2 Et statim fui in spíritu: et ecce sedes pósita erat in cælo, et supra sedem sedens.
3 Et qui sedébat símilis erat aspéctui lápidis iáspidis, et sárdinis: et iris erat in circúitu sedis símilis visióni smarágdinæ.
4 Et in circúitu sedis sedília vigínti quátuor: et super thronos vigínti quátuor senióres sedéntes, circumamícti vestiméntis albis, et in capítibus eórum corónæ áureæ.
5 Et de throno procedébant fúlgura, et voces, et tonítrua: et septem lámpades ardéntes ante thronum, qui sunt septem spíritus Dei.

1 After these things, I saw, and behold, a door was opened in heaven, and the voice that I heard speaking with me first was like a trumpet, saying: 'Ascend to here, and I will reveal to you what must occur after these things.'
2 And immediately I was in the Spirit. And behold, a throne had been placed in heaven, and there was One sitting upon the throne.
3 And the One who was sitting there was similar in appearance to a stone of jasper and sardius. And there was an iridescence surrounding the throne, in aspect similar to an emerald.
4 And surrounding the throne were twenty-four smaller thrones. And upon the thrones, twenty-four elders were sitting, clothed entirely in white vestments, and on their heads were gold crowns.
5 And from the throne, lightnings and voices and thunders went forth. And there were seven burning lamps before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.

8 And each of the four living creatures had upon them six wings, and all around and within they are full of eyes. And they took no rest, day or night, from saying: 'Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.'

Bene, cum esset iustus, nóluit eam tradúcere; quia, sicut nequáquam iustus esset, si cógnitam ream consensísset; sic nihilóminus iustus non esset, si probátam innóxiam condemnásset. Cum ergo iustus esset et nollet eam tradúcere, vóluit occúlte dimíttere eam. Quare vóluit dimíttere? Accipe et in hoc, non meam, sed Patrum senténtiam. It is written: "Joseph her husband, being a just man and unwilling to expose her, resolved to put her away secretly." Well, being a just man, he was unwilling to expose her; for just as he would by no means have been just if he had consented when he knew her guilty, so likewise he would not have been just if he had condemned her when he had found her innocent. Since, therefore, he was just and unwilling to expose her, he resolved to put her away secretly. Why did he wish to put her away? Receive in this also, not my opinion, but that of the Fathers. Joseph wished to put her away for the same reason that Peter sought to remove the Lord from himself, saying: "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man"; and for the same reason that the centurion forbade him from entering his house, when he said: "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof."

He saw and trembled at the most certain sign of the divine presence that she bore; and because he could not penetrate the mystery, he wished to dismiss her. Peter was struck with awe at the magnitude of the power; the centurion was struck with awe at the majesty of the presence; and Joseph, too, as a man, was filled with dread at the newness of so great a miracle. Are you surprised that Joseph judged himself unworthy of the companionship of the pregnant Virgin, when you hear that even holy Elizabeth could not endure her presence without trembling and reverence? For she says: And why is this granted to me, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?

For how would they believe in the Truth silent in the womb, when later they despised him crying aloud in the temple? What would they have done to her who had not yet appeared, against whom they afterward laid impious hands even when she shone with miracles? Rightly, therefore, did the just man, lest he be forced either to lie or to defame one who was innocent, wish to put her away secretly.

Matthew, beginning his work, says: ‘The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham’ — yet he does not stop there; for his account proceeds all the way to the Betrothed of the Virgin. Luke, however, after the declaration of the Savior at his Baptism, draws his account somewhat differently and writes in this manner: ‘Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years old, as he was supposed, the son of Joseph, who was the son of Heli, who was the son of Matthat’; and so continuing upward to ‘Seth, who was the son of Adam, who was the son of God.’ Since, therefore, Joseph’s lineage is traced in this manner, it is at the same time demonstrated that the Virgin herself, the Mother of God Mary, belonged to the same tribe as he. For by the law of Moses it was not permitted for any tribe to intermingle with another tribe, lest the inheritance of a family should pass from one tribe to another.

It was not without reason that the birth of Christ from the Holy Spirit was kept silent among the people, and Joseph was assumed in the place of father; and from this, as is consistent with the truth, he was reckoned as the father of the Child. For had this not been so, the Child would have been thought to be without a father, since his lineage would not have been reckoned from the paternal side. For this reason it was necessary for the distinguished Evangelists to recount the lineage of Joseph. For if, passing over this, they had woven the line of his descent from the maternal side, apart from being unseemly, it would have been contrary to the custom of the sacred Scriptures. Fittingly, therefore, tracing the lineage of Joseph from David for the reason we have stated, they confirm at the same time that the Virgin Mary was also descended from David — inferring the wife's lineage together with the husband's.

That Joseph was endowed with justice and led a life in harmony with the law is clear to no one more than another. Moreover, living according to the precept of the law, he surely betrothed a wife from none other than his own tribe. Wherefore, if Joseph was of the tribe of Judah and from the lineage and family of David, is it not fitting that Mary also should spring from the same? From this it followed that the lineage of the Spouse was traced. For, since according to the Apostle's teaching the husband is the head of the wife; what argument can possibly be brought against the conclusion that when the lineage of the head is traced, the body along with the head is thereby also traced? I therefore consider it to be clearly shown that the lineage of Joseph is not enumerated in vain by the Evangelists; from which it follows by necessary consequence that the Virgin too is understood to be descended from David, and that Christ, who was born of her by a preeminent miracle, is the Son of God before all ages.
