9 scílicet advérsus Chodorláhomor regem Elamitárum, et Thadal regem Géntium, et Amraphel regem Sénnaar, et Arioch regem Ponti: quátuor reges advérsus quinque.
10 Vallis autem Silvéstris habébat púteos multos bitúminis. Itaque rex Sodomórum, et Gomórrhæ, terga vertérunt, ceciderúntque ibi: et qui remánserant, fugérunt ad montem.

8 And the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and indeed the king of Bela, which is Zoar, went forth. And they directed their ranks against them in the wooded valley,
9 namely against Chedorlaomer, king of the Elamites, and Tidal, king of the Nations, and Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Pontus: four kings against five.
10 Now the wooded valley had many pits of bitumen. And so the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah turned back, and they fell there. And those who remained fled to the mountain.
11 Then they took all the substance of the Sodomites and the Gomorrahites, and all that pertained to food, and they went away,
12 along with both Lot, the son of Abram's brother, who lived in Sodom, and his substance.

Do not stretch out your hand against the boy, because you fear the Lord.

13 And behold, one who had escaped reported it to Abram the Hebrew, who lived in the steep valley of Mamre the Amorite, who was the brother of Eshcol, and the brother of Aner. For these had formed an agreement with Abram.
14 When Abram had heard this, namely, that his brother Lot had been taken captive, he numbered three hundred and eighteen of his own armed men and he went in pursuit all the way to Dan.
15 And dividing his company, he rushed upon them in the night. And he struck them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
16 And he brought back all the substance, and Lot his brother, with his substance, likewise the women and the people.

℟ The Angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time, saying: I will bless you,

Et multiplicábo te sicut stellas cæli.

17 Then the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after he returned from the slaughter at Chedorlaomer, and the kings who were with him at the valley of Shaveh, which is the valley of the king.
18 Then in truth, Melchizedek, the king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine, for he was a priest of the Most High God;
19 he blessed him, and he said: 'Blessed be Abram by the Most High God, who created heaven and earth.
20 And blessed be the Most High God, through whose protection the enemies are in your hands.' And he gave him tithes from everything.

Thoroughly trained in letters and the sciences, he betook himself to John, Bishop of Jerusalem, to be perfected in the Christian faith. Burning with zeal for the salvation of souls, he directed all his efforts to preserving the flock entrusted to him in the integrity of faith and morals and defending it from the poisoned pastures of unbelievers and heretics. Hence he endeavored both to expel the followers of Novatus from the city and to have the Jews punished according to the laws, who in their fury had conspired for the slaughter of Christians. The singular zeal of Cyril for the preservation of the Catholic faith shone forth especially against Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople, who claimed that Jesus Christ had been born of the Virgin Mary as man only and not as God, and that divinity had been conferred on him as a reward for his merits; and when he had tried in vain to correct him, he denounced him to the holy Supreme Pontiff Celestine.

At last, having fulfilled the greatest labors for the Church of God, and having published very many writings both to refute pagans and heretics and to expound the sacred Scriptures and the Catholic doctrines, he rested with a holy end in the year four hundred and forty-four, the thirty-second of his episcopate. Our Redeemer, foreseeing that the minds of his disciples would be troubled by his Passion, foretold to them long beforehand both the suffering of that same Passion and the glory of his Resurrection: so that, when they saw him dying as had been foretold, they might not doubt that he would also rise again. But because the disciples were still carnal and in no way able to grasp the words of the mystery, he comes to a miracle. Before their eyes, a blind man received the light: so that those who could not grasp the words of the heavenly mystery might be confirmed in faith by heavenly deeds.

℟ Veni hódie ad fontem aquæ, et orávi Dóminum, dicens:

℟ Today I came to the spring of water, and I prayed to the Lord, saying:

Dómine, Deus Abraham, tu prósperum fecísti desidérium meum.

O Lord, God of Abraham, you have made my desire prosper.

℣ Igitur puélla, cui díxero, Da mihi aquam de hýdria tua, ut bibam: et illa díxerit, Bibe, dómine, et camélis tuis potum tríbuam: ipsa est, quam præparávit Dóminus fílio dómini mei.

℣ Therefore, the maiden to whom I shall say, Give me water to drink from your jar, and she shall say, Drink, my lord, and I will give your camels drink also: she it is whom the Lord has prepared for the son of my master.

℟ Dómine, Deus Abraham, tu prósperum fecísti desidérium meum.

℟ O Lord, God of Abraham, you have made my desire prosper.

℣ Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

℣ Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Sed mirácula Dómini et Salvatóris nostri sic accipiénda sunt, fratres caríssimi, ut et in veritáte credántur facta, et tamen per significatiónem nobis aliquid ínnuant. Opera quippe eius et per poténtiam áliud osténdunt, et per mystérium áliud loquúntur. Ecce enim, quis iuxta históriam cæcus iste fúerit, ignorámus: sed tamen quid per mystérium signíficet, nóvimus. Cæcum quippe est genus humánum, quod in parénte primo a paradísi gáudiis expúlsum, claritátem supérnæ lucis ignórans, damnatiónis suæ ténebras pátitur. Sed tamen per Redemptóris sui præséntiam illuminátur: ut intérnæ lucis gáudia iam per desidérium vídeat, atque in via vitæ boni óperis gressus ponat.

But the miracles of our Lord and Savior must be received in this way, dearest brethren, that they be believed as truly done, and yet that through their signification they intimate something to us. For his works show one thing by their power and speak another thing by their mystery. For indeed, who that man was who was blind according to the history, we do not know: but nevertheless what he signifies through the mystery, we know. For the human race is blind, which, cast out in its first parent from the joys of paradise, and ignorant of the brightness of the heavenly light, suffers the darkness of its damnation. Yet it is illuminated through the presence of its Redeemer: so that it may now see the joys of the interior light through desire, and set the steps of good works upon the way of life.

℟ Factus est sermo Dómini ad Abram, dicens:

℟ The word of the Lord came to Abram, saying:

Noli timére, Abram: ego protéctor tuus sum, et merces tua magna nimis.

Fear not, Abram: I am your protector, and your reward is exceedingly great.

℣ Ego enim sum Dóminus Deus tuus, qui edúxi te de Ur Chaldæórum.

℣ For I am the Lord your God, who brought you forth from Ur of the Chaldeans.

Dum ígitur Cónditor noster appropínquat Iéricho, cæcus ad lumen redit: quia dum divínitas deféctum nostræ carnis suscépit, humánum genus lumen, quod amíserat, recépit.
