44:14 All the glory of the daughter of the King is inside, * in golden fringes, (15a) clothed all around with diversities.
44:15b After her, virgins will be led to the King: * her neighbors will be brought to you.
44:16 They will be brought with gladness and exultation: * they will be led into the temple of the King.
44:17 For your fathers, sons have been born to you: * you will establish them as leaders over all the earth.

1 Et cum compleréntur dies Pentecóstes, erant omnes páriter in eódem loco:
2 et factus est repénte de cælo sonus, tamquam adveniéntis spíritus veheméntis, et replévit totam domum ubi erant sedéntes.
3 Et apparuérunt illis dispertítæ linguæ tamquam ignis, sedítque supra síngulos eórum:
4 et repléti sunt omnes Spíritu Sancto, et cœpérunt loqui váriis linguis, prout Spíritus Sanctus dabat éloqui illis.
5 Erant autem in Ierúsalem habitántes Iudǽi, viri religiósi ex omni natióne quæ sub cælo est.
6 Facta autem hac voce, convénit multitúdo, et mente confúsa est, quóniam audiébat unusquísque lingua sua illos loquéntes.
7 Stupébant autem omnes, et mirabántur, dicéntes: Nonne ecce omnes isti qui loquúntur, Galilǽi sunt?
8 et quómodo nos audívimus unusquísque linguam nostram in qua nati sumus?

1 And when the days of Pentecost were completed, they were all together in the same place.
2 And suddenly, there came a sound from heaven, like that of a wind approaching violently, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared to them separate tongues, as if of fire, which settled upon each one of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. And they began to speak in various languages, just as the Holy Spirit bestowed eloquence to them.
5 Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, pious men from every nation that is under heaven.
6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together and was confused in mind, because each one was listening to them speaking in his own language.
7 Then all were astonished, and they wondered, saying: 'Behold, are not all of these who are speaking Galileans?
8 And how is it that we have each heard them in our own language, into which we were born?'

15 Non enim, sicut vos æstimátis, hi ébrii sunt, cum sit hora diéi tértia:
16 sed hoc est quod dictum est per prophétam Ioël:
17 Et erit in novíssimis diébus, dicit Dóminus, effúndam de Spíritu meo super omnem carnem: et prophetábunt fílii vestri et fíliæ vestræ, et iúvenes vestri visiónes vidébunt, et senióres vestri sómnia somniábunt.
18 Et quidem super servos meos, et super ancíllas meas, in diébus illis effúndam de Spíritu meo, et prophetábunt:
19 et dabo prodígia in cælo sursum, et signa in terra deórsum, sánguinem, et ignem, et vapórem fumi:
20 sol convertétur in ténebras, et luna in sánguinem, ántequam véniat dies Dómini magnus et maniféstus.

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and he spoke to them: 'Men of Judea, and all those who are staying in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and incline your ears to my words.
15 For these men are not inebriated, as you suppose, for it is the third hour of the day.
16 But this is what was spoken of by the prophet Joel:
17 "And this shall be: in the last days, says the Lord, I will pour out, from my Spirit, upon all flesh. And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. And your youths shall see visions, and your elders shall dream dreams.
18 And certainly, upon my men and women servants in those days, I will pour out from my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will bestow wonders in heaven above, and signs on earth below: blood and fire and the vapor of smoke.
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the great and manifest day of the Lord arrives.
21 And this shall be: whoever shall invoke the name of the Lord will be saved."'

℟ Rising, our Lord Jesus, standing in the midst of his disciples, said:

Quod cum Petrus audísset, et probávit, et Ecclésiæ legéndum sua auctoritáte dedit. Assúmpto ítaque Evangélio quod ipse confécerat, perréxit in Ægýptum, et primus Alexandríæ Christum annúntians, constítuit ecclésiam tanta doctrína et vitæ continéntia, ut omnes sectatóres Christi ad exémplum sui cógeret.

Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, according to what he had heard Peter recounting, wrote at the request of the brethren at Rome a brief Gospel. When Peter heard of it, he approved it and gave it to the Church to be read by his authority. Mark then, taking up the Gospel he had himself composed, went to Egypt, and preaching Christ first at Alexandria, established a Church of such doctrine and sobriety of life that he constrained all the followers of Christ to follow his example.

