8 But you, O Israel, are my servant, O Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of my friend Abraham.

11 Behold, all who fight against you shall be confounded and ashamed. They will be as if they did not exist, and the men who contradict you will perish.
12 You will seek them, and you will not find them. The men who rebel against you will be as if they did not exist. And the men who make war against you will be like something that has been consumed.
13 For I am the Lord your God. I take you by your hand, and I say to you: Do not be afraid. I have helped you.

The Apostle Thomas, who was also called Didymus, a Galilean, after receiving the Holy Spirit went forth into many provinces to preach the Gospel of Christ: he delivered the precepts of Christian faith and life to the Parthians, Medes, Persians, Hyrcanians, and Bactrians. Proceeding at last to India, he instructed its people in the Christian religion. There, having finally stirred the admiration of all by the holiness of his life and teaching and by the greatness of his miracles, and having aroused love for Jesus Christ, he kindled all the more the wrath of that people's king, a worshipper of idols; condemned by his sentence and pierced with spears, he crowned the honor of his apostolate with the crown of martyrdom at Calamina.

These adornments Paul enumerates, saying: To one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith in the same Spirit, to another the grace of healing in the one Spirit, to another the working of mighty deeds, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of utterances. We know what kind of teachers of the holy Church they were before the coming of that Spirit; and after his coming, we behold of what strength they became.

Non hoc casu, sed divína dispensatióne gestum est. Egit namque miro modo supérna cleméntia, ut discípulus ille dúbitans, dum in magístro suo vúlnera palpáret carnis, in nobis vúlnera sanáret infidelitátis. Plus enim nobis Thomæ infidélitas ad fidem, quam fides credéntium discipulórum prófuit; quia dum ille ad fidem palpándo redúcitur, nostra mens, omni dubitatióne postpósita, in fide solidátur.

What, dearest brothers, what do you observe in all this? Do you think it happened by chance that that chosen disciple was absent at the time, and then coming afterward he heard, hearing he doubted, doubting he touched, touching he believed? This did not happen by chance, but by divine dispensation. For the supreme clemency acted in a wondrous way, so that the doubting disciple, while touching the wounds of the flesh in his Master, might heal the wounds of unbelief in us. Thomas's unbelief was more profitable to our faith than the faith of the believing disciples; because, as he is brought back to faith through touching, our mind is strengthened in faith, with all doubt set aside.

So indeed the Lord permitted his disciple to doubt after his Resurrection, yet did not abandon him in his doubt; just as before his birth he willed Mary to have a husband who nevertheless did not come to know her in marriage. For thus the doubting and touching disciple became a witness of the true Resurrection, just as the bridegroom of his mother had been the guardian of her inviolate virginity. He touched him, and exclaimed: My Lord and my God. Jesus said to him: Because you have seen me, you have believed. Since the Apostle Paul says, Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen; it is clearly evident that faith is the evidence of things that cannot be seen. For the things that are seen already have not faith, but knowledge.

When Thomas saw, then, when he touched — why is it said to him: Because you have seen me, you have believed? But he saw one thing and believed another. For divinity could not be seen by a mortal man. He saw a man, therefore, and confessed God, saying: My Lord and my God. He believed by seeing, who, by contemplating the true man, cried out to this God whom he could not see. Most joyful is what follows: Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. In that sentence we ourselves are surely specially marked out, who hold in mind him whom we have not seen in the flesh. We are specially marked out; but only if we follow up our faith with works. For he truly believes who enacts by his deeds what he believes.
