At Canterbury, in England, Saint Anselm, Bishop, Confessor, and Doctor of the Church, conspicuous for holiness and learning.
In Persia, the birth into heaven of Saint Simeon, Bishop of Seleucia and Ctesiphon, who, at the command of the Persian King Sapor, was arrested, laden with chains, and brought before unjust tribunals; and when he refused to worship the sun and bore witness to Jesus Christ with a free and most steadfast voice, he was first worn down for a long time in a prison cell together with a hundred others—of whom some were Bishops, some Priests, some Clerics of various orders. Then, when Usthazanes, the king's foster-father, who had previously fallen from the faith but had been recalled to repentance by him, had steadfastly undergone martyrdom, on the following day—which was the annual day of the Lord's Passion—all were beheaded before Simeon's eyes, each of whom he vigorously exhorted; and last of all he himself was beheaded. The most distinguished men Abdechalas and Ananias, who were his Priests, also suffered with him. Pusicus, too, the Superintendent of the King's craftsmen, because he had strengthened the wavering Ananias, was put to a cruel death by having his neck pierced through the tendon and his tongue pulled out through it; and after him his daughter also, a sacred Virgin, was afflicted with many dreadful torments and at last beheaded with a sword.
