O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.

For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.

He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.

For this, with suppliant prayer

2 Et erat ei fílius vocábulo Saul eléctus et bonus, et non erat vir de fíliis Israël mélior illo: ab húmero et sursum eminébat super omnem pópulum.
3 Períerant autem ásinæ Cis patris Saul, et dixit Cis ad Saul fílium suum: Tolle tecum unum de púeris et consúrgens vade et quære ásinas. Qui, cum transíssent per montem Ephraim
4 et per terram Salísa et non inveníssent, transiérunt étiam per terram Salim, et non erant, sed et per terram Iémini, et mínime reperérunt.

1 Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a man of Benjamin, strong and robust.
2 And he had a son called Saul, an elect and good man. And there was not a man among the sons of Israel better than he was. For he stood head and shoulders above all the people.
3 Now the donkeys of Kish, the father of Saul, had become lost. And Kish said to his son Saul, ‘Take with you one of the servants, and rising up, go out and seek the donkeys.’ And when they had passed through mount Ephraim,
4 and through the land of Shalishah, and had not found them, they crossed also through the land of Shaalim, and they were not there, and through the land of Benjamin, and they found nothing.

℟ Peccávi super númerum arénæ maris, et multiplicáta sunt peccáta mea: et non sum dignus vidére altitúdinem cæli præ multitúdine iniquitátis meæ: quóniam irritávi iram tuam,

℟ I have sinned beyond the number of the sands of the sea, and my sins have been multiplied; and I am not worthy to look up to the height of heaven because of the multitude of my iniquity, for I have provoked your anger,

6 Qui ait ei: Ecce vir Dei est in civitáte hac, vir nóbilis: omne quod lóquitur, sine ambiguitáte venit; nunc ergo eámus illuc, si forte índicet nobis de via nostra, propter quam vénimus.
7 Dixítque Saul ad púerum suum: Ecce íbimus: quid ferémus ad virum Dei? panis defécit in sitárciis nostris, et spórtulam non habémus, ut demus hómini Dei, nec quidquam áliud.

5 And when they had arrived in the land of Zuph, Saul said to the servant who was with him: 'Come, and let us return, otherwise perhaps my father may forget the donkeys, and become anxious over us.'
6 And he said to him: 'Behold, there is a man of God in this city, a noble man. All that he says, happens without fail. Now therefore, let us go there, if perhaps he may reveal to us our way, because of which we have come.'
7 And Saul said to his servant: 'Behold, let us go. But what will we bring to the man of God? The bread in our sacks has run out, and we have no small gift to give to the man of God, nor anything else.'
8 The servant again responded to Saul, and he said: 'Behold, there is found in my hand a coin of the fourth part of a stater. Let us give it to the man of God, so that he may reveal to us our way.'

℟ You have heard, O Lord, the prayer of your servant, that I should build a temple for your name:

16 Hac ipsa hora, quæ nunc est, cras mittam virum ad te de terra Béniamin, et unges eum ducem super pópulum meum Israël, et salvábit pópulum meum de manu Philisthinórum, quia respéxi pópulum meum; venit enim clamor eórum ad me.

14 And they ascended into the city. And as they were walking in the midst of the city, Samuel appeared, advancing to meet them, so that he might ascend to the high place.
15 Now the Lord had revealed to the ear of Samuel, one day before Saul had arrived, saying:
16 'Tomorrow, at the same hour that it is now, I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin. And you shall anoint him to be the leader over my people Israel. And he shall free my people from the hand of the Philistines, for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.'
17 And when Samuel had caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him: 'Behold, the man about whom I spoke to you. This one shall rule over my people.'

Boniface, formerly called Winfrid, was born among the English toward the end of the seventh century, and from his very infancy held the world in aversion and had the monastic life in his desires. When his father had tried in vain to change his purpose by the allurements of the world, he entered a monastery and was imbued under the discipline of the blessed Wolfhard with every kind of virtue and knowledge. In his thirtieth year he was distinguished with the priesthood, and as an assiduous preacher of the divine word he labored in this office with great fruit for souls. Yet, desiring to extend the kingdom of Christ, he continually wept over the vast multitude of barbarians, immersed in the darkness of ignorance, who served the demon. And when this zeal for souls increased daily with an inextinguishable ardor, having sought out the divine will through tears and prayers, he obtained from the superior of the monastery permission to set out for the German shores.

Setting sail from England with two companions, he came to Dorestad, a town of Frisia. But when a most grave war broke out between Radbod, King of the Frisians, and Charles Martel, he preached the Gospel without fruit. He therefore returned to England and went back to his monastery, over which he was placed as superior against his will. After the lapse of two years, with the consent of the Bishop of Winchester, he resigned the charge, and went to Rome, that he might be delegated by apostolic authority for the conversion of the Gentiles. When he had arrived in the City, he was graciously received by Gregory the Second, and was named Boniface by the Pontiff in place of Winfried. Directed into Germany, he preached Christ to the peoples of Thuringia and Saxony. In the meantime, Radbod, King of Frisia and most bitter enemy of the Christian name, having died, Boniface returned to the Frisians, where as a companion of Saint Willibrord he preached the Gospel for three years with such fruit that, with the idols destroyed, churches were raised up without number to the true God.

