Hymnus

Vírginis Proles Opiféxque Matris,
Virgo quem gessit, peperítque Virgo:
Vírginis partos cánimus decóra
Morte triúmphos.

Hæc enim palmæ dúplicis beáta
Sorte, dum gestit frágilem domáre
Córporis sexum, dómuit cruéntum
Cæde tyránnum.

Unde nec mortem, nec amíca mortis
Mille pœnárum génera expavéscens,
Sánguine effúso méruit serénum
Scándere cælum.

Huius orátu, Deus alme, nobis
Débitas pœnas scélerum remítte;
Ut tibi puro resonémus almum
Péctore carmen.

Sit decus Patri, genitǽque Proli,
Et tibi, compar utriúsque virtus,
Spíritus semper, Deus unus, omni
Témporis ævo.
Amen.

Son of a virgin, maker of thy mother,
Thou, rod and blossom from a stem unstainèd,
While we a Virgin's triumphs are rehearsing,
Hear our petition!

Lo, on thy handmaid fell a two-fold blessing,
Who, in her body vanquishing the weakness,
In that same body, grace from heaven obtaining,
Bore the world witness.

Death, nor the rending pains of death appalled her;
Bondage and torment found her undefeated:
So by the shedding of her blood attained she
Heavenly guerdon.

Fountain of mercy, hear the prayers she offers;
Purge our offences, pardon our transgressions,
So that hereafter we to thee may render
Praise with thanksgiving.

Thou, the All-Father, thou, the One-Begotten,
Thou, Holy Spirit, Three in One co-equal,
Glory be henceforth thine through all the ages,
World without ending.
Amen.

Psalmus 8

Psalm 8

8:2a O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!
8:2b For your magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.
8:3 Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have perfected praise, because of your enemies, * so that you may destroy the enemy and the revenger.
8:4 For I will behold your heavens, the works of your fingers: * the moon and the stars, which you have founded.
8:5 What is man, that you are mindful of him? * or the son of man, that you visit him?
8:6 You reduced him to a little less than the Angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor: * and you have set him over the works of your hands.
8:8 You have subjected all things under his feet, * all sheep and oxen, and in addition the beasts of the field.
8:9 The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, * which pass through the paths of the sea.
8:10 O Lord, our Lord, * how admirable is your name throughout all the earth!

Psalmus 18

Psalm 18

18:10 Timor Dómini sanctus, pérmanens in sǽculum sǽculi: * iudícia Dómini vera, iustificáta in semetípsa.
18:11 Desiderabília super aurum et lápidem pretiósum multum: * et dulcióra super mel et favum.
18:12 Étenim servus tuus custódit ea, * in custodiéndis illis retribútio multa.

18:2 The heavens describe the glory of God: * and the firmament announces the work of his hands.
18:3 Day proclaims the word to day, * and night to night imparts knowledge.
18:4 There are no speeches or conversations, * where their voices are not being heard.
18:5 Their sound has gone forth through all the earth: * and their words to the ends of the world.
18:6a He has placed his tabernacle in the sun: * and he is like a bridegroom coming out of his bedroom:
18:6b He has exulted like a giant running along the way, * (7a) his departure is from the summit of heaven:
18:7b And his course reaches all the way to its summit: * neither is there anyone who can hide himself from his heat.
18:8 The law of the Lord is immaculate, converting souls: * the testimony of the Lord is faithful, providing wisdom to little ones.
18:9 The justice of the Lord is right, rejoicing hearts: * the precepts of the Lord are brilliant, enlightening the eyes.
18:10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for all generations: * the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
18:11 Desirable beyond gold and many precious stones: * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
18:12 For, indeed, your servant keeps them, * and in keeping them, there are many rewards.
18:13 Who can understand transgression? † From my hidden faults, cleanse me, O Lord: * (14a) and from those of others, spare your servant.
18:14b If they will have no dominion over me, then I will be immaculate: * and I will be cleansed from the greatest transgression.
18:15a And the eloquence of my mouth will be so as to please: * along with the meditation of my heart in your sight always.
18:15b O Lord, my helper, * and my redeemer.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Psalmus 23

Psalm 23

23:3 Quis ascéndet in montem Dómini?
23:5 Hic accípiet benedictiónem a Dómino: * et misericórdiam a Deo, salutári suo.
23:6 Hæc est generátio quæréntium eum, * quæréntium fáciem Dei Iacob.
23:7 Attóllite portas, príncipes, vestras, et elevámini, portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.
23:8 Quis est iste Rex glóriæ? * Dóminus fortis et potens: Dóminus potens in prǽlio.
23:9 Attóllite portas, príncipes, vestras, et elevámini, portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.
23:10 Quis est iste Rex glóriæ? * Dóminus virtútum ipse est Rex glóriæ.

