Hymnus

Deus tuórum mílitum
Sors, et córona, prǽmium,
Laudes canéntes Mártyris
Absólve nexu críminis.

Hic nempe mundi gáudia,
Et blanda fraudum pábula
Imbúta felle députans,
Pervénit ad cæléstia.

Pœnas cucúrrit fórtiter,
Et sústulit viríliter,
Fundénsque pro te sánguinem,
Ætérna dona póssidet.

Ob hoc precátu súpplici
Te póscimus, piíssime;
In hoc triúmpho Mártyris
Dimítte noxam sérvulis.

Laus et perénnis glória
Patri sit, atque Fílio,
Sancto simul Paráclito,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.

O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.

For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.

He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.

For this, with suppliant prayer
we entreat you, most merciful One;
in this triumph of the Martyr
forgive your servants their offenses.

Let enduring praise and glory
be to the Father, and to the Son,
and likewise to the Holy Paraclete,
through all eternal ages.
Amen.

Nocturnus 1

Nocturn 1

Ant.

Ant. In the law of the Lord * was his delight day and night.

Psalmus 1

Psalm 1

1:1 Blessed is the man who has not followed the counsel of the impious, and has not remained in the way of sinners, * and has not sat in the chair of pestilence:
1:2 But his will is with the law of the Lord, * and he will meditate on his law, day and night.
1:3a And he will be like a tree that has been planted beside running waters, * which will provide its fruit in its time:
1:3b And its leaf will not fall away: * and all things whatsoever that he does will prosper.
1:4 Not so the impious, not so: * but they are like the dust that the wind casts along the face of the earth.
1:5 Therefore, the impious will not prevail again in judgment: * nor sinners in the council of the just.
1:6 For the Lord knows the way of the just: * and the path of the impious will pass away.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Psalmus 2

Psalm 2

2:3 Dirumpámus víncula eórum: * et proiciámus a nobis iugum ipsórum.
2:4 Qui hábitat in cælis, irridébit eos: * et Dóminus subsannábit eos.
2:7 Dóminus dixit ad me: * Fílius meus es tu, ego hódie génui te.
2:8 Póstula a me, et dabo tibi gentes hereditátem tuam, * et possessiónem tuam términos terræ.
2:9 Reges eos in virga férrea, * et tamquam vas fíguli confrínges eos.
2:11 Servíte Dómino in timóre: * et exsultáte ei cum tremóre.

2:1 Why have the Gentiles been seething: * and why have the people been pondering nonsense?
2:2 The kings of the earth have stood up, and the leaders have joined together as one * against the Lord, and against his Christ:
2:3 Let us shatter their chains: * and cast their yoke away from us.
2:4 He who dwells in heaven will ridicule them: * and the Lord will mock them.
2:5 Then will he speak to them in his anger, * and trouble them with his fury.
2:6 Yet I have been appointed king by him over Zion, his holy mountain, * preaching his precepts.
2:7 The Lord has said to me: * You are my son, this day have I begotten you.
2:8 Ask of me, and I will give to you the Gentiles for your inheritance, * and the ends of the earth for your possession.
2:9 You will rule them with an iron rod, * and you will shatter them like a potter's vessel.
2:10 And now, O kings, understand: * be instructed, you who judge the earth.
2:11 Serve the Lord in fear: * and rejoice before him with trembling.
2:12 Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, * and you perish from the just way.
2:13 When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time: * blessed are all who trust in him.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 3

Psalm 3

3:2 Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt qui tríbulant me? * multi insúrgunt advérsum me.
3:7 Non timébo míllia pópuli circumdántis me: * exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus.

3:2 Lord, why have they who trouble me been multiplied? * Many rise up against me.
3:3 Many say of my soul: * There is no salvation for him in his God.
3:4 But you, O Lord, are my sustainer, * my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.
3:5 With my voice I cried out to the Lord: * and he heard me from his holy mountain.
3:6 I slept, and took my rest: * and I arose, for the Lord sustained me.
3:7 I will not fear thousands of people surrounding me: * arise, O Lord, save me, O my God.
3:8 For you have struck all who oppose me without cause: * you have broken the teeth of sinners.
3:9 Salvation belongs to the Lord: * and your blessing is upon your people.

Amen.

Ant.

Ant. With my voice I cried to the Lord: and he heard me from his holy mountain.

Mirífica Dómine misericórdias tuas.

Show forth, O Lord, your mercies.

Qui salvos facis sperántes in te.

You who save those who trust in you.

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:

Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:

And lead us not into temptation:

Sed líbera nos a malo.

But deliver us from evil.

Absolutio.

Absolutio. Hear us, Lord Jesus Christ, and have mercy on your servants: You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Benedictióne perpétua benedícat nos Pater ætérnus.

Benedictio. May the eternal Father bless us with his everlasting blessing.

