The fast, as taught by holy lore,
We keep in solemn course once more:
The fast to all men known, and bound
In forty days of yearly round.
The law and seers that were of old
In diverse ways this Lent foretold,
Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide,
In after ages sanctified.
More sparing therefore let us make
The words we speak, the food we take,
Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred
Be every sense in holy guard.
Avoid the evil thoughts that roll
Like waters o’er the heedless soul;
Nor let the foe occasion find
Our souls in slavery to bind.
In prayer together let us fall,
And cry for mercy, one and all,
And weep before the Judge’s feet,
And his avenging wrath entreat.
Thy grace have we offended sore,

Quod maledicéndo ficum infructuósam per figúram fecit Dóminus, hoc idem mox apértius osténdit, eiciéndo ímprobos e templo. Neque enim áliquid peccávit arbor, quod esuriénte Dómino poma non hábuit, quorum necdum tempus advénerat: sed peccavére sacerdótes, qui in domo Dómini negótia sæculária gerébant, et fructum pietátis, quem debúerant, quemque in eis Dóminus esuriébat, ferre superséderant. Arefécit Dóminus árborem maledícto, ut hómines hæc vidéntes, sive audiéntes, multo magis intellégerent sese divíno condemnándos esse iudício, si absque óperum fructu, de plausu tantum sibi religiósi sermónis, velut de sónitu et teguménto blandiréntur viridántium foliórum.
What the Lord did figuratively by cursing the barren fig tree, he presently showed more openly by driving the wicked out of the temple. For the tree did not sin by failing to have fruit for the hungry Lord, since its time had not yet come; but the priests sinned who conducted secular business in the house of the Lord, and had neglected to bring forth the fruit of piety which they owed, and for which the Lord hungered in them. The Lord withered the tree with a curse, so that men seeing or hearing this might understand far better that they themselves were to be condemned by divine judgment, if, without the fruit of works, they flattered themselves merely on the applause of pious speech, as though on the rustling and covering of green leaves.

But because they did not understand, he consequently exercised upon them the strictness of deserved punishment: and he drove out the trade in human goods from that house, in which it had been commanded that only divine things should be transacted, that victims and prayers should be offered to God, that the word of God should be read, heard, and sung. And indeed it is to be believed that he found sold or bought in the temple only what was necessary for the ministry of that same temple, in view of what we read done on another occasion, when entering the same temple he found in it those selling and buying sheep, oxen, and doves: for without doubt all these things were bought by those who came from afar from the native inhabitants only so that they might be offered in the house of the Lord.

If, therefore, the Lord was not willing that even those things should be sold in the temple which he wished to be offered there—on account of the vice of avarice or fraud, which tends to be the characteristic sin of traders—with what severity do you suppose he would punish those whom he found there engaged in laughter, idle speech, or given over to any other vice? For if the Lord does not allow temporal business to be transacted in his house, even when such things could be freely done elsewhere: how much more do those things deserve the wrath of heaven, which may nowhere be done, if they are done in the houses consecrated to God? But because the Holy Spirit appeared over the Lord in the form of a dove, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are rightly signified by doves. Now who are those in the temple of God today who sell doves, but those who in the Church receive payment for the laying on of hands, by which the Holy Spirit is given from heaven?
