77:21 Therefore, the Lord heard, and he was dismayed: * and a fire was kindled within Jacob, and an anger ascended into Israel.
77:22 For they neither put their trust in God: * nor did they hope in his salvation:
77:23 And he commanded the clouds from above: * and he opened the doors of heaven.
77:24 And he rained down manna upon them to eat: * and he gave them the bread of heaven.
77:25 Man ate the bread of Angels, * he sent them provisions in abundance.
77:26 He transferred the south wind from heaven: * and in his virtue, he brought in the Southwest wind.

1 In the one hundred and fifty-first year, Demetrius, the son of Seleucus, departed from the city of Rome, and he went up with a few men to a maritime city, and he reigned there.
4 And so the army killed them. And Demetrius sat upon the throne of his kingdom.
5 And there came to him iniquitous and impious men from Israel. And Alcimus was their leader, who wanted to be made a priest.
6 And they accused the people to the king, saying: ‘Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends, and he has scattered us from our land.’
7 Now, therefore, send a man, whom you trust, and let him go and see all the destruction he has done to us and to the regions of the king. And let him punish all his friends and their helpers.

9 to see the destruction that Judas had done. Moreover, he appointed the wicked Alcimus to the priesthood, and he commanded him to take revenge on the sons of Israel.
10 And they rose up and came forth with a great army into the land of Judah. And they sent messengers, who spoke to Judas and his brothers with words of peace, in deceitfulness.
11 But they did not heed their words, for they saw that they arrived with a great army.

℟ The nations have gathered in multitude to fight against us, and we do not know what we ought to do:

O Lord God, our eyes are upon you, lest we perish.

℣ You know what they plot against us: how shall we be able to stand before their face, unless you help us?

Edward, surnamed the Confessor, nephew of Saint Edward King and Martyr, the last of the Anglo-Saxon kings — whom the Lord had shown to the most holy man Brithuald in a mental ecstasy as the future king — was sought out for death by the Danes who were ravaging England while he was ten years old, and was compelled to live in exile with his uncle, the Duke of Normandy. There, amid the allurements of vices, he showed himself of such integrity of life and innocence of character that he was the admiration of all. Even then his wonderful piety toward God and holy things shone forth in him, and his nature was most gentle and altogether free from any desire to dominate. This saying is recorded of him: that he would rather be without a kingdom that could not be obtained without slaughter and blood.

The tyrants who had robbed his brothers of their lives and their kingdom being at last destroyed, he is recalled to his homeland. There, amid the greatest desires and rejoicing of all, having come into possession of the kingdom, he turned himself entirely to blotting out the traces of hostile wrath, beginning with sacred things and the temples of the Saints, some of which he raised from their foundations, others he repaired and increased in revenues and privileges; being intent above all on this purpose, that the collapsed religion might revive. Distinguished by the gift of prophecy, he foresaw by divine illumination many things about England's future state; and this above all is memorable: that he understood by divine inspiration, at the very moment it happened, the death of Swein, king of the Danes, drowned in the sea while boarding his fleet with the intention of invading England. He honored John the Evangelist wondrously, being accustomed to refuse nothing to anyone asked in his name. Once, when the saint begged alms from him in tattered garb in his own name and he had no coin, the king drew a ring from his finger and gave it to him; which the saint not long after sent back to Edward, together with a message foretelling his approaching death. Wherefore the king, having appointed prayers for himself, died most piously on the very day foretold by the Evangelist, namely the Nones of January in the year of salvation one thousand and sixty-six. Alexander the Third, Pope, in the following century enrolled him, illustrious in miracles, in the lists of the Saints. Nonne ipse est, qui, fugátis flúctibus, maris profúnda nudávit, ut Israëlíticus pópulus inter stupéntes undas sicco vestígio velut móntium cóncava pertransíret? Nonne hic est, qui Petri pédibus marínos vórtices inclinávit, ut iter líquidum humánis gréssibus sólidum præbéret obséquium.

Today's reading has shown that Christ, in human actions, wrought divine mysteries, and in visible things carried out invisible works. He boarded a boat, it says, and crossed over, and came to his own city. Is this not he who, driving back the waves, laid bare the depths of the sea, so that the Israelite people might pass through the astonished waters dryshod as though through the hollows of mountains? Is this not he who bent the swirling eddies of the sea beneath Peter's feet, so as to provide solid service on the liquid road for human steps?

And why the wonder, brethren? Christ came to take up our weaknesses, and to confer his own virtues upon us; to seek human things, to bestow divine ones; to receive injuries, to render dignities; to bear weariness, to return health: for the physician who does not bear weaknesses does not know how to heal; and the one who has not been made weak with the weak cannot confer health upon the weak.

The Creator of all things, the Lord of the world, after he had, for our sakes, narrowed himself in our flesh, began to have a human fatherland, began to be a citizen of a Jewish city, began to have parents — he who is himself the parent of all parents — so that love might invite, charity attract, affection bind, and humanity persuade those whom dominion had put to flight, whom fear had scattered, whom the force of power had made exiles.
