1 Propter quod inexcusábilis es, o homo omnis qui iúdicas. In quo enim iúdicas álterum, teípsum condémnas: éadem enim agis quæ iúdicas.
2 Scimus enim quóniam iudícium Dei est secúndum veritátem in eos qui tália agunt.
3 Exístimas autem hoc, o homo, qui iúdicas eos qui tália agunt, et facis ea, quia tu effúgies iudícium Dei?
4 an divítias bonitátis eius, et patiéntiæ, et longanimitátis contémnis? Ignóras quóniam benígnitas Dei ad pœniténtiam te addúcit?

1 For this reason, O man, each one of you who judges is inexcusable. For by that which you judge another, you condemn yourself.
2 For we know that the judgment of God is in accord with truth against those who do such things.
3 But, O man, when you judge those who do such things as you yourself also do, do you think that you will escape the judgment of God?
4 Or do you despise the riches of his goodness and patience and forbearance? Do you not know that the kindness of God is calling you to repentance?

On all days and at all times, dearest ones, the birth of the Lord and Savior from the Virgin Mother presents itself to the minds of the faithful who meditate on divine things, so that the mind, raised up to the confession of its author — whether engaged in the groan of supplication, or in the exultation of praise, or in the offering of sacrifice — may touch nothing more frequently or more confidently in spiritual contemplation than this: that God, the Son of God, begotten of the coeternal Father, was also born by human birth. But no day impresses upon us this adorable nativity, celebrated in heaven and on earth, more than today's, and as a new light shines forth in the elements, it sets before our senses the brightness of the wondrous sacrament. For not only does the colloquy of the angel Gabriel with the astonished Mary return to memory, but in some manner to our very sight: the conception from the Holy Spirit, so wondrously promised and so wondrously believed.

Therefore, the very greatness of the gift bestowed demands from us a reverence worthy of its splendor. For this reason, as the blessed Apostle teaches, we have received not the spirit of this world, but the Spirit which is of God, that we may know the things that are given to us by God; which Spirit is honored piously only if what he himself bestows is offered back to him. What then in the treasury of the Lord's generosity can we find so fitting to honor the present feast as peace, which at the birth of the Lord was first proclaimed by the angelic chorus? For it is peace that begets sons of God, the nurse of love and mother of unity, the rest of the blessed and the dwelling of eternity; whose proper work and special benefit it is to join to God those whom it separates from the world.

You see the shepherds hasten; for no one seeks Christ with laziness. You see the shepherds believed the Angel: and will you not believe the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, the Angels, the Prophets, and the Apostles? See how pointedly Scripture weighs the significance of each word. They hasten, it says, to see the Word. For when the flesh of the Lord is seen, the Word is seen, which is the Son.

Let this not seem to you a slight example of faith on account of the lowliness of the shepherds' station. Surely the lowlier they are in wisdom, the more precious in faith. The Lord did not seek out gymnasia filled with choirs of the wise, but a simple people, who would not know how to embellish and color what they heard. For simplicity is sought, not ambition.

Do not think lightly of the words of the shepherds as though they were of little worth. For from the shepherds Mary gathers the testimony of faith; from the shepherds the people are gathered for reverence toward God. And all who heard marveled at the things that were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart. Let us learn in all things the chastity of the holy Virgin, who, no less modest in speech than in body, pondered the proofs of faith within her heart.
