Sap 6:1-5

1 Mélior est sapiéntia quam vires, et vir prudens quam fortis.
2 Audíte ergo, reges, et intellégite; díscite, iúdices fínium terræ;
3 præbéte aures, vos qui continétis multitúdines et placétis vobis in turbis natiónum;
4 quóniam data est a Dómino potéstas vobis, et virtus ab Altíssimo, qui interrogábit ópera vestra et cogitatiónes scrutábitur;
5 quóniam, cum essétis minístri regni illíus, non recte iudicástis nec custodístis legem iustítiæ neque secúndum voluntátem Dei ambulástis.

1 Wisdom is better than power, and a prudent man is better than a powerful one.
2 Therefore, hear, O kings, and understand; learn, you judges of the ends of the earth.
3 Listen closely, you who hold the attention of the crowds, and who please yourselves by disturbing the nations.
4 For power has been given to you from the Lord and strength from the Most High, who will examine your works and scrutinize your thoughts.
5 For, when you were ministers of his kingdom, you did not judge correctly, nor keep the law of justice, nor walk according to the will of God.

℟ Præbe, fili, cor mihi, et óculi tui vias meas custódiant:

℟ Give me your heart, my son, and let your eyes keep my ways:

9 fortióribus autem fórtior instat cruciátio.

6 Horribly and quickly he will appear to you, because he will make a severe judgment for those who are in charge.
7 For, to the little, great mercy is granted, but the powerful will endure powerful torment.
8 For the Lord will not exempt anyone's character, nor will he stand in awe of anyone's greatness, because he himself made the little and the great, and he is equally concerned for everyone.
9 But a powerful torture pursues the powerful.

℟ The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom:

Intelléctus bonus ómnibus faciéntibus eum: laudátio eius manet in sǽculum sǽculi.

Good understanding to all who do it: his praise endures for ever and ever.

℣ The love of him is the keeping of his laws: for all wisdom is the fear of the Lord.

12 Therefore, desire my words, love them, and you will have instruction.
13 Wisdom is pure and never fades away, and is easily seen by those who love her and found by those who seek her.

36:4 Delight in the Lord: * and he will grant to you the petitions of your heart.
36:5 Reveal your way to the Lord, and hope in him: * and he will accomplish it.
36:6 And he will bring forth your justice like the light, and your judgment like the midday: * be subject to the Lord and pray to him.
36:7 Do not choose to compete with him who prospers in his way: * with the man who does injustices.
36:8 Cease from wrath and leave behind rage: * do not choose to imitate the malicious.
36:9 For those who are malicious will be exterminated: * but those who remain with the Lord, these will inherit the land.
36:10 Yet still a little while, and the sinner will not be: * and you will search his place and find nothing.
36:11 But the meek shall inherit the earth: * and they will delight in the multitude of peace.
36:12 The sinner will observe the just: * and he will gnash his teeth over him.
36:13 But the Lord will laugh at him: * for he knows in advance that his day will come.

Hyacinth the Pole was born to noble and Christian parents in the village of Kamień in the diocese of Wrocław. Instructed in letters from boyhood, after devoting himself to jurisprudence and sacred letters, he was admitted among the canons of Kraków, where he excelled the rest by the distinguished devoutness of his morals and supreme learning. Admitted at Rome into the Order of Preachers by its very founder Saint Dominic, he preserved most holily until the end of his life the perfect manner of living he had learned from him. He cultivated virginity perpetually; he cherished modesty, patience, humility, abstinence, and the other virtues as the sure patrimony of a religious life.

Burning with charity toward God, often spending whole nights in pouring forth prayers and chastising his body, he allowed himself no relief except leaning upon a stone or lying on the bare ground. Having returned to his homeland, he first erected at Friesach, on his journey, a most spacious monastery of his order, then soon another at Kraków. Thence, having built four others through the other provinces of the Polish kingdom, it is incredible to say how greatly he profited all by the preaching of the word of God and the innocence of his life. He let no day pass in which he did not give remarkable evidence of faith, devotion, and innocence.

Having led an admirable manner of life for about forty years after his profession, and having foretold to his brethren the day of his death, on the very feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, after completing the canonical Hours and receiving the sacraments of the Church with the highest veneration, with the words: Into your hands, O Lord, he rendered his spirit to God in the year of salvation one thousand two hundred and fifty-seven. Pope Clement VIII enrolled him, made illustrious even after death by miracles, in the number of the Saints.

For he had also cleansed that other man of leprosy, to whom he said: Go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for yourself the sacrifice which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. It must therefore be asked what leprosy itself signifies: for those who were freed from it are said not to have been healed, but cleansed. For it is a blemish of color, not of health or of the integrity of the senses and members.

Leprósi ergo non absúrde intélligi possunt, qui sciéntiam veræ fídei non habéntes, várias doctrínas profiténtur erróris. Non enim abscóndunt imperítiam suam; sed pro summa perítia próferunt in lucem, et iactántia sermónis osténtant. Nulla porro falsa doctrína est, quæ non áliqua vera intermísceat. Vera ergo falsis inordináte permíxta, in una disputatióne vel narratióne hóminis, tamquam in uníus córporis colóre apparéntia, signíficant lepram, tamquam veris falsísque colórum variántem atque maculántem.

Those who lack the knowledge of the true faith and profess various doctrines of error can therefore not unreasonably be understood as lepers. For they do not conceal their ignorance; rather, they bring it forth into the light as though it were the height of skill, and display it with the boastfulness of words. Moreover, there is no false teaching that does not interweave some truths. Thus truths disorderly mixed with falsehoods, in a single disputation or narrative of a man, as they appear in the color of a single body, signify leprosy, as it were varying and staining with an alternation of true and false colors.

Hi autem tam vitándi sunt Ecclésiæ, ut, si fíeri potest, lóngius remóti, magno clamóre Christum interpéllent; sicut isti decem stetérunt a longe, et levavérunt vocem, dicéntes: Iesu præcéptor, miserére nostri. Nam et quod præceptórem vocant, quo nómine néscio utrum quisquam Dóminum interpelláverit pro medicína corporáli; satis puto significáre, lepram falsam esse doctrínam, quam bonus præcéptor abstérgit.

Yet those who are to be shunned by the Church are to stand at a distance, as far as possible, and to cry out to Christ with a loud voice; as these ten stood afar off and lifted up their voice, saying: Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. For that they call him Master — a name by which I know not whether anyone else has ever addressed the Lord when seeking bodily healing — seems to me to signify well enough that leprosy is false doctrine, which a good Master wipes away.