23:1 The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof: * the world, and all who dwell therein.
23:2 For he has founded it upon the seas: * and has prepared it upon the rivers.
23:3 Who shall ascend the mountain of the Lord? * or who shall stand in his holy place?
23:4 The innocent in hands and clean of heart, * who has not taken his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.
23:5 He shall receive a blessing from the Lord: * and mercy from God his savior.
23:6 This is the generation of those who seek him, * of those who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
23:7 Lift up your gates, O princes, and be lifted up, O eternal gates: * and the King of glory shall enter in.
23:8 Who is this King of glory? * The Lord who is strong and mighty: the Lord mighty in battle.
23:9 Lift up your gates, O princes, and be lifted up, O eternal gates: * and the King of glory shall enter in.
23:10 Who is this King of glory? * The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Ant. Revértere, revértere, Sunamítis; revértere, ut intueámur te.

Ant. Return, return, O Shulammite; return, that we may behold you.

Dóminus virtútum nobíscum.

The Lord of hosts is with us.

Suscéptor noster, Deus Iacob.

Our protector is the God of Jacob.

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us:

Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:

And lead us not into temptation:

Sed líbera nos a malo.

But deliver us from evil.

Absolutio.

Absolutio. Hear us, Lord Jesus Christ, and have mercy on your servants: You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Benedictióne perpétua benedícat nos Pater ætérnus.

Benedictio. May the eternal Father bless us with his everlasting blessing.

Incipit Sophonías Prophéta

Soph 1:1-3

Soph 1:1-3

1 Verbum Dómini, quod factum est ad Sophoníam, fílium Chusi, fílii Godolíæ, fílii Amaríæ, fílii Ezecíæ, in diébus Iosíæ, fílii Amon, regis Iudæ.
2 Cóngregans congregábo ómnia a fácie terræ, dicit Dóminus,
3 cóngregans hóminem et pecus, cóngregans volatília cæli et pisces maris; et ruínæ impiórum erunt, et dispérdam hómines a fácie terræ, dicit Dóminus.

1 The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.
2 While gathering, I will gather together all things from the face of the earth, says the Lord.
3 I will gather man and cattle; I will gather the flying things of the air and the fish of the sea. And the impious will be a catastrophe. And I will disperse men before the face of the earth, says the Lord.

Indicábo tibi, homo, quid sit bonum aut quid Dóminus requírat a te:

I will show you, O man, what is good, or what the Lord requires of you:

Fácere iudícium et iustítiam et sollícitum ambuláre cum Deo tuo.

To do judgment and justice, and to walk solicitous with your God.

Spera in Dómino, et fac bonitátem, et inhábita terram.

Hope in the Lord, and do good, and dwell in the land.

To do judgment and justice, and to walk solicitous with your God.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur.

Benedictio. May the Only Begotten Son of God be pleased to bless and assist us.

Soph 1:4-6

Soph 1:4-6

4 And I will extend my hand over Judah and over all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And I will disperse from this place the remnant of Baal, and the names of the administrators along with the priests,
5 and those who adore the military campaign over the ceiling of the sky, both those who adore and swear by the Lord, and those who swear by Melchom,
6 both those who turn aside from following after the Lord, and those who have not sought the Lord, nor inquired about him.

Angústiæ mihi sunt úndique, et quid éligam ignóro;

Anguish is upon me on every side, and I know not what to choose;

It is better for me to fall into the hands of men, than to forsake the law of my God.

For if I do this, death awaits me; but if I do not do it, I shall not escape your hands.

It is better for me to fall into the hands of men, than to forsake the law of my God.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad gáudia paradísi perdúcat nos misericórdia Christi.

Benedictio. May the mercy of Christ lead us to the joys of paradise.

Soph 1:7-9

Soph 1:7-9

7 Siléte a fácie Dómini Dei, quia iuxta est dies Dómini: quia præparávit Dóminus hóstiam, sanctificávit vocátos suos.
8 Et erit, in die hóstiæ Dómini, visitábo super príncipes, et super fílios regis, et super omnes qui indúti sunt veste peregrína;

7 Be silent before the face of the Lord God. For the day of the Lord is near; for the Lord has prepared a victim, he has sanctified those he has called.
8 And this shall be: in the day of the victim of the Lord, I will visit upon the leaders, and upon the sons of the king, and upon all who have been clothed with strange garments.
9 And I will visit upon all who enter arrogantly over the threshold in that day, those who fill the house of the Lord their God with iniquity and deceit.

