3 Nunc finis super te, et immíttam furórem meum in te: et iudicábo te iuxta vias tuas, et ponam contra te omnes abominatiónes tuas.
4 Et non parcet óculus meus super te, et non miserébor; sed vias tuas ponam super te, et abominatiónes tuæ in médio tui erunt, et sciétis quia ego Dóminus.

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
2 And as for you, son of man: Thus says the Lord God to the land of Israel: The end is coming, the end is coming, over the four regions of the earth.
3 Now the end is over you, and I will send my fury upon you. And I will judge you according to your ways. And I will place all your abominations before you.
4 And my eye will not be lenient over you, and I will not take pity. Instead, I will set your ways upon you, and your abominations will be in your midst. And you shall know that I am the Lord.

It is better for me to fall into the hands of men, than to forsake the law of my God.

12 The time is approaching; the day is very near. Whoever buys should not rejoice. And whoever sells should not mourn. For wrath is over all of their people.
13 For whoever sells will not return to what he has sold, but as yet their life will be among the living. For the vision concerning their entire multitude will not turn back. And man will not be strengthened in the iniquity of his life.

Charles, born in Milan of the noble Borromeo family, the greatness of holiness that was to come was foretold by a divine light gleaming by night over the chamber of his mother in labor. Enrolled in the clerical ranks from boyhood, and afterward distinguished with an abbacy, he admonished his father not to convert the revenues to domestic use; and having himself obtained their administration, whatever remained he spent upon the poor. As a young man he devoted himself to the liberal disciplines at Pavia. He so cultivated chastity that immodest women, sent several times to undermine his purity, he put to flight with unconquered constancy. In his twenty-third year, enrolled by his uncle Pope Pius the Fourth in the sacred college of cardinals, he shone forth with distinguished splendor of piety and all virtues. Soon after, created Archbishop of Milan by the same Pope, he applied the greatest effort to ordering the church entrusted to him in accordance with the most holy Council of Trent, which had already been brought to completion chiefly by his diligence; and, that he might reform the depraved morals of his flock, besides the repeated celebration of synods, he presented himself as a model of outstanding holiness. He labored greatly in routing out the heretics from the regions of Rhaetia and Helvetia, very many of whom he converted to the Christian faith.

The charity of this man shone forth in particular when, having sold the principality of Oria, he distributed the entire sum — some forty thousand gold pieces — to the poor in a single day. With no less devotion he distributed twenty thousand which had been left to him as a bequest. He resigned the ecclesiastical revenues with which his uncle had abundantly endowed him, retaining some for his own needs and the necessities of the poor. When a plague was ravaging Milan, he gave away his household furnishings to feed the sick — save a single bed — and thereafter lay on a bare plank; he diligently visited those afflicted by the disease, refreshed them with fatherly affection, and wonderfully consoled them by administering the sacraments of the Church with his own hands. Meanwhile, approaching as a reconciler with the most humble prayers, having declared a public supplication, with a rope bound about his neck, his bare feet even wounded and bleeding on the rough ground, carrying a cross, offering himself as a victim for the sins of the people, he strove to avert divine wrath. He was the fiercest champion of ecclesiastical liberty. Solicitous for the restoration of discipline, while he was intent on prayer, a fuse on a war machine was lit by agitators and he was struck by a shot, yet was preserved unharmed by divine power.

He was of admirable abstinence; he fasted very frequently, content only with bread and water, sometimes with lupins alone. Matt 9:18-26

At that time: While Jesus was speaking to the crowds, behold, a certain ruler came up and worshipped him, saying: Lord, my daughter has just died. And so forth.

Octávum signum est, in quo princeps suscitári póstulat fíliam suam, nolens de mystério veræ circumcisiónis exclúdi: sed subíntrat múlier sánguine fluens, et octávo sanátur loco; ut príncipis fília de hoc exclúsa número, véniat ad nonum, iuxta illud quod in Psalmis dícitur: Æthiópia prævéniet manus eius Deo; et, Cum intráverit plenitúdo géntium, tunc omnis Israël salvus fiet.

This is the eighth sign, in which the ruler begs that his daughter be raised, not wishing to be excluded from the mystery of true circumcision; but the woman with a flow of blood intervenes and is healed at the eighth place, so that the ruler's daughter, excluded from this number, may come to the ninth, according to what is said in the Psalms: Ethiopia shall go before his hands to God; and, When the fullness of the Gentiles shall have entered in, then all Israel shall be saved.

Et ecce múlier, quæ sánguinis fluxum patiebátur duódecim annis, accéssit retro, et tétigit fímbriam vestiménti eius. In Evangélio secúndum Lucam scríbitur, quod príncipis fília duódecim annos habéret ætátis. Nota ergo, quod eo témpore hæc múlier, id est, Géntium pópulus cœ́perit ægrotáre, quo genus Iudæórum credíderat. Nisi enim ex comparatióne virtútum, vítium non osténditur.

And behold a woman who had suffered a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of his garment. In the Gospel according to Luke it is written that the daughter of the ruler was twelve years of age. Note therefore that this woman, that is, the people of the Gentiles, began to be sick at the same time as the race of the Jews had believed. For unless one vice is shown by comparison with virtues, it is not apparent.

But this woman with the flow of blood approached the Lord not in a house, not in a city, for she was excluded from cities by the law; but on the road, while the Lord was walking; so that, while he was going to another, this one might be healed. Hence the Apostles also say: 'To you it was fitting that the Word of God should first be proclaimed; but since you have judged yourselves unworthy of salvation, we turn to the Gentiles.'
