2 Et ait David ad Achímelech sacerdótem: Rex præcépit mihi sermónem et dixit: Nemo sciat rem propter quam missus es a me, et cuiúsmodi præcépta tibi déderim; nam et púeris condíxi in illum et illum locum.

1 Then David went into Nob, to the priest Ahimelech. And Ahimelech was astonished that David had arrived. And he said to him, 'Why are you alone, and no one is with you?'
2 And David said to the priest Ahimelech: 'The king has instructed to me a word, and he said: Let no one know the matter about which you have been sent by me, and what type of instructions I have given to you. For I have also summoned servants to one and another place.
3 Now therefore, if you have anything at hand, even five loaves of bread, or whatever you may find, give it to me.'

4 And the priest, responding to David, said to him: 'I have no common bread at hand, but only holy bread. Are the young men clean, especially from women?'
5 And David responded to the priest, and said to him: 'Indeed, as concerns being with women, we have abstained since yesterday and the day before, when we departed, and so the vessels of the young men have been holy. And although this journey has been defiled, it will also be sanctified today as concerns the vessels.'
6 Therefore, the priest gave to him sanctified bread. For there was no bread there, but only the bread of the Presence, which had been taken away from before the face of the Lord, so that fresh loaves might be set up.

Juliana, of the noble Falconieri family, was born of a most illustrious father — who at his own expense magnificently erected from its foundations in Florence, as it is now visited, the temple of the Mother of God greeted by the Angel — and of her mother Reguardata; both already old and until that time childless, she was born in the year twelve hundred and seventy. From her very cradle she gave no small token of future holiness, for from babbling lips she was heard to bring forth of her own accord the most sweet names of Jesus and Mary. Many women of the more noble families followed Juliana's example, and her own mother gave herself to be formed in the religious life by her daughter, so that, with the number gradually increasing, she established the Order of the Mantellate, and with the greatest prudence and holiness handed down to it the laws of a devout life. Since Saint Benizi had the most thorough knowledge of her virtues, when he was near death he wished to entrust no one more than Juliana not only with the women but with the entire Order of the Servants, of which he had been the propagator and director. Yet she herself always thought humbly of herself; and, though she was the teacher of the others, she served her sisters in every domestic task, however lowly. By her assiduousness in prayer she would spend entire days most often rapt in ecstasy; and if any time remained, she devoted it to calming civil disputes, drawing sinners back from the way of iniquity, and serving the sick; and at times, licking with her mouth the pus flowing from their sores, she would restore them to health. She was accustomed to mortify her body with scourges, knotted cords, iron girdles, vigils, and lying naked on the ground. She sustained herself on very sparse and coarse food for four days of the week, and on the remaining two was content with the Bread of Angels alone, except on Saturday, when she was nourished by bread and water only.

From such a harsh manner of living she fell into an illness of the stomach, which grew more serious as she entered her seventieth year of age, reducing her to the very last span of her life. She bore the inconveniences of her long illness with a serene countenance and steadfast spirit; she was heard to complain of only one thing: that, being unable in any way to take or retain food, she was kept from the Eucharistic table out of reverence for the Sacrament. But in this extremity she asked a priest to take the divine Bread that had been brought and, since she could not receive it by mouth, at least to apply it externally to her breast. The priest did as she asked; and — a marvel! — at that very moment the divine Bread disappeared, and Juliana breathed her last with a serene and smiling face. The matter was beyond belief for a long time, until the virginal body was cared for in the customary way; for there was found upon the left side of her breast, as if imprinted on her flesh like a seal, the form of a host depicting the figure of Christ crucified. The fame of this prodigy and of her other miracles won her the veneration not only of Florence but of the whole Christian world, and was so greatly increased over nearly four full centuries that at last Pope Benedict XIII ordered the proper Office to be recited at her feast by the entire order of the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Clement XII, most generous protector of the same order, enrolled her, shining with miracles new each day, in the catalogue of the holy Virgins.

Where the Lord imparted to many various kinds of healings, the crowd could be restrained neither by time nor by place from its eagerness to be healed. Evening fell upon them, they followed; the lake lay before them, they pressed on — and so he went up into the boat of Peter. This is the boat which, according to Matthew, is still tossed by the waves, and which, according to Luke, is filled with fishes: so that you may recognize both the beginnings of the Church tossed about and its later abundance overflowing. For the fishes are those who navigate this life. There Christ still sleeps among the disciples, here he commands; for he sleeps among the lukewarm, but watches over the perfect.
