Mater Dafrosa, et filiæ primum conclusæ domi, ut inedia conficerentur; mox relegata mater extra Urbem capite plexa est. Bibiana, a Roman Virgin, born of noble family, was made nobler still by the Christian faith. For her father Flavian, a former prefect, was deported to the Taurine waters under the most impious tyrant Julian the Apostate, branded with the marks of slaves, and died as a martyr. Her mother Dafrosa and her daughters were first confined to their home to be worn down by hunger; then the mother was banished outside the City and beheaded. Their pious parents now dead, Bibiana and her sister Demetria were stripped of all their goods; Apronianus, prefect of the City, greedy for money, persecuted the sisters; and when he saw that they, utterly destitute of all human help yet miraculously fed by God who gives food to the hungry, had become more lively and vigorous, he was greatly astonished.

Yet Apronianus urges them to worship the gods of the nations, promising that they would thereby recover their lost wealth, the favor of the emperor, and their distinguished betrothal. If they refused, he threatened them with prison, flogging, and the axe. But they, yielding to neither flattery nor threats from the right faith, and ready rather to die than to be defiled by the customs of the pagans, with the utmost constancy expressed their abhorrence of the praetor's impiety. Wherefore Demetria, falling suddenly before the eyes of Bibiana, died in the Lord; and Bibiana was handed over to be corrupted by a most cunning woman named Rufina, who had been trained from the cradle to preserve the Christian laws and the unsullied flower of virginity. Stronger than herself, she overcame the snares of that woman and foiled the cunning of the praetor.

Rufina making no progress — who, besides her deceitful words, afflicted her daily with blows to move her from her holy purpose — the praetor, frustrated in his hope and burning with anger at having spent his efforts in vain on Bibiana, ordered his lictors to strip her, bind her hands to a column, and beat her with leaded scourges until she breathed her last. Her sacred body lay for two days exposed to dogs in the forum of Taurus, unharmed, however, and preserved by divine providence; it was then buried by night by the priest John near the tomb of her sister and mother at the Licinian palace, where to this day there stands the church dedicated to God under the name of holy Bibiana, which Urban the Eighth restored after the bodies of the holy Bibiana, Demetria, and Dafrosa had been found in it and placed beneath the high altar.

Our Lord and Redeemer, desiring to find us prepared, foretells the evils that will follow upon the aging world, so that he may restrain us from love of it. He makes known how great are the calamities that precede its approaching end: so that, if we are unwilling to fear God in tranquility, we may at least fear his judgment drawing near, worn down as we are by afflictions.

For we see already more clearly in our own times, than we read in books, nation rising against nation, and the pressure of these calamities bearing upon the lands. You know how often we have heard, from other parts of the world, that earthquakes have overwhelmed countless cities. We suffer pestilences without ceasing. As for signs in the sun and moon and stars, we have not yet clearly seen them; but from the very change in the atmosphere we already gather that they are not far off.
