29 iurávit rex, et ait: Vivit Dóminus, qui éruit ánimam meam de omni angústia,
30 quia, sicut iurávi tibi per Dóminum Deum Israël dicens: Sálomon fílius tuus regnábit post me et ipse sedébit super sólium meum pro me, sic fáciam hódie.
31 Summissóque Bethsabée in terram vultu, adorávit regem, dicens: Vivat dóminus meus David in ætérnum.
28 And king David responded, saying: "Summon to me Bathsheba." And when she had entered before the king, and she had stood before him,
29 the king swore and said: "As the Lord lives, who has rescued my soul from all distress,
30 just as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel, saying: 'Your son Solomon shall reign after me, and he himself shall sit upon my throne in my place,' so shall I do this day."

Victor, born in Africa, governed the Church under the Emperor Severus. He confirmed the decree of Pope Pius I, that the sacred Passover be celebrated on the Lord's Day; and in order that this custom might thereafter prevail, councils were held in many places; and finally at the first Nicene Synod it was decreed that the feast of Easter be observed after the fourteenth moon, lest Christians should seem to imitate the Jews. He established that any person, if necessity required, could be baptized with any water, provided it be natural. He expelled Theodotus the Tanner of Byzantium from the Church for teaching that Christ was merely a man. He wrote on the question of Easter and certain other short works. In two ordinations in the month of December he created four priests, seven deacons, and twelve bishops for various places. Crowned with martyrdom, he was buried in the Vatican on the fifth day before the Kalends of August. He held his see for nine years, one month, and twenty-eight days.

Innocent, formerly called Peter of Tarentaise, was born around the year twelve hundred and twenty-five. Abundantly gifted and of noble family and of gracious appearance, from an early age he devoted himself and all that was his to God in the Order of Preachers. Formed for almost thirty years in religious observance and sacred letters in the monastery at Paris with the greatest thoroughness, he ascended the summit of wisdom and holiness. Called once and again to teach theological disciplines at the University of Paris and to govern the Province of his Order, he was an outstanding master of sacred science and a superior most welcome among his brethren. He formed the peoples of France in the preaching of the word of God with the most abundant fruit of souls, and won for himself no slight renown as a speaker.

He warns that the blandishments of words and the pretense of meekness must be weighed by the fruit of one's deeds; so that we look not at what a person professes in words, but at what he shows himself to be in deeds; because in many, the rage of the wolf is concealed beneath the clothing of sheep. Therefore, as thorns do not produce grapes, nor thistles figs, and as corrupt trees do not bring forth useful fruit; so likewise he teaches that the effect of good works does not reside in such persons, and therefore all are to be known by their fruits. For the kingdom of heaven is not obtained by the mere service of words; nor will he who says Lord, Lord be its heir.

For what merit is there in calling the Lord, 'Lord'? Surely the Lord will not cease to be Lord unless we call him such? And what sanctity of duty consists in the utterance of a name, when the path to the heavenly Kingdom is to be found by obedience to the will of God, not by uttering his name? Many will say to me on that day: Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? Even now he condemns the fraud of false prophets and the pretense of hypocrites, who presume for themselves glory from the power of the word, in the prophecy of doctrine, in the expulsion of demons, and in the powers of such works.

From our own doing, therefore, is that blessed eternity to be merited, and something from what is properly ours is to be furnished, so that we may will the good, avoid all evil, obey the heavenly precepts with our whole affection, and by such offices be known to God, and do rather what he wills than glory in what he can do; repudiating and repelling those whom works of iniquity have turned away from his knowledge.
