Bruno, founder of the Carthusian religious order, was born at Cologne. From his very cradle he showed a foretaste of his future holiness; and, by the favor of divine grace declining the ways of childhood for that age of his, so excellent was he in gravity of morals that he was already recognized as a future father of monks and restorer of the anchoritic life. Sent by his parents, who were distinguished in birth and virtue, to Paris, he made such progress in the studies of philosophy and theology that he obtained the title of Doctor and Master in both faculties; and not long after, by reason of his outstanding virtues, he obtained a canonry of the church of Reims.

After several years had passed, renouncing the world together with six other companions, he approached Saint Hugh, Bishop of Grenoble. Having learned the cause of their coming, and understanding them to be the same men whom he had seen the same night in a dream as seven stars falling at his feet, he granted them the most rugged mountains of his diocese, called the Chartreuse. Thither Bruno withdrew with his companions, Hugh himself accompanying them; and after he had lived the eremitic life for some years, he was summoned to Rome by Urban the Second, who had been a disciple of Bruno himself. The Pope made use of his counsel and learning amid so many calamities of the Church for several years, until Bruno, refusing the archbishopric of Reggio, obtained leave to depart.

In that place, when Roger, Count of Calabria, found him praying while out hunting, his dogs barking at the entrance of his cave, the Count was moved by the holiness of the man and began earnestly to cherish and support him and his companions. Nor was this generosity without reward; for when the same Roger was besieging Capua, and a certain Sergius, commander of the watch, had resolved to betray him, Bruno — still living in the said wilderness — revealed everything to the Count in a dream and freed him from the imminent danger. Finally, full of virtues and merits, renowned no less for holiness than for the fame of his learning, he fell asleep in the Lord; and was buried in the monastery of Saint Stephen, built by Roger himself, where he is honorably venerated to this day.

I recall that I have often said that in the holy Gospel the present Church is frequently called the kingdom of heaven: for the assembly of the righteous is called the kingdom of heaven. Because the Lord says through the prophet: Heaven is my throne; and Solomon says: The soul of the just is the throne of wisdom; and Paul likewise says that Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God; we ought clearly to conclude that, if God is wisdom, and the soul of the just is the throne of wisdom, then since heaven is called the throne of God, heaven is therefore the soul of the just. Hence it is said by the Psalmist concerning the holy preachers: The heavens declare the glory of God.

℟ This is he who before God worked great deeds of power, and with his whole heart praised the Lord:

May he intercede for the sins of all peoples.

℣ Behold a man without complaint, a true worshiper of God, abstaining from every evil work, and remaining in his innocence.

More openly and more safely, therefore, it can be said that in this the Father made a wedding feast for his royal Son, in that through the mystery of the Incarnation he joined the holy Church to him. The womb of the Virgin Mother was the bridal chamber of this bridegroom.