Misit Dóminus Angelum suum et conclúsit ora leónum,

The Lord sent his Angel and shut the mouths of the lions,

and they did not defile me, because before him no iniquity was found in me.

Misit Deus misericórdiam suam et veritátem suam: ánimam meam erípuit de médio catulórum leónum.

God sent his mercy and his truth: he rescued my soul from the midst of lion cubs.

and they did not defile me, because before him no iniquity was found in me.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

and they did not defile me: because before him no iniquity was found in me.

47:5 For behold, the kings of the earth have been gathered together: * they have convened as one.
47:6 Such did they see, and they were astonished; they were disturbed, they were moved: * trembling took hold of them.
47:7 In that place, their pains were that of a woman in labor: * with a vehement spirit, you will crush the ships of Tarshish.
47:9 As we have heard, so we have seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: * God has founded her in eternity.
47:10 We have received your mercy, O God, * in the midst of your temple.
47:11 According to your name, O God, so does your praise reach to the ends of the earth: * your right hand is full of justice.

Bibiana virgo Romana, nobili genere nata, christiana fide nobilior fuit.

Bibiana, a Roman Virgin, born of noble family, was made nobler still by the Christian faith. For her father Flavian, a former prefect, was deported to the Taurine waters under the most impious tyrant Julian the Apostate, branded with the marks of slaves, and died as a martyr. Her mother Dafrosa and her daughters were first confined to their home to be worn down by hunger; then the mother was banished outside the City and beheaded. Their pious parents now dead, Bibiana and her sister Demetria were stripped of all their goods; Apronianus, prefect of the City, greedy for money, persecuted the sisters; and when he saw that they, utterly destitute of all human help yet miraculously fed by God who gives food to the hungry, had become more lively and vigorous, he was greatly astonished.

Ave, María, grátia plena, Dóminus tecum:

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you:

Spíritus Sanctus supervéniet in te, et virtus Altíssimi obumbrábit tibi: quod enim ex te nascétur Sanctum, vocábitur Fílius Dei.

The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you: for that which shall be born of you is Holy, and shall be called the Son of God.

Quómodo fiet istud, quóniam virum non cognósco? Et respóndens Angelus, dixit ei.

How shall this come to pass, since I know not man? And the Angel answering said to her.

The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you: for that which shall be born of you is Holy, and shall be called the Son of God.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.

Benedictio. May Christ grant us the joys of eternal life.

Suadet nihilominus Apronianus, ut venerentur deos Gentium, amissas ideo opes, imperatoris gratiam, præclarissimas nuptias consecuturæ. Si secus fecerint, minatur carceres, virgas, secures. At illæ neque blanditiis, neque minis a recta fide declinantes, paratæ potius mori, quam fœdari moribus ethnicorum, prætoris impietatem constantissime detestantur. Quare Demetria ob oculos Bibianæ repente corruens, obiit in Domino: Bibiana Rufinæ mulieri vaferrimæ seducenda traditur, quæ ab incunabulis edocta, christianas leges, et illibatum servare virginitatis florem, se ipsa fortior feminæ superavit insidias, et prætoris astus delusit.

Yet Apronianus urges them to worship the gods of the nations, promising that they would thereby recover their lost wealth, the favor of the emperor, and their distinguished betrothal. If they refused, he threatened them with prison, flogging, and the axe. But they, yielding to neither flattery nor threats from the right faith, and ready rather to die than to be defiled by the customs of the pagans, with the utmost constancy expressed their abhorrence of the praetor's impiety. Wherefore Demetria, falling suddenly before the eyes of Bibiana, died in the Lord; and Bibiana was handed over to be corrupted by a most cunning woman named Rufina, who had been trained from the cradle to preserve the Christian laws and the unsullied flower of virginity. Stronger than herself, she overcame the snares of that woman and foiled the cunning of the praetor.

Salvatórem exspectámus, Dóminum Iesum Christum,

We await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

Qui reformábit corpus humilitátis nostræ configurátum córpori claritátis suæ.

Who will refashion the body of our lowliness, conformed to the body of his glory.

Let us live soberly, and justly, and piously in this age, awaiting the blessed hope and the coming of the glory of the great God.

Qui reformábit corpus humilitátis nostræ configurátum córpori claritátis suæ.

Who will refashion the body of our lowliness, conformed to the body of his glory.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Nihil autem proficiente Rufina, quæ, præter dolosa verba, illam quotidie verberibus affligebat, ut de sancto proposito dimoveret, spe sua frustratus prætor, accensus ira, quod in Bibiana perdidisset operam, a lictoribus eam denudari, vinctisque manibus columnæ alligari, eamque plumbatis cædi iubet, donec efflaret animam. Cuius sacrum corpus obiectum canibus biduo iacuit in foro Tauri, illæsum tamen, et divinitus servatum; quod deínde Ioannes presbyter sepelivit noctu iuxta sepulcrum sororis et matris ad palatium Licinianum, ubi usque in præsens exstat ecclesia Deo, sanctæ Bibianæ nomine, dicata, quam Urbanus octavus instauravit, sanctarum Bibianæ, Demetriæ, et Dafrosæ corporibus in ea repertis, et sub ara maxima collocatis.

