19 Et respóndit Mathathías et dixit magna voce: Etsi omnes gentes regi Antíocho obédiunt, ut discédat unusquísque a servitúte legis patrum suórum, et conséntiat mandátis eius:
20 ego et fílii mei, et fratres mei, obediémus legi patrum nostrórum.
21 Propítius sit nobis Deus, non est nobis útile relínquere legem et iustítias Dei:
22 non audiémus verba regis Antíochi, nec sacrificábimus transgrediéntes legis nostræ mandáta, ut eámus áltera via.

19 Even if all nations obey king Antiochus, so that each one departs from the service of the law of his fathers and consents to his commandments,
20 I and my sons and my brothers will obey the law of our fathers.
21 May God be forgiving to us. It is not useful for us to abandon the law and the justices of God.
22 We will not listen to the words of king Antiochus, nor will we sacrifice, transgressing the commandments of our law, so as to set out on another way.

Bruno, founder of the Carthusian religious order, was born at Cologne. From his very cradle he showed a foretaste of his future holiness; and, by the favor of divine grace declining the ways of childhood for that age of his, so excellent was he in gravity of morals that he was already recognized as a future father of monks and restorer of the anchoritic life. Sent by his parents, who were distinguished in birth and virtue, to Paris, he made such progress in the studies of philosophy and theology that he obtained the title of Doctor and Master in both faculties; and not long after, by reason of his outstanding virtues, he obtained a canonry of the church of Reims.

After several years had passed, renouncing the world together with six other companions, he approached Saint Hugh, Bishop of Grenoble. Having learned the cause of their coming, and understanding them to be the same men whom he had seen the same night in a dream as seven stars falling at his feet, he granted them the most rugged mountains of his diocese, called the Chartreuse. Thither Bruno withdrew with his companions, Hugh himself accompanying them; and after he had lived the eremitic life for some years, he was summoned to Rome by Urban the Second, who had been a disciple of Bruno himself. The Pope made use of his counsel and learning amid so many calamities of the Church for several years, until Bruno, refusing the archbishopric of Reggio, obtained leave to depart.

Nor was this generosity without reward; for when the same Roger was besieging Capua, and a certain Sergius, commander of the watch, had resolved to betray him, Bruno — still living in the said wilderness — revealed everything to the Count in a dream and freed him from the imminent danger. Finally, full of virtues and merits, renowned no less for holiness than for the fame of his learning, he fell asleep in the Lord; and was buried in the monastery of Saint Stephen, built by Roger himself, where he is honorably venerated to this day.

There is, however, one thing that I see must be asked about its exposition: why did the man who had come to seek healing for his son hear the words: Unless you see signs and wonders, you do not believe? For one who was seeking healing for his son was, without doubt, a believer; for he would not have sought healing from one whom he did not believe to be the Savior. Why then is it said: Unless you see signs and wonders, you do not believe — to one who had already believed before he saw any signs?

Sed mementóte quid pétiit; et apérte cognoscétis, quia in fide dubitávit. Popóscit namque, ut descénderet et sanáret fílium eius. Corporálem ergo præséntiam Dómini quærébat, qui per spíritum nusquam déerat. Minus ítaque in illum crédidit, quem non putávit posse salútem dare, nisi præsens esset et córpore. Si enim perfécte credidísset, proculdúbio sciret, quia non esset locus ubi non esset Deus.

But remember what he asked; and you will clearly understand that he doubted in faith. For he asked that he would come down and heal his son. He therefore sought the bodily presence of the Lord, who was nowhere absent in spirit. He believed less in him, therefore, since he did not think he could grant salvation unless he were bodily present. For if he had believed perfectly, he would without doubt have known that there was no place where God was not.

℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Ex magna ergo parte diffísus est, qui virtútem non dedit maiestáti, sed præséntiæ corporáli. Salútem ítaque fílio pétiit, et tamen in fide dubitávit; quia eum ad quem vénerat, et poténtem ad curándum crédidit, et tamen moriénti fílio esse abséntem putávit. Sed Dóminus, qui rogátur ut vadat, quia non desit ubi invitátur, índicat: solo iussu salútem réddidit, qui voluntáte ómnia creávit.

From the greater part, therefore, he was lacking in faith, who attributed the power not to the majesty of God, but to his bodily presence. He sought health for his son, and yet he wavered in faith; for he believed that he who had come to him was powerful to heal, and yet thought that he was absent to his dying son. But the Lord, who is asked to go because he is not absent where he is invited, makes this known: by his word alone he restored health, he who by his will created all things.