De libro Génesis

From the Book of Genesis

Gen 7:1-4

Gen 7:1-4

1 And the Lord said to him: 'Enter the ark, you and all your house. For I have seen you to be just in my sight, within this generation.
2 From all the clean animals, take seven and seven, the male and the female. Yet truly, from animals that are unclean, take two and two, the male and the female.
3 But also from the birds of the air, take seven and seven, the male and the female, so that offspring may be saved upon the face of the whole earth.
4 For from that point, and after seven days, I will rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights. And I will wipe away every substance that I have made, from the surface of the earth.'

On that very day Noah entered the ark with his sons,

Uxor illíus et uxóres filiórum eius.

his wife and the wives of his sons.

All things upon the earth were destroyed, but Noah alone remained, and those who were with him in the ark.

Uxor illíus et uxóres filiórum eius.

Gen 7:5; 7:10-12

Gen 7:5; 7:10-12

5 Therefore, Noah did all things just as the Lord had commanded him.
10 And when seven days had passed, the waters of the great flood inundated the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of the life of Noah, in the second month, in the seventeenth day of the month, all the fountains of the great abyss were released, and the floodgates of heaven were opened.
12 And rain came upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

The Lord remembered Noah, he brought a wind over the earth, and the waters abated:

Et prohíbitæ sunt plúviæ de cælis.

And the rains from heaven were restrained.

And the waters returned from the earth going and coming, and they began to diminish after one hundred and fifty days.

Et prohíbitæ sunt plúviæ de cælis.

And the rains from heaven were restrained.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad gáudia paradísi perdúcat nos misericórdia Christi.

14 They and every animal according to its kind, and all the cattle in their kind, and everything that moves upon the earth in their kind, and every flying thing according to its kind, all the birds and all that can fly.

8:2a O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!
8:2b For your magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.
8:3 Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have perfected praise, because of your enemies, * so that you may destroy the enemy and the revenger.
8:4 For I will behold your heavens, the works of your fingers: * the moon and the stars, which you have founded.
8:5 What is man, that you are mindful of him? * or the son of man, that you visit him?
8:6 You reduced him to a little less than the Angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor: * and you have set him over the works of your hands.
8:8 You have subjected all things under his feet, * all sheep and oxen, and in addition the beasts of the field.
8:9 The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, * which pass through the paths of the sea.
8:10 O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!

Amen.

Ant. In univérsa terra glória et honóre coronásti eum.

Ant. In all the earth you have crowned him with glory and honor.

Posuísti, Dómine, super caput eius.

You have placed upon his head, O Lord.

Corónam de lápide pretióso.

A crown of precious stone.

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

Cap. 16

Ignatius, third bishop of the Church of Antioch after the Apostle Peter, when Trajan stirred up a persecution, was condemned to the beasts and sent in chains to Rome. And when, sailing, he had come to Smyrna, where Polycarp, a hearer of John, was bishop, he wrote one letter to the Ephesians, another to the Magnesians, a third to the Trallians, a fourth to the Romans. And departing thence, he wrote to the Philadelphians, and to the Smyrnaeans, and a personal letter to Polycarp, commending to him the Church of Antioch; in which he also sets down testimony concerning the Gospel, which I have recently translated, regarding the person of Christ.

Ædificávit Noë altáre Dómino, ófferens super illud holocáustum: odoratúsque est Dóminus odórem suavitátis, et benedíxit ei, dicens:

Noah built an altar to the Lord, and offered upon it a burnt offering: and the Lord smelled a sweet fragrance, and blessed him, saying:

Créscite, et multiplicámini, et repléte terram.

Increase and multiply, and fill the earth.

Behold, I will establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you.

Créscite, et multiplicámini, et repléte terram.

Increase and multiply, and fill the earth.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.

Benedictio. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

It seems fitting, since we have made mention of so great a man, to set down a few words from the letter he wrote to the Romans: From Syria to Rome I fight with wild beasts by sea and land, by night and by day, bound with ten leopards — that is, with soldiers who guard me; and the more kindness one does them, the worse they become. Yet their iniquity is my instruction; but not for that reason am I justified. Would that I might come to the beasts that are prepared for me; and I pray that they may be swift in making an end of me. And I will entice them to devour me, lest, as has happened with some other Martyrs, they will not dare to touch the body. Forgive me, little children; I know well what is for my good.

Ponam arcum meum in núbibus cæli, dixit Dóminus ad Noë:

I will set my bow in the clouds of heaven, said the Lord to Noah:

And I will be mindful of my covenant which I have made with you.

Cumque obdúxero núbibus cælum, apparébit arcus meus in núbibus.

And when I cover the sky with clouds, my bow shall appear in the clouds.

And I will be mindful of my covenant which I have made with you.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.

Now I begin to be a disciple of Christ, desiring nothing of those things which are seen, in order that I may find Jesus Christ. Fire, cross, beasts, breaking of bones, division of members, and crushing of the whole body, and all the torments of the devil — let them come upon me, only that I may gain Christ Jesus.

