Hymnus

Jam lucis orto sídere,

Deum precémur súpplices,

Ut in diúrnis áctibus

Nos servet a nocéntibus.

Linguam refrénans témperet,

Ne litis horror ínsonet:

Visum fovéndo cóntegat,

Ne vanitátes háuriat.

Sint pura cordis íntima,

Absístat et vecórdia;

Carnis terat supérbiam

Potus cibíque párcitas.

Ut, cum dies abscésserit,

Noctémque sors redúxerit,

Mundi per abstinéntiam

Ipsi canámus glóriam.

Deo Patri sit glória,

Ejúsque soli Fílio,

Cum Spíritu Paráclito,

Nunc et per omne sǽculum.

Amen.

Now that the sun has risen,

Let us humbly pray to God,

That in our daily actions

He may keep us from all harm.

May he hold back and bridle the tongue,

Lest the din of strife ring out:

May he guard the eyes with care,

Lest they drink in vanities.

Let the depths of the heart be pure,

And let folly be far away;

May sparing use of food and drink

Curb the pride of the flesh.

That when the day shall pass away

And fortune bring back the night,

Pure through abstinence,

We may ourselves sing his glory.

To God the Father be glory,

And to his only Son,

With the Spirit the Paraclete,

Now and through every age.

Amen.

118:21 Increpásti supérbos: * maledícti qui declínant a mandátis tuis.

118:22 Aufer a me oppróbrium, et contémptum: * quia testimónia tua exquisívi.

118:23 Étenim sedérunt príncipes, et advérsum me loquebántur: * servus autem tuus exercebátur in justificatiónibus tuis.

118:24 Nam et testimónia tua meditátio mea est: * et consílium meum justificatiónes tuæ.

118:25 (Daleth) Adhǽsit paviménto ánima mea: * vivífica me secúndum verbum tuum.

Psalm 53 [1]

53:3 Save me, O God, by your name, * and judge me by your power.

53:4 O God, listen to my prayer. * Pay attention to the words of my mouth.

53:5 For strangers have risen up against me, and the strong have sought my soul. * And they have not set God before their eyes.

53:6 For behold, God is my helper, * and the Lord is the protector of my soul.

53:7 Turn back the evils upon my adversaries, * and ruin them by your truth.

53:8 I will freely sacrifice to you, * and I will confess your name, O Lord, because it is good.

53:9 For you have rescued me from all tribulation, * and my eye has looked down upon my enemies.

118:1 (Aleph) Blessed are the immaculate in the way, * who walk in the law of the Lord.

118:2 Blessed are those who examine his testimonies. * They seek him with their whole heart.

118:3 For those who work iniquity * have not walked in his ways.

118:4 You have ordered * your commandments to be kept most diligently.

118:5 I wish that my ways may be directed * so as to keep your justifications.

118:6 Then I will not be confounded, * when I will look into all your commandments.

118:7 I will confess to you with honesty of heart, * because I have learned the judgments of your justice.

118:8 I will keep your justifications. * Do not utterly abandon me.

118:9 (Beth) By what does an adolescent correct his way? * By keeping to your words.

118:10 With my whole heart, I have sought you. * Do not let me be driven away from your commandments.

118:11 I have hidden your eloquence in my heart, * so that I may not sin against you.

118:12 Blessed are you, O Lord. * Teach me your justifications.

118:13 With my lips, * I have pronounced all the judgments of your mouth.

118:14 I have been delighted in the way of your testimonies, * as if in all riches.

118:15 I will be trained in your commandments, * and I will consider your ways.

118:16 I will meditate on your justifications. * I will not forget your words.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

118:18 Uncover my eyes, * and I will consider the wonders of your law.

118:19 I am a sojourner on the earth. * Do not hide your commandments from me.

118:20 My soul has longed to desire your justifications * at all times.

118:21 You have rebuked the arrogant. * Those who decline from your commandments are accursed.

118:22 Take disgrace and contempt away from me, * for I have sought your testimonies.

118:23 For even the leaders sat and spoke against me. * But your servant has been trained in your justifications.

118:24 For your testimonies are also my meditation, * and your justifications are my counsel.

118:25 (Daleth) My soul has adhered to the pavement. * Revive me according to your word.

118:26 I have declared my ways, and you have heeded me. * Teach me your justifications.

118:27 Instruct me in the way of your justifications, * and I will be trained in your wonders.

118:28 My soul has slumbered because of weariness. * Confirm me in your words.

118:29 Remove the way of iniquity from me, * and have mercy on me by your law.

118:30 I have chosen the way of truth. * I have not forgotten your judgments.

118:31 I have adhered to your testimonies, O Lord. * Do not be willing to confound me.

118:32 I have run by way of your commandments, * when you enlarged my heart.

℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

The Thirtieth of September. The eighteenth day of the moon. In the year of our Lord 2026.

At Bethlehem of Judea, the burial of Saint Jerome, Priest, Confessor, and Doctor of the Church, who, having mastered every branch of learning and become an imitator of approved Monks, pierced many monsters of heresy with the sword of his doctrine; at last, having lived to extreme old age, he rested in peace and was buried near the Manger of the Lord. His body was afterward brought to Rome and enshrined in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

At Rome, the heavenly birthday of Saint Francis Borgia, Priest and Confessor; who was Superior General of the Society of Jesus, and was a memorable man for the austerity of his life, the gift of prayer, and for having renounced worldly dignities and refused those of the Church. His feast is celebrated on the tenth of October.

At Lisieux, in Gaul, likewise the heavenly birthday of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, of the Order of Discalced Carmelites. Most renowned for the innocence and simplicity of her life, she was enrolled in the register of holy Virgins by Pope Pius XI, who declared her the special Patroness of all the Missions, and decreed that her feast should be kept on the third of October.

At Rome, Saint Leopardus, Martyr, who was of the household of Julian the Apostate; his head was cut off, and his body was afterward translated to Aachen.

At Solothurn, in Gaul, the passion of the holy Martyrs Victor and Ursus, of the glorious Theban Legion, who, under the Emperor Maximian, were first tortured with dire torments, but, as a heavenly light flashed above them and the executioners fell to the ground, were rescued; then cast into fire, yet not harmed in the least; and finally consummated by the sword.

At Piacenza, Saint Antoninus, Martyr, of the same legion.

On the same day, Saint Gregory, Bishop of Greater Armenia, who under Diocletian suffered greatly, and at last rested in peace in the time of the Emperor Constantine the Great.

At Canterbury, in England, Saint Honorius, Bishop and Confessor.

At Rome, Saint Sophia, Widow, mother of the holy Virgins and Martyrs Faith, Hope, and Charity.

℣ And elsewhere of many other holy Martyrs and Confessors, and holy Virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℣ Precious in the sight of the Lord.

℟ The death of his Saints.

May holy Mary and all the Saints intercede for us to the Lord, that we may merit to be helped and saved by him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

℟ Amen.
