1 Noli fácere mala, et non te apprehéndent:

3 Fili, non sémines mala in sulcis iniustítiæ et non metes ea in séptuplum.
4 Noli quǽrere a dómino ducátum, neque a rege cáthedram honóris.
5 Non te iustífices ante Deum, quóniam ágnitor cordis ipse est: et penes regem noli velle vidéri sápiens.

1 Do not choose to do evil, and evil will not take hold of you.
2 Withdraw from the iniquitous, and evil will withdraw from you.
3 Son, do not sow evil in the furrows of injustice, and you will not reap them sevenfold.
4 Do not seek a role of leadership from the Lord, and do not seek a seat of honor from the king.
5 You should not justify yourself before God, for he is the Knower of hearts. And by no means should you wish to seem wise before the king.

14 Do not be willing to devise a lie of any kind. For the practice of lying is not good.

The first flower of sanctity in South America, the virgin Rose, born of Christian parents at Lima, gave evidence from the very cradle of her future holiness. For the face of the infant, transformed miraculously into the likeness of a rose, gave occasion for this name; to which the Virgin Mother of God afterwards added a surname, commanding her henceforth to be called Rose of Saint Mary. At the age of five she made a vow of perpetual virginity. When she was older, lest she be forced by her parents into marriage, she secretly cut off her own most beautiful head of hair. Dedicated to fasts beyond human measure, she passed entire Lents abstaining from bread, and living daily on only five kernels of citron.

She fashioned her bed of knotted logs, filling the empty joints with fragments of pottery. The widowed mother rejoiced over that young man restored to life; the mother Church rejoices over men daily raised up in spirit. That one indeed was dead in body; these were dead in mind. His visible death was visibly mourned; their invisible death was neither sought out nor seen. He who knew the dead sought them out. He alone knew the dead, who was able to make them living. For unless he had come to raise up the dead, the Apostle would not say: Arise, you who sleep, and rise up from the dead, and Christ will enlighten you.

Tres autem mórtuos invenímus a Dómino resuscitátos visibíliter, míllia invisibíliter. Quot autem mórtuos visibíliter suscitáverit, quis novit? Non enim ómnia, quæ fecit, scripta sunt. Ioánnes hoc dixit: Multa ália fecit Iesus, quæ si scripta essent, árbitror totum mundum non posse libros cápere. Multi ergo sunt álii sine dúbio suscitáti, sed non tres frustra commemoráti. Dóminus enim noster Iesus Christus ea quæ faciébat corporáliter, étiam spiritáliter volébat intélligi. Neque enim tantum mirácula propter mirácula faciébat; sed ut illa, quæ faciébat, mira essent vidéntibus, vera essent intelligéntibus.

We find three dead persons visibly raised by the Lord, thousands invisibly. But how many he raised visibly, who knows? For not all that he did is written. John said this: Jesus performed many other things as well, which, if they were written down, I think the whole world could not contain the books. Many others, therefore, were without doubt raised, but these three are not recalled in vain. For our Lord Jesus Christ willed that what he did bodily should also be understood spiritually. Nor did he perform miracles merely for the sake of miracles; but that those things which he did might be wondrous to those who saw, and true to those who understood.

Just as one who sees letters in an excellently written book and does not know how to read praises the hand of the scribe, admiring the beauty of the characters, but does not know what those characters mean or indicate — and is a praiser with his eyes, but no knower with his mind. But another both praises the craftsmanship and grasps the meaning: that man, namely, who can not only see, which is common to all, but also read — which one who has not learned cannot do. So those who saw the miracles of Christ and did not understand what they meant and what they were, as it were, intimating to those who understood, only marveled that they were done; but others both marveled at what was done and attained to what was understood. Such must we be in the school of Christ.
