Hymnus
Bella dum late fúrerent, et urbes
Cæde fratérna gémerent cruéntæ,
Adfuit Virgo, nova semper edens
Múnera matris.
En vocat septem fámulos, fidéles
Ut sibi in luctu récolant dolóres,
Quos tulit Iesus, tulit ipsa consors
Sub cruce Nati.
Illico parent Dóminæ vocánti:
Spléndidis tectis opibúsque spretis,
Urbe secédunt procul in Senári
Abdita montis.
Córpora hic pœnis crúciant acérbis,
Sóntium labes hóminum piántes:
Hic prece avértunt lacrimísque fusis
Núminis iram.
Pérdolens Mater fovet, atque amíctum
Ipsa lugúbrem monet induéndum:
Agminis sancti pia cœpta surgunt,
Mira patéscunt.
Palmes in bruma víridans honóres
Núntiat patrum: próprios Maríæ
Ore lacténti vócitant puélli
Nómine servos.
Sit decus Patri, genitǽque Proli,
Et tibi, compar utriúsque virtus
Spíritus semper, Deus unus omni
Témporis ævo.
Amen.
When war was raging, and the town
Was red with blood of brother bands,
Our Virgin Mother bowed her down
With bounteous hands.
Seven faithful sons she bid to share
Her dolours, all the shame and loss,
Which Jesus suffered and she bare
Beneath His Cross.
Soon as their Lady called, as nought
They deemed their palaces and wealth,
The mountains, desert places, sought
Far off, by stealth.
For others' sins the scourge they plied
As they the way of penance trod,
By prayers and tears they turned aside
The wrath of God.
Token of love the Mother's hand
Gave to her sons their garb of woe,
Sanctioned the pious work they planned
With wondrous show.
The vine to spread their honours wide
Her shoots in winter greenly flung;
See, those are Mary's servants, cried
The infant tongue.
Now to the Father thanks and praise;
To Thee, O Son, the same we send;
To Thee, O Spirit, through all days,
World without end.
Amen.

104:6 You offspring of Abraham his servant: * you sons of Jacob, his elect.
104:7 He is the Lord our God: * his judgments are throughout the entire earth.
104:8 He has remembered his covenant for all ages: * the word that he entrusted to a thousand generations,
104:9 which he assigned to Abraham: * and his oath to Isaac:
104:10 And he stationed the same for Jacob with a precept: * and for Israel with an eternal testament:
104:11 saying: To you I will give the land of Canaan, * the allotment of your inheritance.
104:12 Though they may have been but a small number, * very few, and foreigners there:
104:13 and though they passed from nation to nation, * and from one kingdom to another people.

104:42 For he had called to mind his holy word: * which he kept near to his servant Abraham.
104:43 And he led forth his people in exultation, * and his elect in rejoicing.

Phlm 1:7-11
Phlm 1:7-11
7 For I have found great joy and consolation in your charity, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother.
8 Because of this, I have enough confidence in Christ Jesus to command you concerning certain things,
9 but I beg you instead, for the sake of charity, since you are so much like Paul: an old man and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
10 I beg you, on behalf of my son, whom I have begotten in my chains, Onesimus,
11 who was useless to you in times past, but now is useful both to me and to you,
℟ O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you:
Quia non spernis, Deus, preces páuperum.
For you do not spurn, O God, the prayers of the poor.
℣ Fiant aures tuæ intendéntes in oratiónem servi tui.
℣ Let your ears be attentive to the prayer of your servant.
℟ Quia non spernis, Deus, preces páuperum.
℟ For you do not spurn, O God, the prayers of the poor.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ad gáudia paradísi perdúcat nos misericórdia Christi.
Benedictio. May the mercy of Christ lead us to the joys of paradise.

