The fast, as taught by holy lore,
We keep in solemn course once more:
The fast to all men known, and bound
In forty days of yearly round.
The law and seers that were of old
In diverse ways this Lent foretold,
Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide,
In after ages sanctified.
More sparing therefore let us make
The words we speak, the food we take,
Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred
Be every sense in holy guard.
Avoid the evil thoughts that roll
Like waters o’er the heedless soul;
Nor let the foe occasion find
Our souls in slavery to bind.
In prayer together let us fall,
And cry for mercy, one and all,
And weep before the Judge’s feet,
And his avenging wrath entreat.
Thy grace have we offended sore,

Non enim quǽreret quem fécerat, nisi fíeret ipse quod fécerat. Verum hoc mementóte, et de córdibus vestris nolíte dimíttere: sic esse Christum hóminem factum, ut non destíterit Deus esse. In this chapter of the Gospel, brothers, our Lord Jesus Christ commended himself most fully, according to his humanity, to our faith. For he always did this through his words and deeds, that he might be believed to be both God and man: God who made us, man who sought us; God always with the Father, man with us in time. For he would not have sought him whom he had made, unless he himself had become what he had made. But remember this, and do not let it depart from your hearts: Christ became man in such a way that he did not cease to be God. Remaining God, he took on man, he who had made man.

When, therefore, he hid himself as a man, he is not to be thought to have lost his power, but to have given an example to our weakness. For he was detained when he willed, and killed when he willed. But because his members — that is, his faithful — were yet to come, who would not have that power which he himself had as our God: what he did in hiding, what he concealed as if to avoid being killed, indicated what his members would do — in which members he himself, of course, was present.

For Christ is not in the head without being in the body: rather, Christ whole is in the head and in the body. Therefore what his members are, he is; but what he is, his members are not necessarily. For if they were not his members, he would not have said to Saul: Why do you persecute me? For it was not Saul who persecuted him, but his members — that is, his faithful ones — on earth. Yet he did not choose to say my saints, my servants, or, in a yet more honorable way, my brothers; but me, that is, my members, of whom I am the head.
