Hymnus
Iam lucis orto sídere,
Deum precémur súpplices,
Ut in diúrnis áctibus
Nos servet a nocéntibus.
Linguam refrénans témperet,
Ne litis horror ínsonet:
Visum fovéndo cóntegat,
Ne vanitátes háuriat.
Sint pura cordis íntima,
Absístat et vecórdia;
Carnis terat supérbiam
Potus cibíque párcitas.
Ut, cum dies abscésserit,
Noctémque sors redúxerit,
Mundi per abstinéntiam
Ipsi canámus glóriam.
Deo Patri sit glória,
Eiúsque soli Fílio,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito,
Nunc et per omne sǽculum.
Amen.
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.
May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.
May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.
That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.
All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.
Amen.

22:6 Et misericórdia tua subsequétur me * ómnibus diébus vitæ meæ:
22:6 Et ut inhábitem in domo Dómini, * in longitúdinem diérum.
22:1 The Lord governs me, and I shall want nothing: * in a place of pasture there he has settled me.
22:2 He has led me up beside the waters of refreshment: * he has converted my soul.
22:3 He has led me on the paths of justice, * for his name's sake.
22:4 For though I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evils: * for you are with me.
22:4 Your rod and your staff: * these have comforted me.
22:5 You have prepared a table before me * against those who trouble me.
22:5 You have anointed my head with oil: * and my inebriating chalice, how excellent it is!

71:7 Oriétur in diébus eius iustítia, et abundántia pacis: * donec auferátur luna.
71:8 Et dominábitur a mari usque ad mare: * et a flúmine usque ad términos orbis terrárum.
71:2 Give your judgment, O God, to the king: * and your justice to the king's son:
71:2 To judge your people with justice, * and your poor with judgment.
71:3 Let the mountains take up peace for the people: * and the hills, justice.
71:4 He will judge the poor of the people, and he will bring salvation to the sons of the poor: * and he will humble the false accuser.
71:5 And he will remain, with the sun and before the moon, * from generation to generation.
71:6 He will descend like rain upon fleece: * and like showers showering upon the earth.
71:7 In his days, justice will rise, with abundance of peace: * until the moon is taken away.
71:8 And he will rule from sea to sea: * and from the river to the limits of the whole world.

(Hic autem in priori voce dicitur, et in tono passionis:) Natívitas Dómini nostri Iesu Christi secúndum carnem.
The Twenty-Fifth of December
In the year from the creation of the world, when in the beginning God created heaven and earth, five thousand one hundred and ninety-nine; from the flood, in the year two thousand nine hundred and fifty-seven; from the birth of Abraham, in the year two thousand and fifteen; from Moses and the departure of the people of Israel from Egypt, in the year one thousand five hundred and ten; from the anointing of David as King, in the year one thousand and thirty-two; in the sixty-fifth week, according to the prophecy of Daniel; in the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; from the founding of the city of Rome, in the year seven hundred and fifty-two; in the forty-second year of the reign of the Emperor Octavian Augustus, when the whole world was at peace, in the sixth age of the world — (here the voice is raised, and all kneel) Jesus Christ, the eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to consecrate the world by his most gracious coming, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit, and nine months having elapsed since his conception: he is born in Bethlehem of Judah of the Virgin Mary, made Man. (Here, however, the former tone is resumed, and in the tone of the Passion:) The Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh.
Quod sequitur, legitur in tono Lectionis consueto; et surgunt omnes.
What follows is read in the usual tone of a Lesson; and all rise.
On the same day, the birthday of Saint Anastasia, who, in the time of Diocletian, first endured a harsh and cruel imprisonment at the hands of her husband Publius, in which she was greatly consoled and strengthened by Chrysogonus, a Confessor of Christ; then, worn down by long confinement under Florus, governor of Illyricum, she was at last bound hand and foot to stakes with a fire kindled around her, in which she completed her martyrdom on the island of Palmaria, to which she had been deported together with two hundred men and seventy women, who celebrated their martyrdom by various forms of death.
At Barcelona, in Spain, likewise the birthday of Saint Peter Nolasco, Confessor, who was the Founder of the Order of the Blessed Mary of Mercy for the Redemption of Captives, and was renowned for virtue and miracles. His feast, however, is kept on the Twenty-eighth of January.
At Rome, in the cemetery of Apronianus, Saint Eugenia, Virgin, daughter of the blessed Martyr Philip, who, in the time of the Emperor Gallienus, after very many notable acts of virtue, after sacred choirs of Virgins gathered for Christ, suffered long under the city prefect Niketios, and was at last put to death by the sword.
At Nicomedia, the passion of many thousands of Martyrs, who had gathered for the Lord's Day at Christmas; the Emperor Diocletian ordered the doors of the church to be shut and fire to be prepared all around, and a tripod with incense to be placed before the entrance, and a herald to cry out in a loud voice that those who wished to escape the fire should come outside and offer incense to Jupiter; and when all replied with one voice that they would more gladly die for Christ, the fire was kindled and they were consumed, and thus merited on that day to be born in heaven, on which Christ once was pleased to be born on earth for the salvation of the world.
