2 Fecítque Ioas rectum coram Dómino cunctis diébus quibus dócuit eum Ióiada sacérdos;
3 verúmtamen excélsa non ábstulit; adhuc enim pópulus immolábat, et adolébat in excélsis incénsum.
1 In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash reigned. And he reigned for forty years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Zebiah from Beersheba.
2 And Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the Lord, during all the days that Jehoiada, the priest, taught him.
3 Yet still he did not take away the high places. For the people were still immolating, and burning incense, in the high places.

℟ Lord, if your people have turned back and have prayed toward your sanctuary:

5 accípiant illam sacerdótes iuxta órdinem suum, et instáurent sartatécta domus, si quid necessárium víderint instauratióne.
4 All of the money for the holy things, which has been brought into the temple of the Lord from those who pass by, which is offered for the price of a soul, and which they bring into the temple of the Lord willingly, from their own free heart:
5 let the priests, according to their ranks, take and use it in order to repair the surfaces of the house, wherever they see anything in need of repair.

℟ It came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven,

7 Vocavítque rex Ioas Ióiadam pontíficem et sacerdótes, dicens eis: Quare sartatécta non instaurátis templi? Nolíte ergo ámplius accípere pecúniam iuxta órdinem vestrum; sed ad instauratiónem templi réddite eam.
8 Prohibitíque sunt sacerdótes ultra accípere pecúniam a pópulo, et instauráre sartatécta domus.
6 And yet, even until the twenty-third year of king Jehoash, the priests did not repair the surfaces of the temple.
7 And king Jehoash called the high priest, Jehoiada, and the priests, saying to them: 'Why have you not repaired the surfaces of the temple? Therefore, you may no longer accept money according to your ranks. Instead, return it in order that the temple may be repaired.'
8 And so the priests were prohibited from accepting any more money from the people to repair the surfaces of the house.

36:6 And he will bring forth your justice like the light, and your judgment like the midday: * be subject to the Lord and pray to him.
36:7 Do not choose to compete with him who prospers in his way: * with the man who does injustices.
36:8 Cease from wrath and leave behind rage: * do not choose to imitate the malicious.
36:9 For those who are malicious will be exterminated: * but those who remain with the Lord, these will inherit the land.
36:10 Yet still a little while, and the sinner will not be: * and you will search his place and find nothing.
36:11 But the meek shall inherit the earth: * and they will delight in the multitude of peace.
36:12 The sinner will observe the just: * and he will gnash his teeth over him.

Ignatius, a Spaniard by birth, of noble lineage from Loyola in Cantabria, first followed the court of the Catholic king, then the military life. While gravely laid up with a wound received in the defense of Pamplona, he was wonderfully inflamed by the chance reading of pious books to follow in the footsteps of Christ and the Saints. Going to Mount Serrat and laying down his arms before the altar of the Blessed Virgin, he kept vigil through the night and made his novitiate for the sacred soldiery. Thence, wearing sackcloth as he was, having first given his costly garments to a beggar, he withdrew to Manresa; where, living on begged bread and water, fasting except on Sundays, taming the flesh with a harsh chain and hairshirt, lying on the ground, and bloodying himself with iron whips, he remained for a year, so refreshed by clear illuminations from God that he was accustomed to say afterward: If the sacred Scriptures did not exist, he would nonetheless be prepared to die for the faith from those things alone which the Lord had revealed to him at Manresa. At that time, a man utterly unlettered, he composed that admirable book of the Exercises, approved by the judgment of the Apostolic See and by the benefit of all.

But above all, his care was to restore piety among Catholics. The splendor of the temples, the handing on of the catechism, the frequency of sermons and of the sacraments received increase from him. Gregory XV, illustrious for his great merits toward the Church and for miracles, enrolled him in the roll of the Saints; and Pius XI, acceding to the wishes of the sacred clergy, appointed and declared him the heavenly Patron of all Spiritual Exercises.

Our Lord and Savior, dearest brethren, admonishes us sometimes by words and sometimes by deeds. His very acts are precepts: for what he does in silence reveals what we ought to do. Behold, he sends the disciples forth in pairs to preach; for there are two commandments of charity, namely, the love of God and the love of neighbor; and charity cannot exist between fewer than two. For no one is said properly to have charity toward himself alone: but love reaches out to another, so that it may be charity.

Behold, the Lord sends out his disciples two by two to preach: that by this he may silently indicate to us that whoever has no charity toward another ought by no means to take up the office of preaching. And it is well said that he sent them before his face into every town and place where he himself was about to come. For the Lord follows his preachers: because preaching goes before, and then the Lord comes to the dwelling of our heart when the words of exhortation have run ahead; and thus truth is received into the mind.
