9 scílicet advérsus Chodorláhomor regem Elamitárum, et Thadal regem Géntium, et Amraphel regem Sénnaar, et Arioch regem Ponti: quátuor reges advérsus quinque.
10 Vallis autem Silvéstris habébat púteos multos bitúminis. Itaque rex Sodomórum, et Gomórrhæ, terga vertérunt, ceciderúntque ibi: et qui remánserant, fugérunt ad montem.
11 Tulérunt autem omnem substántiam Sodomórum et Gomórrhæ, et univérsa quæ ad cibum pértinent, et abiérunt:

8 And the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and indeed the king of Bela, which is Zoar, went forth. And they directed their ranks against them in the wooded valley,
9 namely against Chedorlaomer, king of the Elamites, and Tidal, king of the Nations, and Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Pontus: four kings against five.
10 Now the wooded valley had many pits of bitumen. And so the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah turned back, and they fell there. And those who remained fled to the mountain.
11 Then they took all the substance of the Sodomites and the Gomorrahites, and all that pertained to food, and they went away,
12 along with both Lot, the son of Abram's brother, who lived in Sodom, and his substance.

Do not stretch out your hand against the boy, because you fear the Lord.

14 Quod cum audísset Abram, captum vidélicet Lot fratrem suum, numerávit expedítos vernáculos suos trecéntos decem et octo: et persecútus est usque Dan.
15 Et divísis sóciis, írruit super eos nocte: percussítque eos, et persecútus est eos usque Hoba, quæ est ad lævam Damásci.
16 Reduxítque omnem substántiam, et Lot fratrem suum cum substántia illíus, mulíeres quoque et pópulum.

13 And behold, one who had escaped reported it to Abram the Hebrew, who lived in the steep valley of Mamre the Amorite, who was the brother of Eshcol, and the brother of Aner. For these had formed an agreement with Abram.
14 When Abram had heard this, namely, that his brother Lot had been taken captive, he numbered three hundred and eighteen of his own armed men and he went in pursuit all the way to Dan.
15 And dividing his company, he rushed upon them in the night. And he struck them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
16 And he brought back all the substance, and Lot his brother, with his substance, likewise the women and the people.

℟ The Angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time, saying: I will bless you,

Et multiplicábo te sicut stellas cæli.

17 Then the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after he returned from the slaughter at Chedorlaomer, and the kings who were with him at the valley of Shaveh, which is the valley of the king.
18 Then in truth, Melchizedek, the king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine, for he was a priest of the Most High God;
19 he blessed him, and he said: 'Blessed be Abram by the Most High God, who created heaven and earth.
20 And blessed be the Most High God, through whose protection the enemies are in your hands.' And he gave him tithes from everything.

On a certain day she came, as was her custom, and her venerable brother came down to her with his disciples; and they spent the whole day in the praises of God and sacred conversation; and when the darkness of night was already gathering, they took food together. And while they were still sitting at table, and the hour prolonged itself amid holy discourse, that consecrated woman, his sister, begged him, saying: I pray you, do not leave me tonight, that until morning we may speak of the joys of the heavenly life. But he replied: What are you saying, sister? On no account can I remain outside my cell. The sky at that time was so serene that not a single cloud appeared in the air. But that consecrated woman, when she heard the refusing words of her brother, placed her head on her hands and bowed down to pray to the almighty Lord. And when she raised her head from the table, so great a flash of lightning and crack of thunder broke forth, and so great a flood of rain poured down, that neither the venerable Benedict nor the brethren who were with him could move a foot outside the threshold of the place where they were sitting.

For the consecrated woman, lowering her head into her hands, had poured a river of tears upon the table, through which she drew the clear air to rain. Nor did that flood of rain follow long after her prayer; but the harmony between prayer and flood was such that even as she raised her head from the table with the thunder, one and the same moment was both the raising of her head and the descent of the rain. Then the man of God, amid lightning and thunder and the flooding of a mighty rain, seeing that he could not return to the monastery, began to complain in sorrow, saying: May almighty God pardon you, sister: what have you done? She answered him: Behold, I begged you and you were unwilling to hear me; I prayed to my God and he heard me. Now therefore, if you can, go out and, leaving me, return to the monastery. But he, unable to go out of doors, who had been unwilling to remain of his own choice, remained against his will. And so it came to pass that they spent the whole night in vigil, and through the sacred conversations of the spiritual life refreshed one another in mutual exchange.

Rejoicing at her so great glory, he returned thanks to almighty God in hymns and praises, and announced her death to the brothers. He also sent them immediately to bring her body to the monastery and to place it in the tomb which he himself had prepared. By which deed it came to pass that those whose mind had always been one in God, their bodies also should not be separated in burial.

Redémptor noster, prǽvidens ex passióne sua discipulórum ánimos perturbándos, eis longe ante et eiúsdem passiónis pœnam, et resurrectiónis suæ glóriam prædíxit: ut cum eum moriéntem, sicut prædíctum est, cérnerent; étiam resurrectúrum non dubitárent. Sed quia carnáles adhuc discípuli nullo modo valébant cápere verba mystérii, venítur ad miráculum. Ante eórum óculos cæcus lumen recépit: ut qui cæléstis mystérii verba non cáperent, eos ad fidem cæléstia facta solidárent.

Our Redeemer, foreseeing that the minds of his disciples would be troubled by his Passion, foretold to them long beforehand both the suffering of that same Passion and the glory of his Resurrection: so that, when they saw him dying as had been foretold, they might not doubt that he would also rise again. But because the disciples were still carnal and in no way able to grasp the words of the mystery, he comes to a miracle. Before their eyes, a blind man received the light: so that those who could not grasp the words of the heavenly mystery might be confirmed in faith by heavenly deeds.

℟ Today I came to the spring of water, and I prayed to the Lord, saying:

Dómine, Deus Abraham, tu prósperum fecísti desidérium meum.

O Lord, God of Abraham, you have made my desire prosper.

Opera quippe eius et per poténtiam áliud osténdunt, et per mystérium áliud loquúntur. Ecce enim, quis iuxta históriam cæcus iste fúerit, ignorámus: sed tamen quid per mystérium signíficet, nóvimus. Cæcum quippe est genus humánum, quod in parénte primo a paradísi gáudiis expúlsum, claritátem supérnæ lucis ignórans, damnatiónis suæ ténebras pátitur. Sed tamen per Redemptóris sui præséntiam illuminátur: ut intérnæ lucis gáudia iam per desidérium vídeat, atque in via vitæ boni óperis gressus ponat.

But the miracles of our Lord and Savior must be received in this way, dearest brethren, that they be believed as truly done, and yet that through their signification they intimate something to us. For his works show one thing by their power and speak another thing by their mystery. For indeed, who that man was who was blind according to the history, we do not know: but nevertheless what he signifies through the mystery, we know. For the human race is blind, which, cast out in its first parent from the joys of paradise, and ignorant of the brightness of the heavenly light, suffers the darkness of its damnation. Yet it is illuminated through the presence of its Redeemer: so that it may now see the joys of the interior light through desire, and set the steps of good works upon the way of life.

℟ Factus est sermo Dómini ad Abram, dicens:

℟ The word of the Lord came to Abram, saying:

Noli timére, Abram: ego protéctor tuus sum, et merces tua magna nimis.

Fear not, Abram: I am your protector, and your reward is exceedingly great.