Finally, Philo, the most eloquent of the Jews, seeing at Alexandria the first church still judaizing, wrote a book on their manner of life in praise, as it were, of his own people. And as Luke narrates that those who believed in Jerusalem had all things in common, so he too committed to memory what he saw being done at Alexandria under the teacher Mark. He died in the eighth year of Nero, and was buried at Alexandria, with Anianus succeeding him.

Sancta quátuor animália, quæ prophetíæ spíritu futúra prævidéntur, subtíli narratióne describúntur, cum dícitur: Quátuor fácies uni, et quátuor pennæ uni. Quid per fáciem, nisi notítia; et quid per pennas, nisi volátus exprímitur? Per fáciem quippe unusquísque cognóscitur: per pennas vero in altum ávium córpora sublevántur. Fácies ítaque ad fidem pértinet, penna ad contemplatiónem. Per fidem namque ab omnipoténti Deo cognóscimur, sicut ipse de suis óvibus dicit: Ego sum pastor bonus, et cognósco oves meas, et cognóscunt me meæ. Qui rursus ait: Ego scio quos elégerim. The four holy living creatures, which are foreseen by the spirit of prophecy as future realities, are described with subtle narration, when it is said: Four faces to each one, and four wings to each one. What is expressed by the face, but knowledge; and what by the wings, but flight? For by the face each one is recognized; by the wings, the bodies of birds are lifted into the heights. The face, therefore, pertains to faith, the wing to contemplation. For by faith we are known to almighty God, as he himself says of his sheep: I am the good shepherd, and I know my sheep, and my sheep know me. Who says again: I know those whom I have chosen. By contemplation, however, by which we are lifted above ourselves, we are raised as it were into the air.

Sed sciéndum nobis est, quod divína operátio, si ratióne comprehénditur, non est admirábilis: nec fides habet méritum, cui humána rátio præbet experiméntum. Sed hæc ipsa nostri Redemptóris ópera, quæ ex semetípsis comprehéndi nequáquam possunt, ex ália eius operatióne pensánda sunt: ut rebus mirabílibus fidem prǽbeant facta mirabilióra. Illud enim corpus Dómini intrávit ad discípulos iánuis clausis, quod vidélicet ad humános óculos per nativitátem suam clauso exívit útero Vírginis. Quid ergo mirum, si clausis iánuis post resurrectiónem suam in ætérnum iam victúrus intrávit, qui moritúrus véniens, non apérto útero Vírginis exívit?

The first question of this Gospel reading strikes the mind: how after the Resurrection was the Lord's body truly a real body, if it was able to enter through closed doors to the disciples? But we must understand that a divine work, if it is grasped by reason, is not admirable; nor does faith have merit when human reason provides the proof. But these very works of our Redeemer, which can in no way be comprehended by themselves, must be weighed against another of his works, so that more wonderful deeds may lend credence to the wondrous things. For that same body of the Lord entered through closed doors to the disciples, which had visibly departed, to human eyes, through the closed womb of the Virgin at his birth. What wonder is it, then, if through closed doors after his Resurrection he entered — he who was henceforth to live forever — who, when coming to die, had gone forth without opening the womb of the Virgin?

Qua in re duo mira, et iuxta humánam ratiónem sibi valde contrária osténdit: dum post resurrectiónem suam corpus suum incorruptíbile, et tamen palpábile demonstrávit. Nam et corrúmpi necésse est quod palpátur: et palpári non potest quod non corrúmpitur. Sed miro modo atque inæstimábili Redémptor noster et incorruptíbile post resurrectiónem, et palpábile corpus exhíbuit: ut monstrándo incorruptíbile, invitáret ad prǽmium, et præbéndo palpábile, firmáret ad fidem. Et incorruptíbilem se ergo, et palpábilem demonstrávit: ut profécto esse post resurrectiónem osténderet corpus suum et eiúsdem natúræ, et altérius glóriæ.

But because faith doubted concerning that body which could be seen, he showed them at once his hands and side, offered the flesh to be touched, which he had brought in through closed doors. In this he showed two marvels, very contrary to each other according to human reason: for after his Resurrection he showed his body to be incorruptible, and yet palpable. For that which is touched is necessarily subject to corruption: and that which is not subject to corruption cannot be touched. But in a wonderful and inestimable manner our Redeemer after the Resurrection showed his body both incorruptible and palpable: that by showing it incorruptible, he might invite to the reward, and by offering it palpable, he might strengthen faith. He showed himself, therefore, both incorruptible and palpable: so as manifestly to show that after the Resurrection his body was of the same nature and yet of a different glory.
