Reading 4

John Leonardi, born of devout and upright parents in the town of Decimo not far from the city of Lucca, showed from his earliest years, through his love of solitude and prayer, a certain gravity and maturity. Called by God at the age of twenty-six to enroll in the ranks of the Church's service, he at once sent worldly cares their dismissal. He was first instructed among boys in the rudiments of the Latin tongue, and then made such progress in letters and in philosophical and theological disciplines that in barely four years he was promoted to the priesthood out of obedience. Soon having gathered some well-disposed young nobles and having diligently trained them in the perfection of virtue, in the following year he founded a Congregation of Regular Clerks which he named after the Mother of God, out of the ardent affection of his devotion to her. Through their care and zeal, such a transformation of souls was accomplished that, where in the republic of Lucca — especially through the perfidious arts of heretics — the hatreds of citizens were ablaze and morals were debased, in a short time the ancient piety of Christians seemed to have revived there.

On account of such salutary works, John fell into the most fierce persecution of wicked men, who made every effort to destroy the family he had recently gathered together. But the man of God, bearing all things gladly with equanimity of mind, having obtained from the Supreme Pontiff Gregory XIII the confirmation of his congregation, steadfastly preserved the fruits of his apostolic labor. Many bishops made use of him as counselor and helper in settling difficult affairs, and even the Roman Pontiff himself delegated him to resolve intricate disputes and to reform religious communities. He was at hand to assist Saint Joseph Calasanz and his nearly ruined society. He also devoted no small effort to the affairs of the hospital of the Holy Spirit in Sassia, and to the formation of the Oblate nuns of Saint Frances of Rome.

Grieving deeply that so very many peoples in remote regions were without the light of the Gospel, he was inflamed with the desire to go to those shores and pour forth the light of the true religion. But when he had learned from Saint Philip Neri, by whom he was called a true reformer, that he and his congregation were destined for the instruction of the peoples of Italy, he acquiesced in the divine will; yet he did not altogether refrain from attempting whether he might be able to bring some help to unbelievers. Hence, having taken counsel with the most devout bishop Vives, he established a group of priests whose purpose it would be to form suitable young men to be sent in turn to distant regions for the propagation of the faith. Wherefore he is rightly considered the founder of that most distinguished institute which, enlarged by the work of the Supreme Pontiffs, has served marvelously for the spreading of the Catholic faith throughout the entire world. He wrote several works on sacred and moral subjects, most suited to every condition of people. At last, never failing in his sacred ministry, he departed to the Lord in ashes and sackcloth at Rome, on the ninth day of October in the year 1609, in his sixty-sixth year of age. Pope Pius IX, Supreme Pontiff, enrolled him, illustrious in holiness and miracles, in the roll of the Blessed.

For no one is said properly to have charity toward himself alone: but love reaches out to another, so that it may be charity.