Per memetípsum iurávi, dicit Dóminus, non adíciam ultra aquas dilúvii super terram: pacti mei recordábor,

I have sworn by myself, says the Lord; I will add no more waters of a flood upon the earth; I will be mindful of my covenant,

Ut non perdam aquis dilúvii omnem carnem.

So that I will not destroy all flesh with the waters of a flood.

I will set my arc in the clouds, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Ut non perdam aquis dilúvii omnem carnem.

So that I will not destroy all flesh with the waters of a flood.

10:3 For behold, the sinners have bent their bow, they have prepared their arrows in the quiver, * so as to shoot arrows in the dark at the upright of heart.

10:5a The Lord is in his holy temple, * the Lord's throne is in heaven.

14:5b Qui facit hæc: * non movébitur in ætérnum.

14:1 O Lord, who will dwell in your tabernacle? * or who will rest on your holy mountain?
14:2 He who walks without blemish, * and who works justice:
14:3a He who speaks the truth in his heart, * who has not acted deceitfully with his tongue:
14:3b Nor has he done evil to his neighbor, * and has not taken up a reproach against his neighbors.

20:2 O Lord, in your strength the king shall rejoice: * and in your salvation he shall exult exceedingly.
20:3 You have given him his heart's desire: * and have not withheld from him the will of his lips.
20:4 For you have gone before him with the blessings of sweetness: * you have set upon his head a crown of precious stone.
20:5 He asked life of you: * and you gave him length of days for ever and ever.
20:6 Great is his glory in your salvation: * glory and great majesty you will lay upon him.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Ioánnem

A Reading from the holy Gospel according to John

Ioannes 12:24-26

Ioannes 12:24-26

In illo témpore: Dixit Iesus discípulis suis: Amen, amen dico vobis, nisi granum fruménti cadens in terram, mortuum fúerit, ipsum solum manet. Et réliqua.

Homilía sancti Augustíni Epíscopi

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. And so forth.

A Homily of Saint Augustine, Bishop

Tract. 51 in Ioánn., sub med.

Tract. 51 in Ioánn., sub med.

Item alio modo: Qui amat ánimam suam, perdet eam; noli amare, ne perdas; noli amare in hac vita, ne perdas in æterna vita.

The Lord Jesus himself was the grain that was to be mortified and multiplied: mortified by the unbelief of the Jews, multiplied by the faith of the nations. And now, exhorting them to follow in the footsteps of his Passion, he says: Whoever loves his soul will lose it. This can be understood in two ways. Whoever loves, will lose; that is, if you love, you will lose. If you desire to hold on to life in Christ, do not fear death for Christ. Likewise in another way: Whoever loves his soul will lose it; do not love it, lest you lose it; do not love it in this life, lest you lose it in eternal life.

God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them:

Créscite, et multiplicámini, et repléte terram.

Increase and multiply, and fill the earth.

Behold, I will establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you.

Créscite, et multiplicámini, et repléte terram.

Increase and multiply, and fill the earth.

Lectio 8

Reading 8

Yet what I said later seems more to have an evangelical sense; for it follows: And he who hates his soul in this world keeps it unto eternal life. Therefore, what was said above, He who loves, is to be understood as: he who loves in this world will in any case lose it; but he who hates in this world will in any case keep it unto eternal life. A great and wondrous saying, how for a man there can be love for his soul such that it perishes, and hatred such that it does not perish. If you have loved it badly, then you have hated it; if you have hated it well, then you have loved it. Blessed are they who have hated it by keeping it, lest they lose it by loving it.

Behold, I will establish my covenant with you and with your seed after you:

Neque erit deínceps dilúvium díssipans terram.

Neither shall there be henceforth a flood to destroy the earth.

I will set my arc in the clouds, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Neque erit deínceps dilúvium díssipans terram.

Neither shall there be henceforth a flood to destroy the earth.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

Lectio 9

Reading 9

But take care lest it should steal upon you that you wish to destroy yourself, by understanding thus what you ought to hate in this world: your soul. For from this notion certain wicked and perverse men, more cruel to themselves and more criminal than ordinary murderers, give themselves to the flames, plunge themselves in the waters, dash themselves headlong and perish. This Christ did not teach; indeed, he also replied to the devil when he suggested throwing himself headlong: Get behind me, Satan: it is written, You shall not tempt the Lord your God. But to Peter he said, signifying by what death he was to glorify God: when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, another will gird you and lead you where you do not wish. In which words he made it clear enough that one who follows in the footsteps of Christ is not to be slain by himself, but by another.

When a very great crowd was coming together to Jesus, and people were hastening to him from the cities, he spoke by way of parable:

Exiit qui séminat, semináre semen suum.

A sower went out to sow his seed.

Et dum séminat, áliud cécidit in terram bonam, et ortum fecit fructum céntuplum.

And as he sowed, some fell on good ground and brought forth fruit a hundredfold.

Exiit qui séminat, semináre semen suum.

A sower went out to sow his seed.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