Sought for the episcopal office by Saint Willibrord, he declined it so as to be more free to devote himself to the salvation of unbelievers. Setting out for Germany, he drew many thousands of the Hessians away from the superstition of the devil. Summoned to Rome by Gregory the Pontiff, he was consecrated bishop after a remarkable profession of faith. Returning thence to the Germans, he thoroughly purged Hesse and Thuringia from the remnants of idolatry. For such great merits, Boniface was raised by Gregory III to the dignity of archbishop, and on his third journey to Rome was appointed legate of the Apostolic See by the Supreme Pontiff. Armed with this authority, he established four bishoprics and celebrated various synods, among which the memorable Council of Leptines is noteworthy, celebrated among the Belgians in the diocese of Cambrai, at which time he contributed greatly to the increase of faith in Belgium. Created archbishop of Mainz by Pope Zachary, at the command of the Pontiff himself he anointed Pepin as king of the Franks. After the death of Saint Willibrord, he undertook the governance of the church of Utrecht, first through Eoban and then through himself, when he had been released from the church of Mainz and resided at Utrecht. Setting out again to preach the Gospel to the Frisians who had relapsed into idolatry, while engaged in his pastoral duty he was slain in a bloody massacre near the river Borne together with Eoban his co-bishop and many others, and was crowned with the palm of martyrdom. The body of Saint Boniface was translated to Mainz and, as he himself had requested while living, was laid to rest in the monastery of Fulda which he had built, where it became illustrious by many miracles. Pius IX, Supreme Pontiff, extended his Office and Mass to the universal Church.

Beáti mundo corde; quóniam ipsi Deum vidébunt. Quam ergo stulti sunt, qui Deum istis exterióribus óculis quærunt, cum corde videátur, sicut álibi scriptum est: Et in simplicitáte cordis quærite illum. Hoc est enim mundum cor, quod est simplex cor. Et quemádmodum lumen hoc vidéri non potest, nisi óculis mundis; ita nec Deus vidétur, nisi mundum sit illud quo vidéri potest. Beáti pacífici; quóniam ipsi fílii Dei vocabúntur. In pace perféctio est, ubi nihil repúgnat; et ídeo fílii Dei pacífici, quóniam nihil in his resístit Deo, et útique fílii similitúdinem patris habére debent.

Blessed are the pure of heart: for they shall see God. How foolish, therefore, are those who seek God with these outward eyes, since he is seen with the heart, as it is written elsewhere: Seek him in simplicity of heart. For a pure heart is a simple heart. And just as this light cannot be seen except by pure eyes, so neither is God seen unless that by which he can be seen is pure. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God. In peace there is perfection, where nothing is in conflict; and therefore the peacemakers are sons of God, because nothing in them resists God, and surely sons ought to bear the likeness of their father.

Pacífici autem in semetípsis sunt, qui omnes ánimi sui motus componéntes, et subiiciéntes ratióni, id est menti et spirítui, carnalésque concupiscéntias habéntes edómitas, fiunt regnum Dei. In quo ita sunt ordináta ómnia, ut id quod est in hómine præcípuum et excéllens, hoc ímperet, céteris non reluctántibus, quæ sunt nobis bestiísque commúnia; atque idípsum quod excélluit in hómine, id est mens et rátio, subiiciátur potióri, quod est ipsa véritas, unigénitus Fílius Dei. Neque enim imperáre inferióribus potest, nisi superióri se ipse subiíciat. Et hæc est pax, quæ datur in terra homínibus bonæ voluntátis; hæc vita consummáti perfectíque sapiéntis.

Those who are at peace within themselves are those who, ordering and subjecting all the movements of their soul to reason — that is, to the mind and spirit — and having the lusts of the flesh brought into subjection, become the kingdom of God. In that kingdom all things are so ordered that what is preeminent and excellent in man governs the rest without resistance — those faculties that we share with the beasts — and that which excels in man, namely the mind and reason, is itself subjected to what is greater, which is Truth itself, the Only Begotten Son of God. For the lower cannot be governed unless it subjects itself to what is higher. And this is the peace that is given on earth to men of good will; this is the life of the consummated and perfect sage.

℟ A certain man made a great supper, and sent his servant at the hour of supper to tell those invited to come,

De huiúsmodi regno pacatíssimo et ordinatíssimo missus est foras princeps huius sæculi, qui pervérsis inordinatísque dominátur. Hac pace intrínsecus constitúta atque firmáta, quascúmque persecutiónes ille, qui foras missus est, forínsecus concitáverit, auget glóriam, quæ secúndum Deum est; non áliquid in illo ædifício labefáctans, sed deficiéntibus máchinis suis innotéscere fáciens, quanta fírmitas intus exstrúcta sit. Ideo séquitur: Beáti, qui persecutiónem patiúntur propter iustítiam; quóniam ipsórum est regnum cælórum.

From this most peaceful and well-ordered kingdom, the prince of this world was cast out — he who holds dominion over the perverse and disordered. With this peace established and confirmed within, whatever persecutions that one who has been cast out may stir up from without serve only to increase the glory that is according to God; not shaking anything in that building, but making known, when his engines fail, how great is the firmness built up within. Hence what follows: Blessed are those who suffer persecution for the sake of justice, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
