1 There was a certain man from Ramah of Zophim, on Mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
2 And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the second was Peninnah. And Peninnah had sons. But Hannah did not have children.
3 And this man went up from his city, on the established days, so that he might adore and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh. Now the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests of the Lord, were in that place.

4 Then the day arrived, and Elkanah immolated. And he gave portions to his wife Peninnah, and to all her sons and daughters.
5 But to Hannah he gave one portion with sorrow. For he loved Hannah, but the Lord had closed her womb.
6 And her rival afflicted her and vehemently distressed her, to a great extent, for she rebuked her that the Lord had closed her womb.
7 And she did so every year, when the time returned for them to ascend to the temple of the Lord. And she provoked her in this way. And so, she wept and did not take food.
8 Therefore, her husband Elkanah said to her: 'Hannah, why are you weeping? And why do you not eat? And for what reason do you afflict your heart? Am I not better to you than ten sons?'

℟ Deus ómnium exaudítor est: ipse misit Angelum suum, et tulit me de óvibus patris mei:

℟ God is the hearer of all: he himself sent his Angel, and took me from among the sheep of my father:

11 And she made a vow, saying, 'O Lord of hosts, if, in looking with favor, you will see the affliction of your servant and will remember me, and will not forget your handmaid, and if you will give to your servant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall pass over his head.'

John of Sahagún was born in Spain of noble lineage; his parents, having long been childless, obtained him from God through pious works and prayers. From his earliest years he gave an outstanding token of future holiness: for he would often speak from an elevated place to the other boys, exhorting them to virtue and the worship of God, and settling their quarrels. In his homeland he was entrusted to the monks of Saint Facundus of the Order of Saint Benedict for instruction in the first elements of learning. While he applied himself to these studies, his father arranged for him to administer a parish church; but this office the young man could be induced by no argument to retain. Admitted among the familiars of the Bishop of Burgos, he became the bishop's closest confidant on account of his well-attested integrity, and was ordained priest and canon by him, being enriched with many benefices. But leaving the bishop's household in order to serve God more quietly, he renounced all the revenues of the Church and devoted himself to a small chapel, where he celebrated Mass daily and frequently preached on divine matters to the great edification of his hearers.

Going afterwards to Salamanca for the sake of studies, enrolled in the celebrated college of Saint Bartholomew, he so exercised the priestly office as to pursue his desired studies at the same time and also to be constantly engaged in sacred preaching. When he had fallen into a most grave illness, he bound himself by a vow of stricter discipline; and to fulfill it, having first given to a certain poor man who was nearly naked the better of only two garments he possessed, he betook himself to the monastery of Saint Augustine, then flourishing especially in severe discipline: admitted there, he surpassed his elders in obedience, humility of soul, vigils, and prayer. When the care of the refectory was entrusted to him, a small cask of wine, at his touch, sufficed abundantly for all the monks throughout a year. After the year of novitiate, at the superior's command he undertook the office of preaching. At Salamanca at that time, all things divine and human were so confounded by bloody factions that murders took place at nearly every hour, and not only the streets and squares but even the churches overflowed with the blood of men of every rank, and especially of the nobility.

John, soothing the minds of the citizens by his preaching and by private conversations, reduced the city to tranquility. He deeply offended a local ruler because he had rebuked his cruelty toward his subjects. What Catholic does not know that the Father is truly Father, the Son is truly Son, and the Holy Spirit is truly Holy Spirit? As the Lord himself says to his Apostles: Going, baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This is the perfect Trinity subsisting in unity, which we profess to be of one substance. For we do not, after the manner of bodies, make division in God; but according to the power of the divine nature, which is not in matter, we both believe that the persons of the names truly subsist and testify that the unity of the divinity is one.

We do not say that the Son of God is an extension of one part from another part, as some have supposed; nor do we take the Word as something without substance, like the sound of a voice: but we believe that the three Names and three Persons are of one essence, one majesty, and one power. And therefore we confess one God: because the unity of majesty forbids that those who are many be called gods. In the end we name Father and Son in Catholic usage; but to speak of two Gods we neither can nor ought. Not that the Son of God is not God — he is indeed true God from true God — but because we know the Son of God from no other than from that one Father himself, therefore we say one God. For the Prophets, the Apostles, and the Lord himself taught this, when he says: I and the Father are one. One he refers to the unity of divinity, as I have said; but Are, he assigns to the Persons.
