19 Et respóndit Mathathías et dixit magna voce: Etsi omnes gentes regi Antíocho obédiunt, ut discédat unusquísque a servitúte legis patrum suórum, et conséntiat mandátis eius:
20 ego et fílii mei, et fratres mei, obediémus legi patrum nostrórum.
21 Propítius sit nobis Deus, non est nobis útile relínquere legem et iustítias Dei:
22 non audiémus verba regis Antíochi, nec sacrificábimus transgrediéntes legis nostræ mandáta, ut eámus áltera via.

19 Even if all nations obey king Antiochus, so that each one departs from the service of the law of his fathers and consents to his commandments,
20 I and my sons and my brothers will obey the law of our fathers.
21 May God be forgiving to us. It is not useful for us to abandon the law and the justices of God.
22 We will not listen to the words of king Antiochus, nor will we sacrifice, transgressing the commandments of our law, so as to set out on another way.

Francis, born at Assisi in Umbria, following his father's example, practiced trade from his earliest years. One day, when he had rebuffed a poor man begging money for the love of Christ, contrary to his custom, he was suddenly moved by the act, and lavished mercy upon him abundantly; and from that day he promised God that he would never refuse alms to anyone who asked. When thereafter he fell into a serious illness, and was at some point recovered from it, he began to cultivate the offices of charity more ardently; in which exercise he made such progress that, desiring evangelical perfection, he would distribute whatever he had to the poor. His father, taking this ill, brought him before the Bishop of Assisi, so that he might there renounce his paternal estate; and Francis, setting aside even his clothing, gave up everything to his father, adding that in the future he would have greater freedom to say: Our Father, who art in heaven.

Do you wish to be great? Begin from the least. Are you thinking of building the great structure of loftiness? Think first of the foundation of humility.
