This Confessor of the Lord, whom the peoples

By whose outstanding merit, frequently,

25 Et dixit unus quíspiam de Israël: Num vidístis virum hunc qui ascéndit? Ad exprobrándum enim Israéli ascéndit. Virum ergo, qui percússerit eum, ditábit rex divítiis magnis et fíliam suam dabit ei et domum patris eius fáciet absque tribúto in Israël.
26 Et ait David ad viros, qui stabant secum, dicens: Quid dábitur viro, qui percússerit Philisthǽum hunc et túlerit oppróbrium de Israël? Quis enim est hic Philisthǽus incircumcísus, qui exprobrávit ácies Dei vivéntis?
25 And someone of Israel said: 'Have you seen this man, who has risen up? For he ascended in order to reproach Israel. Therefore, the man who will strike him down, the king will enrich with great wealth, and will give to him his daughter, and will cause his father's house to be free of tribute in Israel.'
26 And David spoke to the men who were standing with him, saying: 'What will be given to the man who will have struck down this Philistine, and who will have taken away the disgrace from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should reproach the soldiers of the living God?'

Basil, a noble Cappadocian, having been marvelously educated at Athens together with his closest friend Gregory Nazianzen first in secular letters and then in a monastery in sacred matters, quickly ran his course to every excellence of doctrine and morals, so that he earned the surname Great. Called to Pontus to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, he brought that province, which had strayed from Christian practice, back to the way of salvation. Soon he was taken on as an assistant by Eusebius, bishop of Caesarea, to instruct that city, and afterward succeeded to his place. He was first in defending that the Son is consubstantial with the Father, and by miracles so softened the Emperor Valens, who was angry with him, that he forced him, when he was pressing to carry out his will to drive him into exile, to depart from his purpose.

He was of admirable abstinence and continence; he was content with one tunic; most diligent in observing fasts; assiduous in prayer, in which he often spent entire nights. He preserved his virginity perpetually. Having built monasteries, he so ordered the monastic life that he admirably united at once the advantages of the solitary and the active life. He wrote many things learnedly; and no one, as Gregory of Nazianzus testifies, explained the books of Holy Scripture more truly or more abundantly. He died on the Kalends of January, by then alive only in spirit, and seeming to consist of nothing besides bones and skin, with no other bodily substance remaining.

Perfect renunciation consists in this: that we attain to the point of not being inclined even to attachment to life itself, and of having the sentence of death, so as not to trust in ourselves. Such renunciation, however, takes its beginning from detachment from external things, such as possessions, vain glory, habitual ways of living, and love of useless things; as the holy disciples of our Lord also showed us by their own example — James and John, who left behind their father Zebedee and the very boat on which their entire livelihood depended; and Matthew, who rose from the tax collector's table and followed the Lord.

And in another place, having first said: If you wish to be perfect, go, sell all that you have and give to the poor; he afterward added: Come, follow me.

And in sum, it is the translation of the human heart to a heavenly manner of life, so that it is permitted to say: Our citizenship is in heaven; and (what is greatest) it is the beginning by which we come to the likeness of Christ, who, though he was rich, became poor for our sake.
