43 Cum dimíssa esset synagóga, secúti sunt multi Iudæórum et coléntium advenárum, Paulum et Bárnabam; qui loquéntes suadébant eis ut permanérent in grátia Dei.
44 Sequénti vero sábbato pene univérsa cívitas convénit audíre verbum Dei.
45 Vidéntes autem turbas Iudǽi, repléti sunt zelo, et contradicébant his, quæ a Paulo dicebántur, blasphemántes.
46 Tunc constánter Paulus et Bárnabas dixérunt: Vobis oportébat primum loqui verbum Dei; sed, quóniam repéllitis illud, et indígnos vos iudicátis ætérnæ vitæ, ecce convértimur ad gentes;
47 sic enim præcépit nobis Dóminus: Pósui te in lucem Géntium, ut sis in salútem usque ad extrémum terræ.
43 And when the synagogue had been dismissed, many among the Jews and the new worshipers were following Paul and Barnabas. And they, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
44 Yet truly, on the following Sabbath, nearly the entire city came together to hear the Word of God.
45 Then the Jews, seeing the crowds, were filled with envy, and they, blaspheming, contradicted the things that were being said by Paul.
46 Then Paul and Barnabas said firmly: "It was necessary to speak the Word of God first to you. But because you reject it, and so judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.
47 For so has the Lord instructed us: 'I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"

50 But the Jews incited some devout and honest women, and the leaders of the city. And they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas. And they drove them away from their parts.
51 But they, shaking the dust from their feet against them, went on to Iconium.
52 The disciples were likewise filled with gladness and with the Holy Spirit.

1 Now it happened in Iconium that they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and they spoke in such a way that a copious multitude of both Jews and Greeks believed.
2 Yet truly, the Jews who were unbelieving had incited and enflamed the souls of the Gentiles against the brothers.
3 And so, they remained for a long time, acting faithfully in the Lord, offering testimony to the Word of his grace, providing signs and wonders done by their hands.

Barnabas the Levite, a Cypriot by birth, who was also called Joseph, was ordained with Paul as an Apostle to the Gentiles to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Having sold the field he owned, he brought the money obtained from it to the Apostles. Sent to Antioch for the purpose of preaching, when he found that many there had been converted to the faith of Christ the Lord, he rejoiced exceedingly and exhorted them to remain in the faith of Christ. By this exhortation he made much progress, because he was held by all to be a good man and full of the Holy Spirit.

When Paul and Barnabas were serving the Lord at Antioch in the Church, with the other prophets and teachers, in fasting and prayer, the Holy Spirit said: Set apart for me Saul and Barnabas for the work to which I have called them. Then, fasting and praying and laying their hands upon them, they sent them forth. And so they came to Seleucia, and from there to Cyprus; and they traveled through many other cities and regions, preaching the Gospel to the very great benefit of those who heard them. Finally, Barnabas, parting from Paul, sailed with John who was surnamed Mark to Cyprus; and there, around the seventh year of Nero, on the third day before the Ides of June, he added the crown of martyrdom to the honor of the apostolic office. His body was found, under the emperor Zeno, on the island of Cyprus; on his breast was the Gospel of Matthew, written in Barnabas's own hand.

When the Lord had cast out all anxiety from the hearts of the disciples, and had armed them with the display of signs, and had made them, as it were, iron and adamantine—detached from all worldly affairs and freed from every care for temporal things—he then at length foretold the adversities that would befall them. For from this foretelling of future events many benefits followed. First, that they might learn the power of his foreknowledge. Next, that no one might suspect that such grave evils descended from the weakness of their Master. Furthermore, lest those who were to suffer them be thrown into confusion by a sudden and unforeseen turn of events. Finally, lest, when they heard these things just before the time of his own Passion, they be too greatly disturbed.

Now, so that they might understand that this is a new kind of warfare and an unaccustomed manner of fighting, when he sent them out naked, clothed only in a tunic, without sandals, without staff, without belt and wallet, and commanded them to be fed by those who received them — he did not end his discourse there, but displaying his inexplicable power, he said: Even so as you go, show the meekness of sheep, although you are going to wolves — and not simply to wolves, but even into the midst of wolves: (for he commands them to have not only the meekness of sheep but also the simplicity of the dove); for thus I shall display my power most fully, when wolves are overcome by sheep; and though they are in the midst of wolves, and are torn by countless cruelties, not only shall they not be consumed, but they shall even transform them to their own nature.

It is certainly a greater and more admirable thing to change the minds of adversaries and turn their hearts in a different direction than to kill them; especially since there were only twelve of them, and the whole world was full of wolves. For as long as we are sheep, we prevail; for then the help of the shepherd departs from us, he who feeds not wolves but sheep.
