Ier 31:15-17

15 Hæc dicit Dóminus: Vox in excélso audíta est lamentatiónis, luctus, et fletus Rachel plorántis fílios suos, et noléntis consolári super eis, quia non sunt.
16 Hæc dicit Dóminus: Quiéscat vox tua a plorátu, et óculi tui a lácrimis: quia est merces óperi tuo, ait Dóminus: et reverténtur de terra inimíci.
17 Et est spes novíssimis tuis, ait Dóminus: et reverténtur fílii ad términos suos.

15 Thus says the Lord: A voice has been heard on high, of lamentation, mourning, and weeping; of Rachel crying for her sons and refusing to be consoled over them, because they are not.
16 Thus says the Lord: Let your voice cease from crying and your eyes from tears. For there is a reward for your work, says the Lord. And they will return from the land of the enemy.
17 And there is hope for your very end, says the Lord. And the sons will return to their own borders.

℟ The hundred and forty-four thousand who were purchased from the earth, these are they who were not defiled with women:

Vírgines enim permansérunt, ídeo regnant cum Deo, et Agnus Dei cum illis.

For they remained virgins, and therefore they reign with God, and the Lamb of God is with them.

℣ Isti sunt qui venérunt ex magna tribulatióne, et lavérunt stolas suas in sánguine Agni.

℣ These are they who have come out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb.

20 Si fílius honorábilis mihi Ephraim, si puer delicátus: quia ex quo locútus sum de eo, adhuc recordábor eius.

18 Listening, I heard Ephraim going into captivity: 'You have chastised me, and I was instructed, like a young untamed bull. Convert me, and I shall be converted. For you are the Lord my God.
19 For after you converted me, I did penance. And after you revealed to me, I struck my thigh. I am confounded and ashamed. For I have endured the disgrace of my youth.'
20 Certainly, Ephraim is an honorable son to me; surely, he is a tender child. For I will still remember him, as in the time when I first spoke about him. Because my heart is stirred up over him, surely I will take pity on him, says the Lord.

℟ Why do you not avenge our blood? And they received a divine answer: Wait yet a little while, until the number of your brethren is complete.

22 How long will you be absorbed in delights, O wandering daughter? For the Lord has created something new upon the earth: a woman will encompass a man.
23 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Still they will speak this word in the land of Judah, and in its cities, when I will convert their captivity: 'May the Lord bless you, the beauty of justice, the holy mountain.'

Et ídeo cum summa exsultatióne gáudeat terra, cæléstium mílitum et tantárum parens fecúnda virtútum. Ecce profánus hostis nunquam beátis párvulis tantum prodésse potuísset obséquio, quantum prófuit ódio. Nam, sicut sacratíssimum præséntis diéi festum maniféstat, quantum in beátos párvulos iníquitas abundávit, tantum in eis grátia benedictiónis refúdit.

Today, dearest brethren, we honor the nativity of those infants whom the text of the Gospel declares were slain by Herod, that most cruel king. And therefore let the earth rejoice with the greatest exultation, as the fruitful parent of so many heavenly soldiers and such great virtues. Behold, the profane enemy could never have benefited those blessed little ones so much by his service as he profited them by his hatred. For, as the most sacred feast of the present day shows, the more iniquity abounded toward those blessed little ones, the more it poured upon them the grace of blessing.

Those whom the impiety of Herod tore from their mothers' nursing breasts; who are rightly called the flowers of the Martyrs, whom, springing up in the midst of the cold of unbelief like the first bursting buds of the Church, a certain frost of persecution nipped.

When he took the Child and his Mother to pass over into Egypt, he took them by night and in darkness: because he left the night of ignorance to the unbelievers from whom he departed. But when he returns to Judea, neither night nor darkness is mentioned in the Gospel: because at the end of the world the Jews, receiving the faith as they welcome Christ returning from Egypt, will be enlightened.

Ut adimplerétur quod dictum est a Dómino per prophétam dicéntem: Ex Ægýpto vocávi Fílium meum. Respóndeant, qui Hebræórum volúminum dénegant veritátem, ubi hoc in Septuagínta legátur interprétibus. Quod cum non invénerint, nos eis dicémus, in Osée prophéta scriptum, sicut et exemplária probáre possunt, quæ nuper edídimus.

That what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying: Out of Egypt I have called my Son. Let those answer who deny the truth of the Hebrew books as to where this is to be read in the Seventy translators. When they cannot find it, we shall tell them that it is written in the prophet Hosea, as the copies we have recently published can confirm.

℟ Vidi sub altáre Dei ánimas interfectórum propter verbum Dei quod habébant, et clara voce dicébant:

Tunc adimplétum est, quod dictum est per Ieremíam prophétam dicéntem: Vox in Rama audíta est, plorátus et ululátus multus, Rachel plorans fílios suos. De Rachel natus est Béniamin, in cuius tribu non est Béthlehem. Quǽritur ergo, quómodo Rachel fílios Iudæ, id est Béthlehem, quasi suos ploret. Respondébimus bréviter, quia sepúlta sit iuxta Béthlehem in Ephrata; et ex matérno corpúsculi hospítio matris nomen accéperit; sive quóniam Iuda et Béniamin duæ tribus iunctæ erant, et Heródes præcéperat non solum in Béthlehem intérfici púeros, sed et in ómnibus fínibus eius.

Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying: A voice was heard in Rama, weeping and much wailing, Rachel weeping for her children. Now Benjamin was born of Rachel, and Bethlehem is not in the tribe of Benjamin. It is therefore asked how Rachel weeps for the sons of Judah — that is, those of Bethlehem — as though for her own. We shall answer briefly: because she was buried near Bethlehem in Ephrata, and from the hospice of her mother's body the name of mother was attached; or because Judah and Benjamin were two joined tribes, and Herod had commanded that the children be slain not only in Bethlehem but in all its borders.

℟ Isti, qui amícti sunt stolis albis, qui sunt, et unde venérunt? Et dixit mihi:

℟ These ones who are clothed in white robes, who are they, and where did they come from? And he said to me:

Hi sunt, qui venérunt de tribulatióne magna, et lavérunt stolas suas, et dealbavérunt eas in sánguine Agni.

These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and have made them white by the blood of the Lamb.