Phlm 1:12-19
Phlm 1:12-19
17 Si ergo habes me sócium, súscipe illum sicut me:
19 Ego Paulus scripsi mea manu.
12 So I have sent him back to you. And may you receive him like my own heart.
13 I myself wanted to retain him with me, so that he might minister to me, on your behalf, while I am in the chains of the Gospel.
14 But I was willing to do nothing without your counsel, so as not to make use of your good deed as if out of necessity, but only willingly.
15 So perhaps, then, he departed from you for a time, so that you might receive him again for eternity,
16 no longer as a servant, but, in place of a servant, a most beloved brother, especially to me: but how much so more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord!
17 Therefore, if you hold me to be a companion, receive him as you would me.
18 But if he has harmed you in any way, or if he is in your debt, charge it to me.
19 I, Paul, have written this with my own hand.
℟ Velóciter exáudi me, Deus,
℟ Hear me speedily, O God,
For my days have failed like smoke:
But you are the same, and your years will not fail.
℣ Dies mei sicut umbra declinavérunt, et ego sicut fœnum árui.
℣ My days have declined like a shadow, and I have withered like grass.
℟ Quia defecérunt sicut fumus dies mei.
℟ For my days have failed like smoke.
℣ Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℣ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
℟ Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
℟ As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
℟ But you are the same, and your years will not fail.

105:5 so that we may see the goodness of your elect, so that we may rejoice in the joy of your nation: * so that you may be praised along with your inheritance.
105:6 We have sinned, as have our fathers: * we have acted unjustly; we have wrought iniquity.
105:7 Our fathers did not understand your miracles in Egypt: * they did not remember the multitude of your mercies.
105:7 And they provoked you, while going up to the sea, * the Red Sea.
105:8 And he saved them for the sake of his name: * so that he might make known his power.
105:9 And he rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up, * and he led them into the abyss, as if into a desert.
105:10 And he saved them from the hand of those who hated them: * and he redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
105:11 And the water covered those who troubled them: * not one of them remained.
105:12 And they believed his words: * and they sang his praises.
105:13 As soon as they had finished, they forgot his works: * and they would not endure his counsel.
105:14 And they coveted their desire in the desert: * and they tempted God in a waterless place.
105:15 And he granted to them their request: * and he sent abundance into their souls.

105:23 And he said that he would destroy them: * yet Moses, his elect, stood firm before him in the breach,

In the thirteenth century, when the more cultivated peoples of Italy were being torn apart by the dreadful schism of Frederick II and by bloody factions, the provident mercy of God raised up, besides others illustrious for holiness, seven men from the Florentine nobility who, united in charity, might offer a splendid example of fraternal love. These, namely Bonfilius Monaldus, Bonagiunta Manettus, Manettus Antellensis, Amadeus de Amideis, Uguccio degli Uguccioni, Sosteneius de Sosteniis, and Alexis Falconieri, were each visited by an apparition of the Mother of God and admonished to embrace a holier and more perfect manner of life, while they were praying more fervently at a certain assembly of devout men called the Laudesi, on the feast day sacred to the Virgin assumed into heaven, in the thirty-third year of that century. And so, having first conferred with the bishop of Florence, these seven men, putting aside the nobility of their birth and their wealth, clothed in a coarse and worn haircloth garment, withdrew on the eighth of September to a certain rustic chapel, that on that day they might begin the first steps of a holier life, the very day on which the Mother of God herself, born of mortal parents, had begun her most holy life.

God showed by a miracle how acceptable to him was this manner of life. For when shortly thereafter these seven men were going from door to door through the city of Florence begging alms, it came to pass that suddenly by the voice of infants — among whom was Saint Philip Benizi, who had scarcely entered the fifth month of his age — they were acclaimed Servants of Blessed Mary: by which name they were thereafter always called. Therefore, led by love of solitude and the desire to avoid the gatherings of the people, they all assembled in the secluded heights of Monte Senario, and there undertook a certain heavenly manner of life. They lived in caves, content with water alone and herbs; they wore down their bodies with vigils and other austerities, meditating continually on the Passion of Christ and the sorrows of his most sorrowful Mother. When they were once observing this more earnestly on the sacred day of Good Friday, the Blessed Virgin herself appeared to them again, showed them a mournful garment to wear, and signified that it would be most pleasing to her if they were to establish a new religious order in the Church that would perpetually recall and promote the memory of the sorrows she had endured beneath the Cross of the Lord. When Saint Peter, the illustrious Martyr of the Order of Preachers, had learned this from his familiar association with those holy men and also from a special vision of the Mother of God, he urged them to establish a religious order under the name of Servants of the Blessed Virgin: which was afterward approved by Pope Innocent IV.
℟ Díligam te, Dómine, virtus mea: Dóminus firmaméntum meum,

Et refúgium meum.
And my refuge.
℣ Liberátor meus, Deus meus, adiútor meus.
℣ My deliverer, my God, my helper.
℟ Et refúgium meum.
℟ And my refuge.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.
Benedictio. May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts.

