The holy Martyrs Cornelius the Pope and Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, whose memory is kept on the eighteenth day before the Kalends of October.
At Chalcedon, the birth of Saint Euphemia, Virgin and Martyr; who, under the Emperor Diocletian, for the confession of the faith was subjected to various torments, and was finally given to wild beasts and thus completed her martyrdom. Her body, enclosed in a silver vessel, was there kept with great veneration. Afterward, the holy universal Council of Chalcedon was celebrated in her basilica, in which the faith was defined against the Eutychian heresy, and so this holy martyr became, as it were, the guardian of the true faith.
The holy Cornelius the Centurion, who was baptized by the Apostle Peter, as blessed Luke relates in the Acts of the Apostles.
