2 Caríssimi, nunc fílii Dei sumus: et nondum appáruit quid érimus. Scimus quóniam cum apparúerit, símiles ei érimus: quóniam vidébimus eum sícuti est.
3 Et omnis qui habet hanc spem in eo, sanctíficat se, sicut et ille sanctus est.

1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we would be called, and would become, the sons of God.
2 Most beloved, we are now the sons of God. But what we shall be then has not yet appeared.
3 And everyone who holds this hope in him, keeps himself holy, just as he also is holy.
4 Everyone who commits a sin, also commits iniquity. For sin is iniquity.
5 And you know that he appeared in order that he might take away our sins. For in him there is no sin.
6 Everyone who abides in him does not sin. For whoever sins has not seen him, and has not known him.

7 Little sons, let no one deceive you. Whoever does justice is just, even as he also is just.
8 Whoever commits sin is of the devil. For the devil sins from the beginning. For this reason, the Son of God appeared, so that he might eradicate the works of the devil.
9 All those who have been born of God do not commit sin. For the offspring of God abides in them, and he is not able to sin, because he was born of God.
10 In this way, the sons of God are made manifest, and also the sons of the devil. Everyone who is not just, is not of God, as also anyone who does not love his brother.
11 For this is the announcement that you heard from the beginning: that you should love one another.
12 Do not be like Cain, who was of the evil one, and who killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked, but his brother's works were just.

℟ All the beauty of the Lord is exalted above the stars:

Spécies eius in núbibus cæli, et nomen eius in ætérnum pérmanet, allelúia.

16 We know the love of God in this way: because he laid down his life for us. And so, we must lay down our lives for our brothers.
17 Whoever possesses the goods of this world, and sees his brother to be in need, and yet closes his heart to him: in what way does the love of God abide in him?
18 My little sons, let us not love in words only, but in works and in truth.

Christus ascéndens in cælum, nostræ natúræ primítias óbtulit Patri, et oblátum donum mirátus est Pater, quod et tanta dígnitas offerébat; et quod offerebátur, nulla mácula fœdabátur. Nam et suis mánibus suscépit oblátum, et suæ sedis fecit esse partícipem, et quod plus est, ad partem suæ déxteræ collocávit. Cognoscámus, quis est ille qui audívit, Sede ad déxteram meam: quæ natúra est, cui Deus dixit, Esto meæ párticeps sedis. Illa natúra est, quæ audívit: Terra es, et in terram ibis.

Christ ascending into heaven offered to the Father the first-fruits of our nature, and the Father marveled at the gift offered — both because so great a dignity was offering it, and because what was offered was defiled by no stain. For he received the offering in his own hands, and made it a partaker of his throne, and, what is more, placed it at the right hand of his seat. Let us recognize who it is that heard: Sit at my right hand — what nature it is to which God said: Be a partaker of my throne. That is the nature which heard: You are dust, and to dust you shall return.

For it was not sufficient to have passed beyond all the heavens to glory, nor to stand among the Angels: but he passed beyond the heavens, ascended above the Cherubim, was raised beyond the Seraphim, and did not halt until he had merited the throne of the Lord. Consider how great a space separates heaven from earth — indeed how far the earth is from the lower regions — and how much heaven is separated from the higher heaven, and from the higher heaven what a distance there is to the Angels, even to the higher Powers, and to the very throne of the Lord. Above all these was our nature elevated, so that man, who was held in so lowly a place that he could not descend further, was raised to so lofty a seat that he could not ascend higher.

Learn therefore who it is that ascended, and what nature was exalted. For on this I wish to linger in discourse, that with all admiration we may learn the divine clemency in its remembrance of the human race — a clemency that has bestowed the highest honor and great glory upon our nature, which today has merited to be found more exalted than all things. Today Angels and Archangels have beheld our nature shining with immortal glory in the seat of the Lord.

Sed áliud est cælum ǽreum, áliud æthéreum. Cælum quippe ǽreum terræ est próximum: unde et aves cæli dícimus, quia eas volitáre in aëre vidémus. And indeed the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God. In the Old Testament we have learned that Elijah was caught up into heaven. But there is one heaven of the air, and another heaven of the ether. The lower heaven is near to the earth; hence we speak of the birds of heaven, because we see them flying in the air. Elijah, therefore, was taken up into the lower heaven, so that he might be suddenly brought to some hidden region of the earth, where he might live in great peace of flesh and spirit, until he returns at the end of the world and pays the debt of death. For he deferred death, he did not escape it. But our Redeemer, because he did not defer it, overcame it, and by rising again consumed it, and by ascending declared the glory of his Resurrection.

Just as Joseph, sold by his brothers, prefigured the betrayal of our Redeemer: so Enoch, who was translated, and Elijah, who was lifted up to the aerial heaven, both together signified the Lord's Ascension. The Lord therefore had forerunners and witnesses of his Ascension, one before the Law, another under the Law: so that one day he himself might come who could in truth penetrate the heavens. And the very order of these events is distinguished in their respective elevations by certain degrees of increase. For Enoch is said to have been translated, while Elijah is recorded as having been carried up to heaven: that there might come afterward one who, neither translated nor carried up, should penetrate the ethereal heaven by his own power.
