1 Et duxit me ad portam, quæ respiciébat ad viam Orientalem,
2 et ecce glória Dei Israël ingrediebátur per viam Orientalem, et vox erat ei quasi vox aquárum multárum, et terra splendébat a maiestate eius.
3 Et vidi visiónem secúndum spéciem quam víderam, quando venit ut dispérderet civitátem, et spécies secúndum aspéctum quem videram iuxta fluvium Chobar, et cécidi super fáciem meam.
4 Et máiestas Dómini ingréssa est templum per viam portæ, quæ respiciébat ad Oriéntem;
5 et elevávit me spíritus et introduxit me in atrium interius, et ecce repléta erat glória Dómini domus.

1 And he led me to the gate which looked toward the way of the east.
2 And behold, the glory of the God of Israel entered along the way of the east. And his voice was like the voice of many waters. And the earth was resplendent before his majesty.
3 And I saw a vision in accord with the form that I had seen when he arrived so that he might destroy the city. And the form was in accord with the sight that I had seen beside the river Chebar. And I fell upon my face.
4 And the majesty of the Lord advanced into the temple, along the way of the gate which looked toward the east.
5 And the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court. And behold, the house was filled with the glory of the Lord.

℟ Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen;

7 said to me: 'Son of man, the place of my throne, and the place of the steps of my feet, is where I live: in the midst of the sons of Israel forever. And the house of Israel, they and their kings, shall no longer defile my holy name by their fornications, and by the ruinous ways of their kings, and by exalted places.
8 They have fabricated their threshold beside my threshold, and their doorposts beside my doorposts. And there was a wall between me and them. And they defiled my holy name by the abominations which they committed. Because of this, I consumed them in my wrath.'

Reveal to them the form and the fabrication of the house, its exits and entrances, and its entire description, and all of its precepts, and its entire order, and all of its laws. And you shall write in their sight, so that they may observe its entire description and its precepts, and so that they may accomplish them.

℟ Sustinúimus pacem, et non venit: quæsívimus bona, et ecce turbátio: cognóvimus, Dómine, peccáta nostra;

℟ We waited for peace, and it did not come; we sought good things, and behold trouble: we acknowledge, O Lord, our sins;

Do not forget us forever.

Gregory, Bishop of Neocaesarea in Pontus, illustrious for holiness and learning, but far more illustrious for signs and miracles — on account of the multitude and excellence of which he was called the Wonderworker, and was compared by the testimony of Saint Basil to Moses, the Prophets, and the Apostles — moved a mountain by prayer that was obstructing the building of a church. Likewise he dried up a swamp that had been a source of discord between brothers. The river Lycus, which was flooding the fields to their ruin, he checked by planting at the bank the staff on which he leaned, which immediately grew into a leafy tree, so that afterwards it never overflowed that boundary.

The Gentiles who have written slanders against the Church are accustomed to reproach our people for not having had perfect faith in God, since they have never been able to move mountains. To whom it must be answered that the things done in the Church have not been written down, just as Scripture also testifies concerning the deeds of Christ and our Lord himself. Hence it could also have come to pass that a mountain be removed from the earth and cast into the sea, if necessity had demanded that this be done — as we read was brought about by the prayers of the blessed Father Gregory, bishop of Neocaesarea in Pontus, a man outstanding in merits and virtues, so that a mountain yielded its place on the earth by just as much as the inhabitants of the city had need.

For when, wishing to build a church in a suitable place, he saw it was too narrow for what the situation required, being cramped on one side by the sea cliff and on the other by a nearby mountain, he came by night to the place and, kneeling down, reminded the Lord of his promise, that he would move the mountain further away according to the faith of him who asked. And when morning came and he returned, he found that the mountain had left the builders of the church as much space as they needed. This man, therefore, could — as could another man of equal merit, if the occasion had required — obtain from the Lord by the merit of faith that even a mountain might be removed and cast into the sea.

But because the name of mountain sometimes signifies the devil, namely on account of the pride by which he raises himself against God and wishes to be like the Most High, the mountain is lifted from the earth and cast into the sea at the command of those who are strong in faith, when, as the holy teachers preach the word, the unclean spirit is driven from the hearts of those who are ordained to life, and is permitted to exercise the frenzy of his tyranny in the turbulent and bitter minds of unbelievers.
