The Fifteenth of September

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross, when the Emperor Heraclius, having conquered king Chosroes, brought it back from Persia to Jerusalem.
At Rome, on the Appian Way, Blessed Cornelius, Pope and Martyr; who, in the persecution of Decius, after the sentence of exile, was ordered to be beaten with leaded whips and thus, with twenty-one others of both sexes, to be beheaded. The soldier Caerealis also, with his wife Sallustia, whom the same Cornelius had instructed in the faith, were beheaded on the same day.
In Africa, the passion of Saint Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, most illustrious for holiness and learning; who, under the Emperors Valerian and Gallienus, after a hard exile, completed his martyrdom by beheading, six miles from Carthage, near the sea. The memory of these same Saints Cornelius and Cyprian is solemnly celebrated on the sixteenth of September.
Near Comana in Pontus, the birthday of Saint John, Bishop of Constantinople, Confessor and Doctor of the Church, surnamed Chrysostom for his golden stream of eloquence; who, cast into exile by the faction of his enemies and, as he was being recalled thence by the decree of the holy Innocent I, Supreme Pontiff, suffering much evil on the road at the hands of the soldiers guarding him, gave his soul to God. His feast is celebrated on the twenty-seventh of January, the day on which his sacred body was translated to Constantinople by the younger Theodosius. This most distinguished herald of the divine word, Pope Pius X declared and appointed the heavenly Patron of sacred Orators.
At Trier, Saint Maternus the Bishop, who was a disciple of the blessed Apostle Peter; and brought the people of Tongeren, Cologne, Trier, and other neighboring peoples to the faith of Christ.
At Rome, Saint Crescentius the boy, who was the son of Saint Euthymius; and, in the persecution of Diocletian, under the judge Turpilius, on the Salarian Way, was struck by the sword and perished.
