O God, the lot, crown, and reward
of your soldiers:
as we sing the praises of the Martyr,
free us from the bond of sin.

For he, reckoning the joys of this world
and the enticing food of deception
as bitter gall,
arrived at the things of heaven.

He ran bravely through his punishments
and bore them manfully,
and, shedding his blood for you,
now possesses eternal gifts.

For this, with suppliant prayer
we entreat you, most merciful One;
in this triumph of the Martyr
forgive your servants their offenses.

Callistus, a Roman, ruled the Church under the Emperor Antoninus Heliogabalus. He established the four Ember Seasons of the year, in which the fast received from apostolic tradition should be observed by all. He built the basilica of Saint Mary beyond the Tiber, and enlarged the old cemetery on the Appian Way, in which many holy Priests and Martyrs were buried; hence it is called the cemetery of Callistus from him.

Callistus held the see for five years, one month, and twelve days. In five ordinations, in the month of December, he created sixteen priests, four deacons, and eight bishops. After long fasting and repeated floggings, he was thrown headlong into a well, and thus crowned with martyrdom under the Emperor Alexander; and he was laid in the cemetery of Calepodius on the Aurelian Way, at the third milestone from the City, on the day before the Ides of October. His body was afterward brought to the basilica of Saint Mary across the Tiber, built by himself, where it is venerated with great devotion beneath the high altar.

And when he had said: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus answered him: Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. That is to say: You are blessed for this reason — because my Father has taught you; earthly opinion has not deceived you, but heavenly inspiration has instructed you; and not flesh and blood, but he whose only-begotten Son I am, has made me known to you.

The gates of hell shall not hold fast this confession, the bonds of death shall not bind it; for that voice is the voice of life. Indeed, the power of this authority passed also to the other Apostles, and the establishment of this decree spread to all rulers of the Church; but it is not without reason that it is entrusted to one man, even as it is made known to all. For it is entrusted to Peter individually because the form of Peter is set before all who govern the Church. Peter's privilege therefore endures wherever judgment is rendered according to his equity. Nor is there excess in either severity or leniency, where nothing shall be bound, nothing loosed, except what blessed Peter shall either loose or bind.
