Francis, the fourth Duke of Gandia, born of John Borgia and Joanna of Aragon, niece of Ferdinand the Catholic, after a childhood spent among his household servants in wonderful innocence and piety, was more admirable still for the examples of Christian virtue and austerity of life, first at the court of the Emperor Charles V and then in the governorship of Catalonia. When he had escorted the Empress Isabella to her tomb at Granada and, reading upon her disfigured face the transience of all mortal things, he bound himself by a vow to cast aside all things, as soon as the occasion arose, and to serve the King of kings alone. From that point he made such progress in virtue that, amid the turmoil of affairs, exhibiting the very image of religious perfection, he was called the wonder of princes.

After the death of his wife Eleanor de Castro, he entered the Society of Jesus, that he might be more securely hidden therein and might cut off access to positions of dignity by the bond of a vow — worthy to be pressed by the greatest princes to accept offices of governance, and by scholars to occupy the chairs of professors. But far from coveting such things, he rather fled them with the greatest care, being truly humble of heart, so that he might better advance in virtue. Thus he labored and lived as a member of the Society, serving God most devoutly in the most humble offices.

He thought so humbly of himself that he made the name of sinner his own proper title. The Roman purple, which the Supreme Pontiffs offered him repeatedly, he refused with the invincible steadfastness of his humility. To sweep away filth, to beg his food door to door, to minister to the sick in hospitals — these things he held as delights, being a despiser of the world and of himself. Every day he gave many continuous hours, frequently eight, sometimes ten, to the contemplation of heavenly things. A hundred times each day he adored God on bended knee. He never abstained from the sacrifice of the Mass, and the divine ardor with which he burned made itself known outwardly, as his face, while offering the sacred Host or preaching, sometimes shone with radiance. By a heavenly instinct he could sense where the most holy Body of Christ lay hidden in the Eucharist. Appointed companion to Cardinal Alessandrino, papal legate for uniting the Christian princes against the Turks, he undertook the arduous journey out of obedience, though his strength was now nearly broken; and in that obedience he brought his course of life to a happy end at Rome, as he had desired, in the sixty-second year of his age and in the year of salvation fifteen hundred and seventy-two. Called a holy man by Saint Teresa, who made use of his counsel, and a faithful minister by Gregory XIII, he was at last enrolled by Clement X in the number of the Saints, illustrious for many great miracles.

Great confidence! Peter was a fisherman; he had not been wealthy; he earned his food by hand and by craft. And yet he speaks with confidence: We have left behind all things. And because it is not enough merely to leave things behind, he adds what is perfect: And we have followed you. We have done what you commanded; what reward, then, will you give us? But Jesus said to them: Amen I say to you, that you who have followed me, at the resurrection, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, shall also sit on twelve seats, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. He did not say: Who have left behind all things — for the philosopher Crates also did this, and many others despised riches; but: Who have followed me — which belongs properly to the Apostles and to believers.

℟ This is he who before God worked great deeds of power, and with his whole heart praised the Lord:

May he intercede for the sins of all peoples.

At the regeneration, when the Son of Man shall sit upon the throne of his majesty — when even the dead shall rise incorruptible from corruption — you also shall sit upon twelve thrones judging, and you shall condemn the twelve tribes of Israel: because while you believed, they refused to believe. And everyone who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields for my name's sake shall receive a hundredfold and shall possess eternal life. This passage accords with that saying in which the Saviour speaks: "I have not come to send peace, but a sword. For I have come to separate a man from his father, and a daughter from her mother, and a daughter-in-law from her mother-in-law: and a man's enemies shall be those of his own household." Those, therefore, who for the faith of Christ and the preaching of the Gospel have despised all affections, and riches, and the pleasures of the world, shall receive a hundredfold and shall possess eternal life.

Reading 9

On the occasion of this passage, certain people introduce the thousand years after the Resurrection, saying that then the hundredfold of all the things we have left behind, along with eternal life, is to be rendered to us: not understanding that, if the reward were fitting in the other cases, in the matter of wives it would appear unseemly — that he who has left one wife for the Lord's sake should receive a hundred in the future. The meaning, therefore, is this: he who has left carnal things for the Saviour's sake shall receive spiritual ones: which, by comparison and by their own worth, will be as if a hundredfold number were compared with a small number.
