At Jerusalem, the birth of Saint Stephen, the First Martyr, who was stoned by the Jews not long after the Ascension of the Lord.
At Rome, Saint Marinus, a man of senatorial rank, who, under the Emperor Numerian and the Prefect Marcianus, seized for the cause of the Christian religion, punished on the rack and with claws as though a slave, then cast into a frying pan, but, with the fire turned to dew, was freed, also thrown to the beasts and not at all harmed by them; at last, brought again to an altar, and when the idols fell at his prayer, struck with a sword, he obtained the triumph of martyrdom.
In the same city, on the Appian Way, the deposition of Saint Dionysius, Pope, who, having spent many labors for the Church, shone with the proofs of faith.
