3 Et nemo póterat neque in cælo, neque in terra, neque subtus terram aperíre librum, neque respícere illum.
4 Et ego flebam multum, quóniam nemo dignus invéntus est aperíre librum, nec vidére eum.

1 And in the right hand of the One sitting upon the throne, I saw a book, written inside and out, sealed with seven seals.
2 And I saw a strong Angel, proclaiming with a great voice, 'Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?'
3 And no one was able, neither in heaven, nor on earth, nor under the earth, to open the book, nor to gaze upon it.
4 And I wept greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book, nor to see it.
5 And one of the elders said to me: 'Weep not. Behold, the lion from the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has prevailed to open the book and to break its seven seals.'
6 And I saw, and behold, in the midst of the throne and the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb was standing, as if it were slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God, sent forth to all the earth.
7 And he approached and received the book from the right hand of the One sitting upon the throne.

9 et cantábant cánticum novum, dicéntes: Dignus es, Dómine, accípere librum, et aperíre signácula eius: quóniam occísus es, et redemísti nos Deo in sánguine tuo ex omni tribu, et lingua, et pópulo, et natióne:

8 And when he had opened the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having stringed instruments, as well as golden bowls full of fragrances, which are the prayers of the saints.
9 And they were singing a new canticle, saying: 'O Lord, you are worthy to receive the book and to open its seals, because you were slain and have redeemed us for God, by your blood, from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 And you have made us into a kingdom and into priests for our God, and we shall reign over the earth.'

13 And every creature that is in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, and all that is within the sea: I heard them all saying: 'To the One sitting upon the throne and to the Lamb be blessing, and honor, and glory, and authority, forever and ever.'
14 And the four living creatures were saying, 'Amen.' And the twenty-four elders fell down on their faces, and they adored the One who lives forever and ever.

Not falsely was it said by the Angel to Joseph: Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife. She is called wife by reason of the first pledge of betrothal, even though he had not known her by intercourse and was never to know her; nor had the name of wife been lost or become a falsehood, where there had been and would be no mingling of flesh at all. She was indeed a Virgin; and for that reason she was more holy and more wonderful in her husband's eyes, because she was also fruitful without a husband — unlike him in offspring, yet like him in faith. On account of which, both merited to be called the parents of Christ in a faithful marriage; and not only she as mother, but also he as her father, as the husband of her mother — each parent in mind, not in flesh. Whether he was father in mind alone, or she was mother both in mind and in flesh, both were parents of his humility, not of his sublimity; of his weakness, not of his divinity.

Why then was he subject to those who were far beneath the form of God, unless because he emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, whose form both those parents bore? But surely both of them could not be parents even of that form of a servant unless they were also spouses to one another — even without mingling of flesh. Hence also the series of generations, when the parents of Christ are recounted in the connected succession, should have been carried, as was done, rather to Joseph, lest injury be done to the male sex, certainly the more honored, in that marriage — since nothing would be lost to the truth, because both Joseph and Mary were of the seed of David, from whom Christ was foretold to come. Thus all the good of marriage was fulfilled in those parents of Christ: offspring, fidelity, sacrament. We know the offspring to be the Lord Jesus himself; fidelity, in that there was no adultery; the sacrament, in that there was no divorce.

Today is in some manner a second birthday of the Savior. For we recognize him born by the same signs, by the same miracles, but now baptized by a greater mystery. For God says: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. The second nativity is plainly more illustrious than the first. For the first brought forth Christ in silence, without a witness; this one baptized the Lord with the profession of his divinity. From the first Joseph, who was thought to be his father, excuses himself; in this one the Father, who was not believed, makes himself known. There the Mother is beset by suspicions, because a father was lacking to confirm the profession; here the Mother of God is honored, because the Divinity bears witness to the Son.

Joseph the carpenter was therefore thought to be the earthly father of the Lord and Savior, nor is God, who is truly the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, excluded from this work; for he himself is also a craftsman.

For he is the Craftsman who fashioned the structure of this world not only with admirable but with unspeakable power; like a wise architect, he suspended the sky in its height, founded the earth in its mass, and bounded the seas with their shores. He is the Craftsman who cuts down the summits of pride to a certain measure, and raises up those who are utterly lowly. He is the Craftsman who in our conduct trims away superfluous works and preserves all that is useful. He is the Craftsman whose axe, laid at our root, John the Baptist threatens, so that every tree which has overstepped the measure of just discernment may be cut down at the root and consigned to the fire; while that which has kept the measure of truth may be set apart for the heavenly building.
