus. Et vere sanctus, quia immaculátus. Dénique ipsum esse, qui lege signétur, in eúndem modum ab Angelo repetíta verba declárant: Quod nascétur, inquit, Sanctum, vocábitur Fílius Dei.

But since the fragility of human flesh and mind is entangled in inextricable vices through a certain headlong desire of sinning, the future purification of all guilt was prefigured by the eighth day of circumcision, that is, by the age of the Resurrection. For it is this that is meant: Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord. For by the words of the law the birth of a Virgin was promised. And truly holy, because without stain. Moreover, that it is he who is signified by the law, the words of the Angel, repeated in the same manner, declare: What shall be born, he says, shall be called Holy, the Son of God.

For the holy Lord Jesus alone is holy in every respect among those born of woman: he who, by the newness of an immaculate birth, neither experienced the contagion of earthly corruption nor was subdued by it, but repelled it by his heavenly majesty. For if we follow the letter: how is every male holy, when it is well known that many have been most wicked? Was Ahab holy? Were the false prophets holy, whom the avenging fire of heaven consumed at the prayer of Elijah? But he is holy whom the pious ordinances of the divine law signified in the figure of a coming mystery; inasmuch as he alone would open the fruitful secret of the immaculate virginity of the holy Church the virgin, for the begetting of the peoples of God.
