At Hippo Regius, in Africa, the birth of Saint Augustine, Bishop, Confessor and eminent Doctor of the Church, who, converted to the Catholic faith and baptized through the ministry of Bishop Saint Ambrose, defended it as a most vigorous champion against the Manicheans and other heretics, and, having fulfilled many other labors for the Church of God, passed to his reward in heaven. His relics, first brought from his own city because of the barbarians to Sardinia, were afterwards translated to Pavia by Luitprand, King of the Lombards, and honorably deposited there.
At Rome, likewise the birth of Saint Hermes, a distinguished man, who (as is read in the Acts of blessed Pope Alexander), first held in prison, was then, together with many others, put to the sword and completed his martyrdom, under the judge Aurelian.
At Venosa, in Apulia, the passion of Saints Septiminus, Januarius, and Felix, sons of Saints Boniface and Thecla, who were ordered to be beheaded by the judge Valerianus under the Emperor Maximian. Their feast and that of the rest of the twelve brothers is kept on the first of September.
