Isa 11:1-4

1 Et egrediétur virga de radíce Iesse, et flos de radíce eius ascéndet.
2 Et requiéscet super eum Spíritus Dómini: spíritus sapiéntiæ et intelléctus, spíritus consílii et fortitúdinis, spíritus sciéntiæ et pietátis;
3 Et replébit eum spíritus timóris Dómini: non secúndum visiónem oculórum iudicábit, neque secúndum audítum áurium árguet:
4 Sed iudicábit in iustítia páuperes, et árguet in æquitáte pro mansuétis terræ:

1 And a rod will go forth from the root of Jesse, and a flower will ascend from his root.
2 And the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety.
3 And he will be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord. He will not judge according to the sight of the eyes, nor reprove according to the hearing of the ears.
4 Instead, he will judge the poor with justice, and he will reprove the meek of the earth with fairness. And he will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and he will slay the impious with the spirit of his lips.

℟ Ierúsalem, cito véniet salus tua: Quare mœróre consúmeris? numquid consiliárius non est tibi, quia innovávit te dolor?

℟ Jerusalem, your salvation will come quickly: Why are you consumed with sorrow? Is there no counselor for you, since pain has renewed you?

Usque ad principium visiónis, vel pónderis Babylónis, quod vidit Isaías, fílius Amos, omnis hæc prophetía de Christo est: quam per partes vólumus explanare, ne simul propósita atque disserta lectóris confundat memóriam. Virgam et florem de radíce Iesse ipsum Dóminum Iudæi interpretántur: quod scilicet in virga regnántis poténtia, in flore pulchritúdo monstrétur.

And a rod will go forth from the root of Jesse. From here to the beginning of the vision, or the burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw, this entire prophecy is about Christ: which we wish to explain in parts, lest, set forth and expounded all at once, it confuse the reader's memory. The Jews interpret the rod and the flower from the root of Jesse as the Lord himself: namely, that in the rod the power of the one who reigns is shown, and in the flower his beauty.

For it seemed foolish to men that the Author of life should die for men; and from that very thing man took scandal against him from which he ought rather to have become even more his debtor. For God deserves all the more to be honored by men, the more he has taken upon himself, for their sake, things that were beneath him.
