24 Congregávit Bénadad rex Sýriæ univérsum exércitum suum et ascéndit et obsidébat Samaríam.
25 Factáque est fames magna in Samaría, et támdiu obséssa est, donec venumdarétur caput ásini octogínta argénteis, et quarta pars cabi stércoris columbárum quinque argénteis.
26 Cumque rex Israël transíret per murum, múlier quædam exclamávit ad eum, dicens: Salva me, dómine mi rex.
27 Qui ait: Non te salvat Dóminus, unde te possum salváre? de área, vel de torculári?

24 Now it happened that, after these things, Benhadad, the king of Syria, gathered together his entire army, and he ascended and was besieging Samaria.
25 And a great famine occurred in Samaria. And it was blockaded for a long time, until the head of a donkey was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and one fourth part of a pint of pigeons' dung sold for five silver coins.
26 And as the king of Israel was passing by the wall, a certain woman cried out to him, saying, 'Save me, my lord the king!'
27 And he said: 'If the Lord does not save you, how am I able to save you? From the grain floor, or from the wine press?'

29 Therefore, we cooked my son, and we ate him. And I said to her on the next day, 'Give your son, so that we may eat him.' But she concealed her son.
30 When the king had heard this, he tore his garments, and he passed along the wall. And all the people saw the haircloth that he had worn underneath, beside his flesh.
31 And the king said, 'May God do these things to me, and may he add these other things, if the head of Elisha, the son of Shaphat, will remain on him this day!'
32 Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. And so he sent a man ahead. And before that messenger arrived, he said to the elders: 'Do you not know that this son of a murderer is sending someone to cut off my head?'

℟ God is the hearer of all: he himself sent his Angel, and took me from among the sheep of my father:

32 And so he sent a man ahead. And before that messenger arrived, he said to the elders: 'Do you not know that this son of a murderer is sending someone to cut off my head? Watch therefore: when the messenger comes, close the door, and do not allow him to enter. For the sound of his lord's feet is behind him.'
33 While he was still speaking to them, the messenger appeared who was sent to him. And he said: 'Behold, such a great evil is from the Lord! What more should I expect from the Lord?'
1 Then Elisha said: 'Listen to the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord: Tomorrow, at this time, one measure of fine wheat flour will be one silver coin, and two measures of barley will be one silver coin, at the gate of Samaria.'

Before us is set the chamber of Anna, reflecting at once the form of married life and of virginity: the former in the mother, the latter in the daughter; of whom the one was but recently freed from barrenness, while the other, a little later, was to give birth to Christ — formed by divine workmanship according to the condition of our nature, yet above nature. Rightly, therefore, does Anna, filled with the divine Spirit, resound with joyful and glad heart: Rejoice with me, you who have brought forth from a barren womb the offspring of the promise, and who nourish at my breast, as I had hoped, the fruit of blessing. I have put off the sadness of barrenness, and have put on the glad garment of fruitfulness. Let that other Anna, the adversary of Pheninnah, also rejoice with me today, and celebrate with her own example this new and unexpected wonder that has been wrought in me.

Let us ourselves also, who was once called barren but who have now become mother of the virginal bridal chamber, offer in harmony with these words our praise. Let us say to her with Scripture: How blessed is the house of David, from which you came forth, and the womb in which God fashioned the ark of sanctification, that is, her from whom he was conceived without seed.

That the destruction of Jerusalem — which was carried out by Vespasian and Titus, the Roman princes — is described by the weeping Lord, no one who has read the history of that overthrow is unaware. For the Roman princes are foretold when it is said: For the days will come upon you, and your enemies will encircle you with a palisade. This also which is added: They will not leave stone upon stone within you — even the very exile of that city now testifies to it; for since it has now been built up in the place where the Lord was crucified outside the gate, that former Jerusalem, as it is said, was razed to the foundations.
