11 Potes enim cognóscere quia non plus sunt mihi dies quam duódecim, ex quo ascéndi adoráre in Ierúsalem:
12 et neque in templo invenérunt me cum áliquo disputántem, aut concúrsum faciéntem turbæ, neque in synagógis, neque in civitáte:
13 neque probáre possunt tibi de quibus nunc me accúsant.

10 Then, since the governor had motioned for him to speak, Paul responded: 'Knowing that you have been the judge over this nation for many years, I will give an explanation of myself with an honest soul.
11 For, as you may realize, it has only been twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem.
12 And they did not find me in the temple arguing with anyone, nor causing a rally of the people: neither in the synagogues, nor in the city.
13 And they are not able to prove to you the things about which they now accuse me.
14 But I confess this to you, that according to that sect, which they call a heresy, so do I serve my God and Father, believing all that is written in the Law and the Prophets,
15 having a hope in God, which these others themselves also expect, that there will be a future resurrection of the just and the unjust.
16 And in this, I myself always strive to have a conscience that is lacking in any offence toward God and toward men.'

19 But certain Jews out of Asia are the ones who should have appeared before you to accuse me, if they have anything against me.
20 Or let these ones here say if they have found in me any iniquity, while standing before the council.
21 For while standing among them, I spoke out solely about this one matter: about the resurrection of the dead. It is about this that I am being judged today by you.'

22 Then Felix, after having ascertained much knowledge about this Way, kept them waiting, by saying, 'When Lysias the tribune has arrived, I will give you a hearing.'
23 And he ordered a centurion to guard him, and to take rest, and not to prohibit any of his own from ministering to him.
24 Then, after some days, Felix, arriving with his wife Drusilla who was a Jew, called for Paul and listened to him about the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
25 And after he discoursed about justice and chastity, and about the future judgment, Felix was trembling, and he responded: 'For now, go, but remain under guard. Then, at an opportune time, I will summon you.'
26 He was also hoping that money might be given to him by Paul, and because of this, he frequently summoned him and spoke with him.
27 Then, when two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Portius Festus. And since Felix wanted to show particular favor to the Jews, he left Paul behind as a prisoner.

Monica, mother of Saint Augustine in a twofold sense, since she bore him both to the world and to heaven, after the death of her husband — whom, when he was broken by old age, she had won over to Jesus Christ — lived in chaste and pious widowhood, devoted to works of mercy. She followed her son Augustine to Milan, tirelessly interceding with God for his conversion. At last, having obtained what she had sought with so many tears and prayers — for Augustine was converted and baptized by Saint Ambrose — she departed this life at Ostia Tiberina, in the fifty-sixth year of her age, joyfully and with faith, longing for her heavenly homeland, to which she had drawn her heart long before.

At the resurrection of that young man, his widowed mother rejoiced; at the daily raising up of souls in the spirit, Mother Church rejoices. He was dead in body; those others are dead in mind. His visible death was visibly mourned; their invisible death was neither sought out nor seen. He sought them out who knew the dead. He alone knew the dead who was able to make them alive. For if he had not come to raise up the dead, the Apostle would not say: Arise, you who sleep, and rise from the dead, and Christ will enlighten you.

Neque enim tantum miracula propter miracula faciebat; sed ut illa, quæ faciebat, mira essent vidéntibus, vera essent intelligéntibus.

We find three dead persons raised visibly by the Lord, thousands invisibly. But how many he raised visibly, who knows? For not all that he did is written. John said this: Jesus did many other things which, if they were written, I think the whole world could not contain the books. Many others therefore were undoubtedly raised, but these three were not commemorated without purpose. For our Lord Jesus Christ wished that the things he did bodily should also be understood spiritually. For he did not work miracles merely for the sake of miracles; but so that the things he did might be wondrous to those who saw, and true to those who understood.

Ita qui vidérunt Christi miracula, et non intellexérunt quid sibi vellent, et quid intelligéntibus quodámmodo innúerent, miráti sunt tantum quia facta sunt; alii vero et facta mirati, et intellecta assecuti. Tales nos in schola Christi esse debemus.

Just as one who sees letters in a most beautifully written codex, and does not know how to read, praises indeed the hand of the copyist, admiring the beauty of the characters; but what those characters mean, what they indicate, he does not know, and he is a praiser with his eyes but not an understander with his mind. Another, however, both praises the craftsmanship and grasps the meaning: namely, the one who can not only see what is common to all, but also read—which one who has not learned cannot do. So those who saw Christ's miracles, and did not understand what they meant and what they were somehow signaling to those with understanding, marveled only that they were done; but others both marveled at the deeds and attained their understanding. Such must we be in the school of Christ.
