Come, let us exult in the Lord. Let us shout joyfully to God, our Savior. Let us anticipate his presence with confession, and let us sing joyfully to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God and a great King over all gods. For the Lord will not drive away his people. For in his hand are all the limits of the earth, and he beholds the heights of the mountains.

45:2 Our God is our refuge and strength, * a helper in the tribulations that have greatly overwhelmed us.

45:3 Because of this, we will not be afraid when the earth will be turbulent * and the mountains will be transferred into the heart of the sea.

45:4 They thundered, and the waters were stirred up among them; * the mountains have been disturbed by his strength.

45:5 The rushing of the river rejoices the city of God. * The Most High has sanctified his tabernacle.

45:6 God is in its midst; it will not be shaken. * God will assist it in the early morning.

47:4 In her houses, God will be known, * since he will support her.

47:5 For behold, the kings of the earth have been gathered together; * they have convened as one.

47:6 Such did they see, and they were astonished: they were disturbed, they were moved. * Trembling took hold of them.

47:7 In that place, their pains were that of a woman in labor. * With a vehement spirit, you will crush the ships of Tarshish.

48:2 Hear these things, all nations. * Pay attention, all inhabitants of the world:

48:3 whoever is earth-born, you sons of men, * together as one, the rich and the poor.

48:4 My mouth will speak wisdom, * and the meditation of my heart will speak prudence.

48:5 I will incline my ear to a parable. * I will open my case with the psaltery.

48:6 Why should I fear in the evil day? * The iniquity at my heel will surround me.

48:7 Those who trust in their own strength * and who glory in the multitude of their riches,

48:8 no brother redeems, nor will man buy back. * He will not give to God his appeasement,

48:9 nor the price for the redemption of his soul. * And he will labor continuously, and he will still live, until the end.

Lesson 1

Marc 9:16-28

At that time: One from the crowd responded by saying to Jesus: Teacher, I have brought to you my son, who has a mute spirit. Etc.

A Homily of Saint Bede the Venerable, Priest

Book 3, chapter 38, on Mark, chapter 9

This demoniac, whom the Lord healed as he came down from the mountain, is described by Mark as deaf and mute; but Matthew recalls that he was a lunatic. He signifies those of whom it is written: The fool is changed like the moon. Never remaining in the same state, they are turned to those vices and wax and wane. They are mute, in not confessing the faith; deaf, in not hearing even to any degree the word of truth. They foam, when they pine away with folly; for it is proper to the foolish and the languid and the dull to let foam of spittle flow from the mouth. They gnash their teeth, when they blaze with the fury of anger; they wither, when they grow languid with sluggish idleness, and, not strengthened by any diligence of virtue, they live without vigor.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ We have heard of the tribulations of cities, what they have suffered, and we have fainted: fear and numbness of mind fell upon us and upon our children: the very mountains will not receive our flight:

* O Lord, have mercy.

℣ We have sinned with our fathers, we have acted unjustly, we have done iniquity.

℟ O Lord, have mercy.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Lesson 2

As for the fact that he says: And I told your disciples to cast him out, and they could not; he covertly reproaches the Apostles — though the inability to effect a cure is sometimes attributed not to the weakness of those who cure, but to the faith of those who are to be cured, as the Lord says: Let it be done to you according to your faith. And answering them, he said: O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I endure you? Not that he who is gentle and meek — who did not open his mouth like a lamb before its shearer, nor broke out into words of fury — was overcome by weariness; but as if in the manner of a physician, who, seeing a patient behaving contrary to his prescriptions, might say: How long shall I come to your house? How long am I to waste the labor of my art, when I order one thing and you do another?

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ At all times bless God, and ask him to direct your ways,

* And let all your counsels remain in him at all times.

℣ Seek to do what is pleasing to him in truth, and with all your strength.

Lesson 3

And he said to them: This kind can go out by nothing, except by prayer and fasting. While he teaches the Apostles how the most wicked demon must be cast out, he instructs all in the manner of life; so that we may know that the gravest temptations, whether of unclean spirits or of men, are to be overcome by fasting and prayer, and that the wrath of the Lord, when it is kindled for the punishment of our crimes, can be appeased by this one remedy. But fasting is general, meaning abstinence not only from foods but from all the allurements of the flesh — indeed, holding oneself back from all the passions of vices. So also general prayer consists not in words alone, by which we invoke the divine clemency, but also in everything that we do in the devotion of faith, in service to our Creator.

℣ But you, O Lord, have mercy on us.

℟ Thanks be to God.

℟ Remember, my son, that we live a life of poverty:

* You will have many good things, if you fear God.

℣ Keep him in mind, and take care never to neglect his commandments.
