77:21 Therefore, the Lord heard, and he was dismayed: * and a fire was kindled within Jacob, and an anger ascended into Israel.
77:22 For they neither put their trust in God: * nor did they hope in his salvation:

77:24 And he rained down manna upon them to eat: * and he gave them the bread of heaven.

1 If I were to speak in the language of men, or of Angels, yet not have charity, I would be like a clanging bell or a crashing cymbal.
2 And if I have prophecy, and learn every mystery, and obtain all knowledge, and possess all faith, so that I could move mountains, yet not have charity, then I am nothing.
3 And if I distribute all my goods in order to feed the poor, and if I hand over my body to be burned, yet not have charity, it offers me nothing.

4 Charity is patient, is kind. Charity does not envy, does not act wrongly, is not inflated.

6 Charity does not rejoice over iniquity, but rejoices in truth.
7 Charity suffers all, believes all, hopes all, endures all.
8 Charity is never torn away, even if prophecies pass away, or languages cease, or knowledge is destroyed.
9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part.
10 But when the perfect arrives, the imperfect passes away.

Paul, the founder and master of hermits, born in lower Thebaid, was fifteen years of age when he was bereft of his parents. He afterward withdrew into a cave in the desert to avoid the persecution of Decius and Valerian, and to serve God more freely: where, a palm tree providing him with food and clothing, he lived until his one hundred and thirteenth year, at which time he was visited by the ninety-year-old Anthony at God's prompting. When these two greeted one another by their own names — not having known each other before — and were talking at length of the Kingdom of God, a raven that had always before brought Paul a half loaf of bread brought a whole one.

After the raven's departure, Paul said: "Come, the Lord has sent us our meal — truly he is holy, truly merciful. Sixty years have already passed since I receive each day half a loaf of bread; now for your coming Christ has doubled the ration for his soldiers." Therefore, giving thanks, they took their food at the fountain; and when they had refreshed themselves for a little while, and had given thanks to God in the customary manner, they spent the night in the divine praises. At dawn, Paul warned Anthony of the death that was now at hand for him, and urged him to bring the cloak which he had received from Athanasius, to wrap his body in. As Anthony was returning from this journey, he saw the soul of Paul ascending to heaven amid the choirs of Angels, amid the companies of Prophets and Apostles.