Rufina making no progress — who, besides her deceitful words, afflicted her daily with blows to move her from her holy purpose — the praetor, frustrated in his hope and burning with anger at having spent his efforts in vain on Bibiana, ordered his lictors to strip her, bind her hands to a column, and beat her with leaded scourges until she breathed her last. Her sacred body lay for two days exposed to dogs in the forum of Taurus, unharmed, however, and preserved by divine providence; it was then buried by night by the priest John near the tomb of her sister and mother at the Licinian palace, where to this day there stands the church dedicated to God under the name of holy Bibiana, which Urban the Eighth restored after the bodies of the holy Bibiana, Demetria, and Dafrosa had been found in it and placed beneath the high altar.

Obsecro, Dómine, mitte quem missúrus es: vide afflictiónem pópuli tui:

I beseech you, O Lord, send him who is to be sent: see the affliction of your people:

Sicut locútus es, veni, * Et líbera nos.

As you have spoken, come, * And deliver us.

Qui regis Israël, inténde, qui dedúcis velut ovem Ioseph, qui sedes super Chérubim.

A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

Luc 21:25-33

In illo témpore: Dixit Iesus discípulis suis: Erunt signa in sole, et luna, et stellis, et in terris pressúra géntium. Et réliqua.

Homilía sancti Gregórii Papæ

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples: ‘There will be signs in the sun and the moon and the stars, and on earth distress among the nations.’ And so forth.

A Homily of Saint Gregory the Pope

Homilia 1 in Evangelia

Homilia 1 in Evangelia

Our Lord and Redeemer, desiring to find us prepared, foretells the evils that will follow upon the aging world, so that he may restrain us from love of it. He makes known how great are the calamities that precede its approaching end: so that, if we are unwilling to fear God in tranquility, we may at least fear his judgment drawing near, worn down as we are by afflictions.

Ecce virgo concípiet, et páriet fílium, dicit Dóminus:

Behold, a virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, says the Lord:

Et vocábitur nomen eius Admirábilis, Deus, Fortis.

And his name shall be called Wonderful, God, the Mighty One.

He will sit upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom for ever.

Et vocábitur nomen eius Admirábilis, Deus, Fortis.

And his name shall be called Wonderful, God, the Mighty One.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

Benedictio. May the divine assistance remain always with us.

For a little earlier in this same reading of the holy Gospel which your fraternity has just now heard, the Lord had prefaced it by saying: Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be great earthquakes in divers places, and pestilences and famines. And after inserting certain things, he added what you have just now heard: There will be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves. Of all these things we certainly see that some have already come to pass, while others we dread as near at hand.

Audíte verbum Dómini, gentes, et annuntiáte illud in fínibus terræ:

Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the ends of the earth:

Et ínsulis, quæ procul sunt, dícite: Salvátor noster advéniet.

And to the islands that are far off, say: Our Savior will come.

Annuntiáte, et audítum fácite: loquímini, et clamáte.

Announce and make it heard: speak, and cry aloud.

And to the islands that are far off, say: Our Savior will come.

Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Grant a blessing, O Lord.

Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Benedictio. May the King of Angels lead us to the company of the citizens on high.

For we see already more clearly in our own times, than we read in books, nation rising against nation, and the pressure of these calamities bearing upon the lands. You know how often we have heard, from other parts of the world, that earthquakes have overwhelmed countless cities. We suffer pestilences without ceasing. As for signs in the sun and moon and stars, we have not yet clearly seen them; but from the very change in the atmosphere we already gather that they are not far off.

Ecce dies véniunt, dicit Dóminus, et suscitábo David germen iustum: et regnábit rex, et sápiens erit, et fáciet iudícium et iustítiam in terra:

Behold, the days are approaching, says the Lord, and I will raise up to David a righteous branch; and a king shall reign and be wise, and shall do judgment and justice in the land:

Et hoc est nomen quod vocábunt eum: * Dóminus iustus noster.

And this is the name they will call him: * The Lord, our Just One.

In diébus illis salvábitur Iuda, et Israël habitábit confidénter.

In those days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell in confidence.

Et hoc est nomen quod vocábunt eum:

And this is the name they will call him:

Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Dóminus iustus noster.

The Lord, our Just One.