Furthermore, when those holy men had joined to themselves more companions, they began to travel through the cities and towns of Italy, especially of Etruria, preaching Christ crucified everywhere, restraining civil discords, and calling back almost countless straying souls to the path of virtue. Nor did they cultivate Italy alone, but also Gaul, Germany, and Poland with their evangelical labors. Finally, when they had spread the good fragrance of Christ far and wide, distinguished also by the glory of miracles, they passed to the Lord. But those whom one love of true brotherhood and religion had united in life, a single tomb covered alike after death, and the veneration of the people followed them together. Wherefore Popes Clement the Eleventh and Benedict the Thirteenth confirmed the undivided cult rendered to them by many generations; and Leo the Thirteenth, after previously approving their miracles, and after the veneration granted for miracles wrought by God in response to their collective invocation, crowned them with the honors of the Saints in the fiftieth year of his priesthood, and ordained that their memory be commemorated each year throughout the whole Church with Office and Mass.

Matt 19:27-29
In illo témpore: Dixit Petrus ad Iesum: Ecce nos relíquimus ómnia, et secúti sumus te: quid ergo erit nobis? Et réliqua.
Homilía sancti Hierónymi Presbýteri.
At that time: Peter said to Jesus: Behold, we have left behind all things, and we have followed you. So then, what will be for us? And so forth.
A Homily of Saint Jerome the Priest.
Lib. 3. in Matth. cap. 19.
Lib. 3. in Matth. cap. 19.
Great confidence! Peter was a fisherman; he had not been wealthy; he earned his food by hand and by craft. And yet he speaks with confidence: We have left behind all things. And because it is not enough merely to leave things behind, he adds what is perfect: And we have followed you. We have done what you commanded; what reward, then, will you give us? But Jesus said to them: Amen I say to you, that you who have followed me, at the resurrection, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, shall also sit on twelve seats, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. He did not say: Who have left behind all things — for the philosopher Crates also did this, and many others despised riches; but: Who have followed me — which belongs properly to the Apostles and to believers.
℟ Ad te, Dómine, levávi ánimam meam:
℟ To you, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul:
Deus meus, in te confído, non erubéscam.
O my God, in you I trust, let me not be put to shame.
℣ Custódi ánimam meam, et éripe me.
℣ Guard my soul, and deliver me.
℟ Deus meus, in te confído, non erubéscam.
℟ O my God, in you I trust, let me not be put to shame.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

At the regeneration, when the Son of Man shall sit upon the throne of his majesty — when even the dead shall rise incorruptible from corruption — you also shall sit upon twelve thrones judging, and you shall condemn the twelve tribes of Israel: because while you believed, they refused to believe. And everyone who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields for my name's sake shall receive a hundredfold and shall possess eternal life. This passage accords with that saying in which the Saviour speaks: "I have not come to send peace, but a sword. For I have come to separate a man from his father, and a daughter from her mother, and a daughter-in-law from her mother-in-law: and a man's enemies shall be those of his own household." Those, therefore, who for the faith of Christ and the preaching of the Gospel have despised all affections, and riches, and the pleasures of the world, shall receive a hundredfold and shall possess eternal life.
℟ Duo Séraphim clamábant alter ad álterum:
℟ Two Seraphim cried out one to the other:
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts: * all the earth is filled with his glory.
℣ For there are Three who give testimony in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. And these Three are One.
℟ Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dóminus Deus Sábaoth.
℟ Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts.
Amen.
℟ Plena est omnis terra glória eius.
℟ All the earth is filled with his glory.
℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

On the occasion of this passage, certain people introduce the thousand years after the Resurrection, saying that then the hundredfold of all the things we have left behind, along with eternal life, is to be rendered to us: not understanding that, if the reward were fitting in the other cases, in the matter of wives it would appear unseemly — that he who has left one wife for the Lord's sake should receive a hundred in the future. The meaning, therefore, is this: he who has left carnal things for the Saviour's sake shall receive spiritual ones: which, by comparison and by their own worth, will be as if a hundredfold number were compared with a small number.
