1 In die illa cantábitur cánticum istud in terra Iuda: Urbs fortitúdinis nostræ Sion Salvátor, ponétur in ea murus et antemurále.
2 Aperíte portas et ingrediátur gens iusta, custódiens veritátem.
3 Vetus error ábiit: servábis pacem: pacem, quia in te sperávimus.
4 Sperástis in Dómino in sǽculis ætérnis, in Dómino Deo forti, in perpétuum.
5 Quia incurvábit habitántes in excélso, civitátem sublímem humiliábit. Humiliábit eam usque ad terram, détrahet eam usque ad púlverem.
6 Conculcábit eam pes, pedes páuperis, gressus egenórum.

1 In that day, this canticle will be sung in the land of Judah. Within it will be set the city of our strength: Zion, a savior, a wall with a bulwark.
2 Open the gates, and let the just people who guard the truth enter.
3 The old error has gone away. You will serve peace: peace, for we have hoped in you.
4 You have trusted in the Lord for all eternity, in the Lord God almighty forever.
5 For he will bend down those living in the heights. He will bring low the lofty city. He will lower it, even to the ground. He will tear it down, even to the dust.
6 The foot will tread it down: the feet of the poor, the steps of the indigent.

9 Anima mea desiderávit te in nocte, sed et spíritu meo in præcórdiis meis de mane vigilábo ad te. Cum féceris iudícia tua in terra, iustítiam discent habitatóres orbis.
10 Misereámur ímpio, et non discet iustítiam: in terra sanctórum iníqua gessit, et non vidébit glóriam Dómini.

7 The path of the just is upright; the difficult path of the just is right to walk in.
8 And in the path of your judgments, O Lord, we have endured for you. Your name and your remembrance are the desire of the soul.
9 My soul has desired you in the night. But I will also watch for you with my spirit, in my inmost heart, from the morning. When you accomplish your judgments upon the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn justice.
10 Let us take pity on the impious one, but he will not learn justice. In the land of the holy ones, he has done iniquity, and so he will not see the glory of the Lord.

℟ Béthlehem cívitas Dei summi, ex te éxiet Dominátor Israël, et egréssus eius sicut a princípio diérum æternitátis, et magnificábitur in médio univérsæ terræ:

What the logic of the season and the custom of our devotion urges, we proclaim to you, dearest ones, with pastoral solicitude: that the fast of the tenth month is to be celebrated — in which, for the consummated reception of all the fruits of the earth, a most worthy libation of abstinence is offered to God, their most generous giver. For what can be more efficacious than fasting? By its observance we draw near to God, and resisting the devil, we overcome pleasing vices.

From the words of this reading, dearest brothers, the humility of John is commended to us: who, though he was of such great virtue that he could have been believed to be the Christ, chose to stand firmly in himself, lest he be carried beyond himself in vain by human opinion. For he confessed and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ. But he who said I am not denied plainly what he was not, yet he did not deny what he was: so that by speaking the truth he might become a member of him whose name he would not fraudulently usurp for himself. When, therefore, he refused to claim the name of Christ, he became a member of Christ: because, while he strove humbly to acknowledge his own weakness, he merited truly to obtain that one's exaltedness.

But when, from another reading, the sentence of our Redeemer comes to mind, a very complex question is raised for us from the words of this reading. For in another place the Lord, questioned by the disciples about the coming of Elijah, answered: Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished; and if you wish to know, John himself is Elijah. But when John was asked, he says: I am not Elijah. What is this, dearest brethren, that what the Truth affirms, the prophet of the Truth denies? For these are very contrary to each other: He himself is: and, I am not. How then is he a prophet of truth, if he is not in agreement with the words of that same Truth?

But if truth itself is subtly inquired into, it is found that what sounds contrary to itself is not contrary. For the Angel says to Zechariah concerning John: He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah. He is said to be coming in the spirit and power of Elijah for this reason, that just as Elijah will precede the second coming of the Lord, so John preceded the first. As that one is to be the precursor of the Judge, so this one was made the precursor of the Redeemer. John therefore was Elijah in spirit, but was not Elijah in person. What therefore the Lord affirms of the spirit, this John denies of the person.
